Thorn's replacement and the way forward... (3 Viewers)

Thorn has received some support on this board but I feel you must look closer...

Come on guys it's not about the 3 games played, it's more about the manner in which we played them and the gut instinct of many after those games, including the majority on here that perhaps appointing him was a mistake in the first place.

We were relegated because we had an inexperienced manager at the helm last season regardless of whatever Linnell says.

Many on here , myself included were calling for Thorn to go about halfway way in the season or we would most likely get relegated and so it proved ultimately. had he possesed just a flicker more experience or gamesmanship about him combined with tactical know how I think we could have survived the drop.

The only surprise for me is that SISU allowed him to stay on and build a squad for this season.

Could he have gone on to win more and be near the promotion tussle if he stayed? Yes, maybe but I seriuosly doubted that after the first few games we have just witnessed.
The second half against Bury would suggest he was clueless to know how to adjust his team after Bury had done just that.
That was his achilles heel last season too.

Normally it is scandulous to dismiss someone after just 3 games of the season but in this instance not so in my opinion. I'm sorry for the guy, having made a stab at it, gained his coaching badges and all that but always felt it was abridge too far for him. learning 'on the go' was always a gamble that probably would fail.

SISU must make their mark quickly. I said so much before we kicked a ball in earnest. We must hit the ground running, show intent and I suggested during the close season it was a make or break season for SISU as much as CCFC.
Failure now could be catatrophic for the very survival of CCFC and that my friends is the reason they acted so swiftly.

Should we have expected immediate success from the get go? Yes.

The squad assembled is a strong one. A half decent football man will work them well in this league. It's not rocket science, you don't have to be a badge waving coach to see what is wrong do you? Hell we all have been to a man almost in agreement on this very board about the first few games about what is wrong.
We all love footy and know our footy as much as the next man, some a bit more knowledgable than others perhaps but as I said yesterday if we don't beat Bury and establish a marker early on in this league that the general malasie under Thorn's leadership may well be in question and I could not see him lasteing more than half a dozen games.

Well he's gone and it's no good looking inward at this time searching for salvation among Carsly and Shaw. There time will come.

They have rightly suggested the Carsley/Shaw step up is temporary and I think correct. Now I look forward to getting someone who will have some stature around the club.

For all those to start to suggest there's no money....well there will be no club at the end of this season if we don't act properly now. SISU can and will find enough to entice a decent guy for that reason. Just who...is a difficult one.

At the level we are at some would say McCarthy would get us out but many would hate that appointment. A flop in the Prem but in this company?
Then there's Billy Davies, though he built a reputatation on having money to spend but a motivator and inspirational character.
Wise? Hmm....without Puyat?
Souness, out the game for a while but could be brilliant appointment or a disaster.
Roy Keane? Another character who may inspire in this league with his high demands, certainly would set a buzz around the place.

And a buzz is what the appointment must acheive to get some impetus from the start.

There are others of course. What I don't want are 'trialst' from lower league success's or a failed 'name' as in Southgate. You know Gordan Strachan would do better than him!

The next guy must be someone who you feel instinctively will give us a great chance of doing the business. We will all know when the names are bounded around. Warnock for me, love or hate him has that ability to set peoples instincts going on a positive note but he will take Leeds up this year. Maybe the guy he replaced is a good shout?

Whatever we all think I truly beleive it's a one time deal here. We are at the cross roads. The right direction and decision must be made, no room for error, no fudgy appointments like Southgate please.

Funny thing is I sense relief that the season will see someone given the opportunity to put us back on a wave of optimism. It's all there, a strong squad, a great stadium, big city support if we start winning and glory to be had. Enticing someone may not just be about the money. There will be no shortage of applications for sure.

I said it would be a good thing to be relegated last year and have that chance to build back the damage done in a way Southampton and Norwich and others have done before us. That time has come...

Good post, Paxman.

The more I think about it the more I believe it to be the right decision. Only 3 games in but it seemed clear that nothing had been learned from last season and we were still throwing leads away. I predicted a 14th place finish. That was with AT in charge and that was because he still remained a novice and I just wasn't convinced he had what it takes to lead us forward.

I agree Otis. Sorry it was so long winded but it's an overall view of the facts and situation.

I dared not think about your 14th place prediction being right but under Thorn and 3 games in think you may have been right.

This next appointment is a life saving one for CCFC.

Looks pretty strong to me if they can stay fit.

Surely Jennings, Barton, Fleck, Wood and McDonald are as good as players as any other club has got?

I have seen two games so far this season & I would say our defence is very suspect ,the goalie no more than average & the midfield & strikers overrated,we are at best midtable 3rd div.:thinking about:

Nah, can't agree.

Many players too good for this level.

Sorry disagree with that, most have proved not good enough for championship which is why they were relegated, others are unproven. We have some decent players for league one but many of them aren't too good for this level.

Not why they were relegated surely? We were relegated because of the man who just got fired!

Think we have a strong squad minus the two goalies one that does not command his area just like dracula doesnt like crosses, thorn in the end was his own downfall he kept on playing the diamond formation which did not work i for one would not want billy davies as manager

We have no budget. We have a group of players that , properly managed and given the breaks, should be competitive for the play-offs. The requirement must be somebody with play-off experience who won't insist on a budget. And they need to give them three years. If they appoint Carsley and/or Shaw it won't be long before they are looking for a seventh manager in eight years.

we will only benefit from this change if we can get the players behind the club instill some pride and passion lets go for it

Whilst as a city fan I always hope the new signings are going to do the business I have to say that the team consists of players who got us relegated amd new players who are prepared to sign up for us in this league. I will no doubt have my high hopes dashed again as the team are probably where they belong.
I drive to work everyday with another lifelong City fan who is always saying we are bigger than Brum etc, I constantly say a big club does not reside in the the third tier with attendances of around 12000. To be big we somehow need to rebuild, now would be the time but the fans need to stay with the club, support the players because they don't want to have a bad game but that is what happens at this level, Even premier players have off days. It is the endevour that counts

The system isn't to blame, it is ridiculous to suggest if we play for example, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, our fortunes would've been different.

1st half against Bury we dominated midfield, width weren't a problem, we were playing excellent football, it was going so smoothly, then...
