See this proposal is being floated to raise the minimum age for buying tobacco by a year every year until no one can buy it.

What do we think? Not generally a fan of prohibition as it doesn’t tend to work, but equally as a smoker smoking is fucking stupid.

Will vapes kill smoking anyway? Will smoking tobacco become the new weed with people growing it in their attic? Should we do something else, I was in Paris recently and you can only buy tobacco from a specific store there, rather than any newsagent or supermarket like here. Thought that was a good compromise.

Making rollies more expensive and ending the sale of tobacco at duty free are also proposed.

I'm not sure really.

Not into prohibition was it generally fails but people chase booze and drugs because they get something out of it. The only benefit of cigarette smoking is satisfying your addiction so it could be a different matter.

Am on the fence, because what you say is right, but isn't that also an argument to formalise it to get rid of the last stragglers, and given it'll be younger people it affects more, they won't really notice anyway?

As an aside, seems like only yesterday a smoking ban in pubs came into force!

I think nicotine addiction will carry on through vapes, which seem to have make it cool in schools again.

I’d like to see all Nicotine products kept away from the general gaze i think, just allow them in specialised vape shops (there’s enough of them).

Funnily enough I stopped very easily having done 40 a day - I can have one now if I wanted abs it wouldn’t bother me if I didn’t for another 10 years

When you consider that there is also a legitimate argument for decriminalisation of drugs, this seems a bit counter productive.
I’m all for raising the age to around 21 though in the first instance.

I too went from 40 a day to none, overnight (39 years and two months ago, but I'm not counting).
I wouldn't say it was easy, but I didn't use any substitutes apart from chips, and biscuits, and crisps, and chocolate, but I'd encourage people to persevere if they want to give up. It's worth it.

Was luck when I gave up. Just completely lost the desire for them. Straights made my throat dry and sore and follies made me feel a bit sick.

I just gave my remaining half pack to a friend and haven’t had one in 10 years.

Personally I've found I probably vape more now, I think it's because it's so accessible, i.e doing in house, whereas with a cigarette I'd have to go in garden etc. I much prefer e-cigs though, I used to feel embarrassed in company smelling of cigarettes and I don't feel out of breath etc. Who knows what they find out about e-cigs in the future regarding health risks etc but I generally feel much healthier as a result Vs smoking. Haven't touched a cigarette in 3 years now.

Never smoked, never vaped but not a fan of the proposal

All for encouraging younger people not to start but you'll never get smoke free

People can make their own choices and as long as I'm not affected by passive smoking (obviously you're going to be breathing in when walking to a pub) then I'm good

This is about the same for me. Don’t crave cigarettes at all now and the smell on others is vile. But I do vape a lot, working at desk and driving, it’s pretty constant. I don’t feel in the least bit unhealthy though, nothing on my chest and no cough and I can run like the old days.

I do worry about the long term effects but based on modern science they are obviously not too worried as it is championed by the nhs now.

Getting off the vape is equally tough though. Tried a few times and failed, miserably. I’ve successfully quit a couple of habits in the past so I know it can be done when the mindset is right.

I was 11 years old when I started smoking, back in 1964. It was peer pressure I suppose. My older brother used to hang about in school with his mates of the same age and I just sort of joined the group. They all smoked and I thought I should too. I wagged school one Monday morning and had 5 shillings dinner money on me (2 x half crowns). There was a newsagents near the park where I was wagging it and outside there was a ciggie machine. I put in one of the half crowns and received 10 Embassy with a penny sellotaped to the pack. I took the penny onto the shop and asked for a penny book of matches "for me dad". That was it! Those ten fags lasted me about two weeks coz I thought they were horrible, but I never gave up. Only when I'd had my 4th heart attack, did I give up, which was about 5 years ago. I've not touched one since. Oh, and I finished on small cigars before I gave up. A 10 tin of Café Crème a day. Bloody loved 'em, but no more!!

Not a fan of banning stuff as it seems to have the opposite effect - people are more interested in it because it's illicit. I've always felt if you want kids to be eat more healthily just ban them from eating fruit and veg!

Then there's the aspect of lost tax revenue but increased policing costs as criminal enterprise tries to take advantage.

Usage has been decreasing steadily with the current measures and you'll never remove it completely, so regulate it heavily to control quality and tax it massively to pay for PI films and healthcare costs.

Only person I’ve ever known grow tobacco was my grandad who used to do it on his allotment and cure it in his attic for his pipe. Smelt amazing.

Càfe Créme: My old dad was a Picadilly man, but always had a tin of CCs in his bureau, just to have the occasional one.
He also grew his own baccy when I was very young. I remember opening a big tin chest in the spare bedroom (did we all have one of those? The bedroom I mean) many years later which was near-full of cured whole leaves. I guess he couldn't have liked it that much!
Me, I loved the very occasional King Edward.

Given that the current policy seems to be working I don’t see the need for a ban. Prices are incredible and I think you can only buy packs of 20 now…is that right?

Giving up was a war of attrition for me. I cut back over about a 10 year period. Until I realised there was no point buying them anymore. I think that was about 5 years ago.
I walked past someone this week smoking outside a shop…realised I’ve become one of ‘those’ ex-smokers…it smelt disgusting!
I don’t vape or anything but it seems a lot less objectionable to me.

I can’t now believe we used to smoke in pubs and restaurants!

I always thought there could have been space for pubs to decide if they wanted to be smoker friendly or smoke free but I suppose it was more about protecting the workers within them.....but some great local boozers were lost as a direct result of the smoke ban.

I took my 1st ever flight in 1994 (one way ticket to greece) and I can't now believe I was allowed to smoke on it......seems madness now.

Personally think they should ban serving alcohol on flights but they won't cos its a cash generator

I remember reading that the air in planes was actually cleaner when they allowed smoking. When the ban was introduced the plane companies switched the air con/filters off to save money!

My missus is a serial vapist. She used to smoke a lot. She definitely says she feels healthier vaping and the science at the moment isn't throwing up any serious consequences from doing so.

I hate anyone smoking around me, but vaping doesn't bother me at all.

I've enjoyed them all and don't regret taking any of them (except nicotine).

I can go weeks without a drink, and literally years without other substances, return to them, enjoy them and then park them until the next time I'm partaking.

There's something different about smoking. It's insidious and it's not even that good. You're just staving off the withdrawal every time you light up.

It's horrible, it's shit, and it's the only substance I wish I'd never started on.

Best thing I ever did. Skins better, lungs clearer, don't need inhaler as much, and i don't fucking stink.

Honestly, you never realise how bad it smells until you give up and smell it in someone, makes me want to throw up now
