The U/23s is essentially the reserves, you have a first team squad of 20 odd, 18 in use on match days then a group of hopefuls, they don’t all come off but we have a few who might. But we have to have the players to field a reserve team.

I would say Robins’ striker recruitment isn’t that bad Godden & Gyokeres have been a success Walker so far not, Waghorn 50/50, Bakayoko poor, as said signing strikers is the hardest position to fill, I remember Kevin Drinkell, scored for fun at Norwich @ Rangers scored four in his first few games here then zilch.”

Robins' record overall is very good, Leon Clarke in his first spell and McNulty, Godden, Gyokeres in his second have all been decent.

Chelsea's best youth prospects have all had a loan in the Championship and I suspect they will be looking to do the same for the up-and-coming crop. Soonsup Bell is a good shout, as are Lewis Hall (still only a first year scholar) and Harvey Vale.

It’s not necessarily the quality of strikers is the balance of the type of strikers that had me scratching my head.

We had at the start of the season a few no 10 types (players that wouldn’t look out of place up front in a 10 role)

Godden
(Waghorn - see below)
Bright (read last sentence above and no one knew he was going to go AWOL)

Then, in emergency

Tavares
Jones
Rus

Etc.

I’m not counting Allen & Maatsen.

And only one who could play no.9

Gyok

No one in the u23’s.

This severely limits how we can play, particularly in Gyok is injured or just burnt out as he is.

So we sign Waghorn, who is never a no 9. I pointed this out and got the dribblers telling me I’m clueless.

Why we in the winter window go and sign Bidwell where JCS or Shipley (at a push) or Maatsen can play there, and we don’t get a no9 in baffles me totally.

I don’t blame SISU, as Boddy says they give the team a free reign to sign whoever within the budget (his words).

I blame COVID. BBC reporting today that it shrinks the brain for a while; our transfer team must have been riddled with COVID.

I'd say that Walker is absolutely a No,9, as is Godden. Waghorn is clearly a No.10. Viktor somewhere inbetween. Godden has said he likes playing up front alone most of all.

Means we end up in a situation where Waghorn is miles ahead of Walker regardless of ability because he's better suited to playing with Godden/Viktor. Makes Walker look an odd signing when I don't think he'd ever fit with Godden.

To me a number 9 is Cyrille Regis - ie a strong striker with a bit of height who can hold the ball up and be a target man.

We only have Vic who has the physicality to hold the ball up and is over 5 feet somewhere

I think Quinn was just past it by then and missing Rosario. In any case, he was mostly a prolific division 2 striker who got about 10 goals in his top flight season as Pompey went down, rather than a big name. He was out of favour at big spending Newcastle and we got lucky with a player that fitted like a glove with our style and players-Gallacher (created lots, fantastic team player), Nuddy and Williams doing the pacey running, Rosario as target man. Quinn didn't need pace or height with them around him, he just waited in the middle to stick it in the net, which was the entirety of his game. Maybe not lucky-well done Bobby with that one!

I bet Walker would have loved to play in that side in the Quinn role but the game has changed a lot, you can't just be a goalhanger now.

Not to sure what went wrong with Bannister 2nd time around as he'd scored so many goals at QPR and Wednesday and was only 28 when he signed. He did get the winner against Man Utd for us during that 2nd spell though!

regis was woeful in his first two seasons he was played like Gyokeres is now and hadn’t the stamina

Yeah probably right. Letting Nee go is based on him hardly getting a game for the 23s.

I agree on Allen to an extent as he shouldn't be in a top half championship side but he's quite a useful player to have in the squad.

Nee and Burroughs have two year contracts. He’s been unlucky this season as we play 1 up front for 23s and Fabio has scored so many - he will play more next season

Clarke Salter is out of contract and has no future there either way. Maatsen has a long term contract

I'll be interested to see if this blockage on new contracts will also apply to loans? If it does, it'll further undermine the Chelsea business model, as they earn significant sums from players being loaned.

The implications for Chelsea FC and their players are dodgy imo to say the least and I’m certain as we speak the various players agents are working their arses off for their players and I include the star names. Apart from them Chelsea have a stack of players out on loan all over Europe.

I think they can’t loan or sell. With JCS I’m sure they have an option on him - now I know they can’t offer new contracts, but an option is a term in the existing contract, so would they be able to trigger it?

Scary thought.

Hedge fund that specialises in distressed firms buys the club, sells all their players, stacks huge debts against them, they end up struggling for years.

Type of thing never happens though, does it?

I think Chelsea could be in real trouble, as they have over a lot of players out on loan. They receive a fee for them, plus a significant contribution to their wages.
If they can't loan them out then they'll be sat at their training ground and they will be picking up 100% of their wages.
Hence, I think that JCS's contract will not be extended, as that is one cost they can lose.

Even though the UK is outside the EU I believe that the 'Kolpak' ruling is relevant which is basically that the Bosman ruling applies to countries that have an Association Agreement with the EU.

We need 3 defenders as we're incredibly light in that department.
Two decent wide players for more options.

GK and up top im fine with. Defence and wide/attacking midfield is where we need to look (not that I want rid of OHare..I think he's quality). Just need more goals from that part of the world.

I wish we could get someone like Chris Willock from QPR although it would never happen. Probably the best AM I've seen this season in my opinion, absolutely ran the show against us at the CBS and not a regular starter for them.

He’s started 32 out of 34 games he’s been in the squad. 7 goals and 11 assists is impressive, the type of numbers O’Hare needs to be getting to move to the next level.
