Shaw: I won't ditch the diamond (9 Viewers)

But Shaw wIll Play It hIS way
RICHARD Shaw has given a vote of confidence to the midfield diamond that earned Coventry City their superb Capital One Cup victory against Birmingham on Tuesday night.

But the stand-in boss stressed that he will use whatever formation he thinks will get the job done on the day and that players have to be flexible enough to make any system work.
Some City fans criticised Andy Thorn for persisting with the tactics that he introduced during his own caretaker spell at the end of the 2010/11 season.
But Shaw pointed out: “We've used it five times this season and we haven't lost yet.
“I am very much open to different systems but I think there is a lot made of for mations and systems and a lot of nonsense talked about them. I think you play the system according to the players you have.
“We went 4-4-2 against Wrexham in the pre-season and got murdered. Because it was pre-season we were just trying out different things.
“Everyone now seems to play a man in the hole, a man in front of the back four and if teams do that and get on the ball really early you really do have to look at it and change your system accordingly and try to get a foothold in the game.
“We have played the diamond system this year with two up front which is always going to be a threat.
We're unbeaten in five games and every team has adjusted themselves to playing that system, so that's all credit to us.
“Birmingham came to our place on Tuesday and played a diamond because we did and they're a Championship club.“
He added: “In the first half against Bury we were different class and had we won no-one would have even thought about the system. The second half was abysmal so people were saying the diamond system is not very good.
It's all about the personnel.
Players make the system work because if you have got someone who switches off then there's a problem. But, if, like on Tuesday, everyone is on top of their game, in the right slots and right areas, it can be a real handful.
“We played 4-3-3 at Millwall last year and I absolutely loved it. But we had two wide players with pace and we haven't got that here so you have to play according to the squad you have got that's being pragmatic.
“If the team played in a diamond for most of last year and got relegated then people will be down on it anyway; if Coventry had stayed up people would have said `what a great system it is.' “But whatever system you play you expect players to track back and tackle. If you look at the Premier League no-one plays with two up front now. They all play with one up front and one off him or two wide players coming because it causes problems.
“If you can get a centre-forward working like Stephen Elliott did on Tuesday night it makes life so much easier. Carl Baker, too, played his position really, really well. I told Carl that there are times in games when he has disappeared and we've been poor in terms of the structure and shape in the team because if one man doesn't do his job then the whole thing falls apart.
“We're going to lose matches this year by teams being better than us but what I hope is that we are not going to lose games where we haven't worked hard enough. I want all 11 players and all the subs to come off knowing that they have put a shift in. If it is not good enough at least you have earned your corn and you have given the crowd something to shout about.“
If Shaw manages to inspire the Sky Blues to a few more displays like Tuesday's cup win it will certainly strengthen his chances of getting the job on a permanent basis. So far the club have received around 40 applications and a number of other inquiries for the post which is advertised on the League Managers' Association website with a deadline of 5pm on Monday.
One man who is understood to have applied is former City striker Noel Whelan, although the club categorically deny they have approached Oldham Athletic with a view to getting permission to speak to Paul Dickov.
But the man in the driving seat said: “I expect by the weekend there will be about 150 applicants but that's out of my control. I like to think that I have got a good chance. I do want it and I would love the chance to manage this football club and I believe I know the players well enough and that I can affect their performance and do a good job.
“I've enjoyed every minute so far and all I can do if try to improve the players on the training pitch.
Results and the people above will dictate what happens but hopefully I can show them that I am enthusiastic enough to be given a chance.“ Shaw has already spoken to development director Steve Waggott about drafting in a couple of loan players, presumably when the loan window opens next month after tonight's 11pm transfer deadline.

Really like Shaw's views on the game. Whilst initially I didn't want the cheap option he is impressing in talking a good game. If we beat Crewe then he's got a huge chance.

As much as I wasn't too concerned about Thorn's piss poor post match interviews and I defended him for them, this new cogent and coherent approach is very pleasing and reassuring.

Have to say that he appears to speak with a lot more intelligence than Andy Thorn ever did.

Shaw comes across really well in this article.

No matter what AT said he was never going to change his shape or the way he set his team up for 90mins.. Shaw has stated that too much is made of shape and formation, its about being flexiable as a player to change what your coach is seeing infront of him to alter or effect the games result.

