Meh

Sheaf played well until the end mistake. Wilson saved a pen.

Hyam 6
Kane 5 - too deep, pretty one dimensional when he does get it
Maatsen 6 - offered a decent outlet second half but his final ball is poor too often
Sheaf 8 - motm
Hamer 5 - anonymous and then goes off "injured"
Allen 5 - runs around a lot but completely ineffective against any half decent opposition, doesn't ever seem to touch the ball in the opposition box which is not good for an attacking midfielder
O'Hare 5 - got involved but looked well off it
Gyokeres 6 - tried hard but again just looked off it

Subs
Waghorn 6 - thought he did ok, offered something
Kelly 6 - it is what it is

Robins 5 - really disappointing to go away and play so cautiously when the last hope of the season is riding on it

Sheaf was up there for MOTM today but mainly for his defensive work in my opinion didn't feel he did much going forward apart from his quick feet n to the box which was class.

Wilson 7 (looked indecisive on crosses but very good penalty save. Also liked the way he kept the ball on the ground rather than chipping it to wingbacks)
Kane 7 (battled well. Crossing a bit hit or miss)
Rose 8 (deducted a point for giving away pen but was excellent otherwise)
McFadzean 8 (caught out once but luckily offside but good comeback to starting line up)
Hyam 9 motm (superb defensive performance)
Maatsen 7 (some good moments going forward but caught out a couple of times at the back)
Sheaf 9 (made some important tackles and passed the ball well. Great feet opening a chance for himself but shot didn't match)
Hamer 7 (played within himself but passed well)
Allen 7 (didn't do enough with first half chance but improved second half, always giving options on the break)
O'Hare 6 (some decent interchanges first half but not in the game in the second apart from some heavy first touches)
Gyokeres 8 (brilliant hold up play and worked tirelessly. Poor finish when he had an opening first half)

Waghorn 7 (looked sharper. Very unlucky with free-kick)
Kelly 6 (one wasteful pass and cheap free-kick in centre circle but generally tidy on the ball)

Wow you are feeling positive today 🤣 I wouldn't score anyone over a 7 and thought Gyok had his worst game in a while.

Wilson 8

Clean sheet and saved a pen. Get an 8. Distribution ok. Can’t believe he was taking his time in the 92nd minute when last minute goal Cov needed one more attack. He seems to be a bit of a dafty - which is ok when needing to throw your head into the boots of attackers I suppose but I guess he thinks tactics are a type of small mint.

Rose 6

Did ok. But I think it was him that gave away the pen so - 6. Might be wrong.

Mcfadzean 7

Handled Carrol well and marshalled the defence which looked by a large solid. Too quick to kick and head away for corners. Could have proved costly against their giants.

Hyam 7

As Fadz but looked quite cultured.

Kane 5

To me, more than half of his deliveries from wide were poor. Why try floating crosses when most of our front line are under 5 foot 5 and a fag-end? Whip it across.

Maatsen 7

Much more effective than Kane. Full of running and intent - final ball sometimes lacking.

Sheaf 8

No dithering and put his shoulder in. If he’d have gone down when he was clean through then nailed on pen. Best outfield player and edges MOTM for me. Better of late.

Hamer 6

Lost that little bit of bite, I guess due to not wanting to get a yellow. Some nice balls but what was it with those daft short corners and why let Waghorn have that late free kick?

Allen 5

Ran a lot. A few interceptions but no threat attacking wise.

O'Hare 6

Not on it today.

Gyokeres 7

Great hold up play and direct running.

I really don't gate the hate for Wilson, a solid backup GK and did nothing wrong today

MOTM for saving the pen, everyone else average other than Sheaf

Yeah, I thought the change for Moore was strange but he's done well today and hasn't ever really let us down when ever he's come in.
Happy to keep him around as a backup next season

I thought he got caught in no man's land a bit today but can't decide if I'm judging him too hard... GK's never have anywhere to hide.

Wtf, Wilson keeps a clean sheet away from home, makes a couple of very good saves, and saves a late penalty, yet only gets a 7 !!!
What the absolute fuck does he need to do to get a 8 ?????

I thought all of of our star men were poor today.
Hamer looked as if he was playing to avoid a yellow
Ohare looked well off it
Gykores looked knackered - similar to the 10 games after his ankle injury at Blackburn

hope all opposition scouts were here today..

