Before the Tory leadership contest got underway I couldn't for the life of me fathom why they were washing their dirty linen in public on TV when the public are not voting. They are all obsessed with PR guff and thinking too much about who has the best 'charisma' that might work with the people. First 2 were car crash TV and not surprised SKY debate has been ditched. The candidates and Tories have right royally fcuked up big style and have no coherent strategy or plan for the country. Hilarious in some ways but so shocking that with the country descending into chaos that they have got us in this position purely through their own stupidity and abysmal judgment - yet at a time when Boris had so much opportunity and power after election. The Conservatives have not learnt from the 1980s and remain indulgent, pompous, self protectionist, low tax obsessed, defense obsessed, anti public sector, downright nasty and vulnerable to sordid scandal in terms of both sex, business interests and off shore tax havens. None of these 5 candidates are willing to change this status quo and the most backward looking members of the 1922 Committee essentially control everything. Time for a GE and hopefully a change of government.

Trump/Johnson stadium tour in 5…4…

"Deep State"? What a wanker.

It's only Johnson's privileged upbringing and his old school contacts at the heart of the state apparatus that have kept in a job (and probably, out of jail) for all of these years.

Is the lazy, fat, incompetent, flag shagging, role-playing twat, seriously going to pretend he's some sort of anti-government revolutionary now? Unreal.

Not only does he do it he already has people who consider him an anti establishment crusader.

Latest round of voting is interesting. Tugenhat is out. Mordaunt has stalled but Truss only picked up a small amount of Bravermans votes so it isn’t over for her yet, however when Badenoch drops out Truss I would think would be looking to take the majority of her votes. Wouldn’t be surprised if they do a deal now and Badenoch drops out of her own devices.

No chance. She’s only 13-14 behind truss and who knows where Tugenhats votes will go. As you say Truss expected a lot more of Bravermans votes, I wonder if that will start making some of her current supporters wobble (I hope so)

I heard a rumour that last minute Patel and Wallace might come out in support of Truss to give her a final push if she gets down to final final three. I’d be disappointed in Wallace if that’s the case. Thought he might have better taste

Johnson's vote of confidence in his own government passes 349-238. Well played by Labour in fucking up the wording of the original motion.

She isn't getting too much out of the redistribution of votes even when that contender recommends it.
If that repeats you wouldn't expect too many of Tom's votes to drop for her.

Newsnight commented Truss would stand aside if Badenoch could demonstrate a path to the last two. In many ways empty words as showing that just isn't possible, but says a lot about how poor Truss has been that it even comes up.

All just politics anyway. He’s going, the Tories are picking a new leader and they all fuck off for summer this week

My preference would’ve been for the leadership contest to be wrapped up by early/mid August though

I wish Truss would…still concerned if she got to final two v Sunak she might win. I can’t believe so many prominent MPs have backed her (well I can when I look at the names), do they not look at the National polling

Has a government ever no confidence voted itself?

It's why members just shouldn't be allowed a vote - the activists are by definition the extreme ends of the spectrum, so you end up with... Johnson and Truss (and Corbyn).

That said if you were Sunak, you'd have confidence in trashing Truss... wouldn't you?!? At least Johnson had a charm of sorts - what does Truss offer to appeal to the country?!?

The “truth telling” candidate ladies and gentlemen:

I think that’s as much let’s try to discredit a candidate we’d worry about if elected. She’s worked at Maccys to support herself who gives a fuck if she did enough hours to pay tax or not. Think Nick needs to get a life*

If he proved she didn’t work in Maccys fair enough call her out, but it sounds like she worked to support herself through Uni and I’m sure at some stage in her life would’ve paid taxes on a low salary, whether at Maccys or not

*says the man who scanned through Unites report on a Sunday afternoon in order to prove a point 😂

She’s literally saying ‘I’m one of you normal guys - here’s a massive pile of made up bollocks to prove it’

Another fucking talentless grifter.

Ah that's fine it was probably true at some point. Interesting you applied much more scrutiny to Unite

It’s not a massive thing but if you make truth your USP expect to get called on minor untruths. And TBH I don’t think tax is the biggest worry when you’re on low pay, benefits and tax credits make up a lot. It feels like more Tory “every solution is a tax cut” logic.

Can't imagine why people are asking for pay rises when 'real pay is now dropping faster than at any time since records began in 2001'.

Article also states that the number of vacancies has increased. Why does supply and demand not seem to apply to wages? In the sector I work in we've been told for about 15 years now about a huge kills shortage and every company I've worked for has struggled to recruit yet wages are stagnant at best.

Be genuinely keen to know who of the remaining 4 candidates, Grendall and Alan Dugdales Moustashe firstly want to win Tory leadership and secondly who they think will win?

I haven’t got her payslips so don’t know how many hours she worked. The guy is guessing she didn’t ever work enough hours to feel the pinch from tax. It’s a bit much to start shouting ‘liar’ was my point

I agree about tax cuts not being the right solution but someone’s attempting to take her down for a comment she made in a live debate about knowing what it’s like to be in low paid work 25 years ago. Which it appears she does. Thought it was a bit OTT/desperate of that guy. If he had evidence of her not working in Maccys fair enough as I say

She said she was working minimum wage and getting taxed when it was neither.

Why do you delve into the specifics when it’s someone from a union but not her?

Don’t think the live debate is the only time she’s said it though Steve. I think it’s something she’s repeatedly said since announcing her candidacy.
