Good luck with it keep posturing and keep chatting but perhaps Google Romney (I know most will have heard of him) and the other chap and understand the philosophy tbe west have deployed against Russia why Putin became and why we are where we are

I find some of this incredibly bizarre.

With Russia the old ideas of Soviet Communism are hard to shift (how long was the opinion of the German's affected post WWII), especially in the U.S. but our politicians haven't been averse to playing to that stereotype. And given Putin clearly has a fond remembrance of the Soviet era and a bit of a boner for bringing it back with him taking the role of Stalin is it any wonder that that's the way people have started to think about it again over the past decade or so?

Who kept on going on about if Corbyn got elected then we'd be under Russian/Putin control because he's a Commie? All the while taking Russian money and furthering Russian interests in our legal framework? So if you think it's an error it's predominantly from your friends in the Tory party.

How have they not been welcomed given the number of oligarchs that have large investments and properties here? Who's financial markets launder a lot of the dirty Russian money? Russia has hosted numerous tournaments like the World Cup, the Olympics, has an F1 race...

Ex-Eastern bloc countries wanted to join NATO due to a fear of future Russian aggression. Were they supposed to be denied the right of a sovereign state to make that decision because some nutcase in Russia still thinks the USSR is a thing?

As for Islington Labour types wanting a jolly war while working class people die, you're the one who suggested Putin should be 'left to get on with it' and thus leave millions of ordinary working-class Ukrainians to suffer and die at the hands of his army. So don't even think about playing that particular card.

The Russians are solving Ukraines far right problem (old scores genocide of Russian speaking Ukraine 2014), and yes, you are correct about their clear anti-semetism which no doubt exists in Ukraine as well….Azos Russia part-solving that problem as mentioned earlier.

Hmm, Russia stood back and saw 14k people wiped out in W Ukraine…circa 2014-2020). According to them they needed humanitarian intervention there but the West wouldn’t move themselves to accept this. That is their view.

Tallinn was my planned Easter break (including a ferry over to Helsinki for the day) this year

I must admit, I knew where Estonia was , but it hadn't registered that it bordered Ukraine.

Been to Vilnius and Riga in the past, and wanted to complete the Baltic trilogy ( Baltic Way - Wikipedia )

Doubt that will happen this year.

Estonia doesn't border Ukraine.

I have been to Talinn btw, and also Riga and Helsinki, all of which were good.

Again, some salt may be required but there are plenty of reports of fighting and shelling in the area. This is possibly the biggest Nuclear power plant in Europe.



Here's a live stream. There are tanks in the car park although they are starting to move off screen and there were flashes which looked like shots being fired. Absolutely insane, it's a bloody Nuclear power plant!

The good news seems to be that it's an administration block that's been lit up, one of the reactors may have been hit by gun fire but there doesn't seem to be any threat of a nuclear catastrophe right now. Also, the firefighters are no longer being shot at by the Russians so they may be able to go in and put the fire out before it does become a problem. That's nice of them.

Ukraine gets a lot of it's power from Nuclear, so I would guess this is a staggeringly stupid way of starving them of power generation.

Fucking clown world.

When Putin starts shelling nuclear facilities the stakes increase massively.

It's interesting to read that Canada has been quoted along the lines of 'nothing should be off the table', particularly in terms of no fly zones.

I'm still not sure that we should intervene militarily, but I think the point may have come where we stop saying that we definitely won't. One of the big mistakes by NATO may have been the absolute insistence that we wouldn't get involved if Ukraine was invaded, that was like leaving an open door.

I can't see how it could hurt now to put a bit of ambiguity in our approach.

What if we played Putin's game, started to build large forces in and around Ukraine, whilst publicly saying that there was no intention to attack. I doubt he'd take us at our word, so he'd need to stretch his forces further. That might bring some respite for Ukraine.

A risky strategy, I know, but so is firing at nuclear power plants in the centre of Europe.

At the moment I wouldn't be surprised if Putin eventually invades a NATO country as well under the belief that he could somehow get away with it. Even with other non-NATO countries in the region, what is there to stop him from doing what he's doing in Ukraine and making the same threats around nuclear war.

I don't think he would invade a NATO country.

The man is so scared of dying that he sits at the end of a 20m table because he's so paranoid about catching COVID. I don't think he'd be willing to take the risk of getting nuked.

That said, he is clearly a madman and not thinking rationally.

I am still hopeful those around him will think he's losing the plot and is on course for nuclear destruction, so will somehow topple him.
