Journalists don’t tend to get their information from ringing up the manager and asking, unless you think that Pep was on the phone 24/7 a couple of weeks ago letting journalists know they’d signed Erling Haaland. As irrelevant as Turner has been for a while now he’s still been doing the job for a long time and I’d imagine he’d at least have some contacts within the club, especially as we have two posters on here who seem to have a direct line to whatever information they want. Wouldn’t imagine it’s particularly hard for a local journalist to find out what club Robins went to watch when he was over in the Netherlands etc. even without having Robins number on speed dial.

Andy Turner isn't overly popular at the club. If he started to nose around he'd likely not get anywhere and he doesn't have the network within the industry to receive info/go hunting for potential targets either.
You'll probably notice that the ITK posters don't often give out names and if they do, the player/s in question has likely already been signed. It just hasn't been officially announced yet.

to be honest, I don’t really care about defending Andy Turner, mainly because I agree that he’s pretty shit at his job, but I disagree that he’d have a particularly hard time finding out stuff like that. But anyway, the point is there has been nothing actually linking us to this lad, which of course doesn’t mean he’s definitely not signing or anything, but it’s just a bit odd that he’s getting brought up so much when it’s purely based off fan speculation.

It's not a case that journalists ring up agencies or football clubs they don't know in order to prize information out of them. That's a pretty massive misconception from fans.
Even national writers such as Alan Nixon have a difficult time and they have a network of contacts, which they've spent decades building, who they can call upon for speculative or unannounced transfer news. And even then they'll only be told what such parties want them to know.
So what chance does Andy Turner have when anyone close to the club would've been told to under no circumstances talk to the press regarding such matters and he quite clearly has zero contacts within the wider industry?

I think you’re really over-estimating this supposed hatred for Andy Turner at the club. He’s been covering games for 15+ years now, it’s pretty naive to suggest that he has zero connections to anyone who works for/has worked for the club in that time. We’re a Championship football club, not Fort Knox, if a couple of posters on a forum are able to get some insider information it’s hardly a ridiculous suggestion that a local journalist might also know a couple of people who know a few things. Mark Robins isn’t the only person in the world who knows the names of some players we might be looking at. I worked in the football industry for a few years, with pretty close ties to a lower league club and I’d always hear information about who they were looking at, it’s really not that secretive.

I'm not saying he's hated. You've just purposely misinterpreted what I said. He's not liked by a fair few due to his position on things in the past along with a couple of stories that he put out.
The information given to the ITKs within the forum quite obviously comes from players. The club would outright prohibit any employee to discuss matters regarding recruitment with the press unless they were told otherwise. That isn't even up for debate.
I work in the industry still, and of course I hear things. But telling me, a trusted supplier, and directly telling a journalist are two very different things.

The club have a decent track record in keeping transfers under wraps over the past few years.
The only ones to memory that have been released beforehand are from external sources outside of the local media - foreign media/national media. Which is out of their control.
Surely points to no one leaking info to the local press no?

He simply scours the internet in search of rumours.

In the close season as a sport journalist I'm sure it's not easy to fill a local paper with Coventry City stories when realistically nothing is happening and everyone is on holiday. I'm pretty sure there are no 'concrete rumours' as Andy won't report any names until they are pretty much done. Given Andy has worked with Robins for about five years (over Robins two spells) I would say he has a pretty decent relationship with him.