Tbf we couldn't get into a rhythm as they were so deep. Had 0-0 written all over it from early on. If we'd managed to somehow get something early to force them out to play it would've been a much better game and our key players with room to play, but they were so poor we violent get going. Horrible to watch.

Wilson - 10 for the pen save
Kane - 6 not enough going forward
Maatsen - 6 got in good positions but no composure
Rose, McFadzean, Hyam - 7 kept Carroll quiet all night and never looked in trouble
Sheaf - 8 everywhere. Thought he ran the show
Hamer - 6 quieter than normal but always looked to play forward
Allen - 5 busy but not much quality
O’Hare - 6 Why doesn’t he shoot. One moment in the first half sticks out when he should’ve trusted himself to take it on and shoot but he wanted to pass
Gyokores - 5 didn’t link up play. The West Brom CBs did a number on him in both games

Wilson - 8 - didn’t have much to do but pen save got us a point

Rose- 6 defensively sound, but passing was really poor
McFadz - 7 defending well
Hyam - 7 defended well
Mattsen - 7 thought he played well, most our attacking play came down his side
Kane - 6 didn’t do much wrong

Hamer - 6 thought he kept things ticking along
sheaf - 7 he was here there every fucking where .. possibly should have done better with his shot when he danced threw 3 players
O’Hare - 5 thought he was poor today
Allen - 6 lot of industry but didn’t do much, should have scored early on

Gyokeres - 6 - did alright with the ball but had no real support

Waghorn - 6 - did alright when he come on, thought he scored the free kick
Kelly - didn’t really do anything - no score

thought we were the better team, just that final ball was missing as per a large part of the season.

You lot make me laugh.
If I had said at the start of the season we would finish above WBA in the league and had drawn 0-0 at the hawthorns you would have bitten my hand off
We have made massive strides this season and congrats to all involved. DB, MR , AV and all.
Be thankful we are now a mid table championship team and with the right investment during the summer can be pushing for the play offs this time next year.
Get a grip !!

Not sure why any of that is relevant to today's game? West Brom are not a good side and we gave them too much respect. We can't go out thinking we're lucky to be on the same pitch as teams.

I didn't suggest we were lucky to be on the same pitch. I make the point the progress the club has made without busting the bank. West Brom, Forest ( if they don't get promoted) , Derby, Stoke are all on a downward curve due to over investment. We are on an upward trajectory.

Robins 5 - really disappointing to go away and play so cautiously when the last hope of the season is riding on it

What would you have done? I always think we look worse when we sacrifice midfield for strikers. Our best option is always to strangle the middle and break which tbf we had the opportunity to do a few times but were just really sloppy with it. O’Hare, Gyok and Allen fluffed a few 3v2’s etc. Nothing wrong with the game plan for me just poor execution of the breaks.

I think Robins got it spot on - thought he’d learned from the game at the Ricoh where I felt he played too agressively. They might be shit atm but they were still a prem side last season.

playing them on the counter was the right way to go

I would just love to know what people mean when they say “we should’ve gone for it”. Thought we set up with the best chance of winning - not sure what we could’ve done to improve our chances of winning yesterday

Agreed. Again we had a lot of play, but the final ball let us down. Allen should have scored early. But then again Grant should have scored that 1 on 1. I think a draw was about fair.

Sheaf is different gravy. Hopefully his performances have slipped under the radar this season so there won’t be much interest in him over the summer, but we won’t be able to keep him a secret for long. Unbelievable talent.

Robins was clearly worried about Carroll and our wingbacks spent very little time in the opposition half during the first half, which I think was a deliberate tactic to not give WBA time to cross the ball from wide. It's not a great formation for playing possession football if your wingbacks are deeper than Hamer/Sheaf.
The result is the counter attacking style we saw with players bombing through the middle, because there is no wide outlet. I don't think we have the players to do it well. For all their brilliant attributes, Gyokeres and O'Hare are neither clinical or especially composed and you need both to make counter attacking football work consistently.

The tactic worked in terms of neutralising Carroll's threat, we just lacked the quality to finish what we did create - a better box to box midfielder than Allen finishes his big chance in the first half and buries his header in the 2nd.
