Vote Tory and get Labour. Tax tax tax.
The government played this poorly. A Windfall tax rightly polled well and political pressure suggested it was coming. They should’ve just said, we are reviewing all options including this but any taxes need to be properly considered/structured. Labour on the other hand played a blinder as I think it was Davy who initially proposed/ mentioned it
At least on the face of it, it appears the cash is being directed/focussed on the right people.

Yeah, I agree, however, he’s now faced with a potential drip drip of letters. So he could try to get on the front foot and at least try to claw back some credibility.
Of course they shouldn’t have as they knew it was coming but that’s the mature level of politics…they didn’t want to be seen to be voting for a Labour proposal. I was saying how they should’ve at least tried to position their stance/vote

Of course the simpler way would have been to just keep prices lower for fuel, rather than let them rocket and then tax the profits - that's not efficient!

But there'salways a new PM bounce. If Brown had had the strength of his convictions, he'd have probably won a snap election - Johnson did. I'm thinking a Jeremy Hunt type figure - boring, but competent, could be presented as a new broom and everybody would rush to vote him in.

Yeah, I’ve always thought the best option for the government would be to pressure the main energy companies like BP and Shell to stop making super profits. Tricky to do this across the board but say BP are currently making 20p per litre on diesel when it’s usually 10p, pressure them to get it back down to nearer 10p. That then puts pressure on other petrol companies to follow suit, all of which helps suppress inflation across the board
There must be something I’m missing here. Maybe they like higher petrol/diesel prices as people reduce unnecessary journeys ? Maybe the Tories enjoy being the tax and spend party
As I said earlier, at least it appears that the help is going to the right people

I might be wrong but I don’t think the heating/home energy providers are making massive profits. Loads went bust due to the caps.

Ask Ofgem ! It’s cheap in UK because we have imported loads of LNG but can’t store a lot of it longer term and people aren’t using it at the moment as winters over.

Ofgem sets the cap not the companies and there’s probably only a tiny margin in supplying the public at the moment, if anything. Most smaller providers struggled/went bust. The article headline suggests all energy companies are creaming it from the public which is wrong, basically SSE and British Gas made money (I’m guessing from other areas and not from supplying public), EON and EDF lost £350m between them - Edit - think it’s a different article attached now
The reason I mentioned BP and Shell earlier is that’s where windfall tax is predominantly focussed, companies making massive profits from oil and gas production, then some also then taking the piss at the pumps
Ps agree it is a weird system where we have some ‘providers’ that don’t produce the energy

I wasn’t trying to be funny, my point was that it’s not like providers are setting the prices at the moment. They’re not profiteering from the public at the moment as they’re not allowed to due to cap…probably taking the piss with businesses though !

Sorry I might’ve misunderstood, not totally with it today, I was responding more to the article attached before (open democracy one) and the comment below.
Only additional comment is that there are other providers who aren’t the big six who would go bust if the cap didn’t rise. I think the article also mentions that SSE who are by far the most profitable (from other areas) don’t even provide to the public as they sold their retail arm to OVO a year or two back.
