Consistency:

2020/21 was a mixed first season in the championship for Fankaty Dabo. Going into 2021/22 he was first choice right back ahead of Julian DaCosta. However, starting at rcb against Nottingham Forest was not the start he would have wanted or needed.

Over the course of the season Dabo has played RWB, LWB and RCB and alternated seemingly every game between November and December before injury struck. Transfermarkt has Dabo featuring RWB on 19 occasions with 8 appearances out of position which I’m sure does not include positional switches during the game such as Bristol City (h). He has also missed games through suspension, injury and has only featured in 56% of our league minutes this season. This has no doubt affected his consistency and I have no doubt he would have produced better performances had he been able to play reguarly in his preferred position.

After making his first appearance in September, Kane has also had his injury troubles and recently has found himself on the bench behind Josh Eccles. However, according to transfermrkt, he has only featured out of position once.

Attacking stats:

Dabo’s stats are poor with only 2 assists and 0 goals across the season and has come into criticism for his crossing.

In my opinion Dabo links better with Hamer, O’hare and the forwards than Todd Kane does however, this is not indicated heavily in the stats I have seen. Although Dabo has attempted 728 short passes in comparison to Kane’s 656, his passing accuracy is only 1% better than Todd Kane’s. Purely from the eye test, I would still suggest Dabo has the edge here.

Kane has contributed 5 assists and a slightly fortuitous goal. It is clear that throughout the game, Kane finds himself in far better positions to cross the ball, although his crossing can be erratic at times. I would argue he is far more likely to create a goal from a cross than Dabo is.

According to Squawka, Kane has attempted 255 crosses of which 65 were successful with Dabo only attempting 108 of which 22 were successful. I must caveat this includes corners which of course Kane takes occasionally.

Defensive stats:

I think the above shows what we all suspected. Dabo is stronger in the tackle and has a greater duel success. Kane on the other hand is more prone to standing off and attempting to block crosses. He is also more likely to play safe rather than play out of defence.

Discipline is a factor here. Even in league one Dabo was prone to diving in to a tackle. He gave away a clumsy penalty this year in the first game of the season and was also sent off for a rash tackle against Cardiff. He is a far more aggressive defender than Kane has shown us so far.

So in light of these stats and their performances throughout the season, who would you want as our first choice RWB next season:

A) Fankaty Dabo
B) Todd Kane
C) Josh Eccles
D) A new signing (suggestions welcome)

I prefer Dabo over Kane overall, but his recent injury record hasn't been great so we'll definitely need backup in that position next year

When Kane came in I did think he looked an improvement on Dabo and his delivery in particular was very impressive. Seems to have regressed since then so I’d side with Dabo now. He has the dynamism that Kane lacks.
Kane’s form has dropped off, all players go in and out of form, BD has spoken saying he may not be around the first team next season probably suggests maybe J.Burroughs may come into the fold

Dabo has great footwork and skill that can get him out of tight situations, which Kane doesn't have. I think he is decent but needs a run without injuries. Even when he comes back it feels he isn't 100%. Although crossing hasn't been great, it did improve, such as the one he curled in for Gyokeres' header. He also gets to the byline better whereas Kane tends to deliver the same type of cross from deeper. So Dabo for me. However, if Josh Eccles isn't playing in midfield I think he has shown to be very capable at RWB. He seems better than Dabo at blocking crosses. He is also super composed where Dabo can be rash. If both can get and stay fit, I would be happy with those two vying for that position.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but from what I've seen from both this season I don't think either are really good enough.

If we are going to persist with this wingback system then we need to have strong players in those positions. An area to improve for me.

Definitely need a strong powerful RWB to come in, keep Dabo and Eccles as competition, I would move Kane on.

I don't think Burroughs is ready to step up is he? Doesn't seem to have played that much in Scotland.

Wouldn’t have thought so. I’d imagine maybe a 6 month loan move and reevaluate in January. He needs regular game time and now that he’s matured with a stint away it may mean he progresses.

Or, his next step is first reserve (if we make the, maybe naive, assumption that the first choice RWB stays relatively injury free!)

I also don’t think the types of striker we have particularly play to Kane’s strengths. If he wants to cross from deep he ideally needs someone making a near-post run in behind the defence. Walker, for all his faults, made that move quite consistently. None of the others do.

Unfortunately as we have witnessed so many times during the season, loans don't necessarily lead to much game time. Due to Burroughs ability to play a variety of positions, I think he would have been a useful option on the bench.

Feel for him in some ways (unless BD tells me not to as he’s been a tosser behind the scenes) but for footballing reasons I’m pleased.

He’s terrible. Started average, looked good (albeit in more of a traditional RB way) then regressed massively and looked like he couldn’t even remember his whole thing was crossing as his lost that ability too.

I’m a fan of Dabo, but he does need a consistent season next year after what feels like two in and out years (although stats show he’s played more than I remember!). We know his crossing isn’t always the best, but his ability to be dynamic, an outlet and take us up the pitch is massive to how we play.

If I'm being honest, I think Eccles has looked far better than both Dabo and Kane in the few appearances he made there at the end of the season.

They both have different attributes but i dont think either are good enough if we want to push on next season and be a top 6 pushing team.

I would move them both on if i could, and replace them.

Dabo is better for me.

Plus it was clear from Kane's history that he's a bit of a tosser and when this was pointed out at the time of his signing the rebuttal was 'yeah but he's played x championship games'. And? Doesn't matter how many championship games he's played if he's a bad apple, he's a bad apple.

Also refers to himself in the third person as 'The TK' which is surely worthy of bomb squad status in its own right.