I like Shaw and think he is saying the correct things, but im still not 100% he should be given the job yet, but my worry if he doesn't get it will he walk....

Me too mate!

It was clearly the same diamond and i couldnt understand how people were disagreeing with me.

I think this just proves they were viewing with anti Thorn glasses on.

For once I actually read a 'managers' article...I normally would skim read through it just so I didn't have to read the same nonsensical points. But this was interesting & pleasing.

How many actually said it wasn't the diamond?

About 2 people, most said it was the diamond with a bit more width and effort. Let's ignore that and turn it into a Thorn debate again. Just having a shower, I'll be back with a strong case in 5 minutes.

Shaw gets one victory - using the exact tactics and players Thorn would have and suddenly he's the best man for the job?!

Let's not get carried away here - he isn't a Manager any mote than Thorn was.

Thing is, Shaw is not Thorn and a lot of people can only see that as a good thing.

When was the last time we came back from a losing position to win under Thorn?

AT fell short of what is required to be a football manager. The jury is still out for Richard Shaw.

This isn't a season to give a novice a chance - that's my worry. We have a squad good enough for promotion - we just need an experienced Manager who won't make basic mistakes. For once we're not searching for a miracle worker - just someone who'll get 7 or 8 out of 10 from these players each week.

I am not for a single minute advocating Richard Shaw for manager.

We need to get it right this time. Shaw could well prove to be a good manager, who knows. Are we prepared to wait and see though?

No one is lauding Shaw as a tactical genius, he's just impressive in the way he comes accross. It's refreshing. It's almost as if he sees what we do.

A lot of our previous managers have talked the talk. Thorn to a certain extent when he first took over as caretaker, but CC, AB, ID all sounded very impressive and talked a good game.

I'm not saying Shaw isn't a good manager or won't be a good manager. I'm just saying that he seems to be getting praised for a lot of things that our previous managers did too.

Shaw and thorn may not have been managers previously, but that is where the similarities end.

Thorn - scout, no uefa badges, no coaching experience

Shaw - 5 years coaching experience, assistant manager

Shaw is much more qualified to step up to manager.

The only one I'd say talked half decent is Boothroyd, Coleman and Dowie spouted the same nonsense week after week. Root and branch etc.

Yep, agree with that.

Coleman talked bollocks and Dowie was away with the fairies. I don't even think Andy Thorn knew what Andy Thorn was talking about.

Boothroyd talked the talk though.

Been impressed with what Shaw has come out with thus far.

What do we do if Shaw is in charge for say the next 2/3 games and we win them all? Do we change him and bring a "proper" manager in, or would that disrupt the players, do we give him job and results suddenly drop off because of the pressure SISU put on him. I think we take our time on interviewing and see what is out there, whilst watching results and PERFORMANCE. I like Shaw i think he may deserve a chance, but only if it is going to benefit our club. That will not be revealed after just 1 game.

I would be dissapointing if Richard Shaw didn't get the chance to show what he can do. At least for a month. Maybe until after the Arsenal game? He deserves that at least.

If we get good results he needs to be seriously considered. Bad results would make any decision easy.

Problem is it is very difficult to know who to select. It's down to a large slice of luck in the end.

Black and neilson could have achieved and they were the same as Shaw and are the 2 managers who should never have been sacked. Thorn also untried was a failure but was clearly less suitable.

Dowie had success at Oldham and also palace but after a great start was a dud. Same with boothroyd.

So we don't know. My feeling is I hope another candidate gets it and he stays and learns the skills required to enable him to give it a go next time.

What experience did Chris Powell have in management? He took Charlton up as champions in his first full season.

I'm not saying Shaw should be manager, but he certainly shouldn't be discounted.

Which is what I have been saying all along and what I was saying when AT was sacked and people on here were saying 'Oh no!' to Shaw as soon as his name came up, even though people have no idea whether he was going to be able to do the job successfully or not.

NEW MANAGER: TAKE NOTE!

What have I been saying about the diamond formation suiting us, and I don't even bloody work at the club! Shawsy knows his stuff and I think if we beat Crewe comfortably, he should be given a few more games to prove he isn't a 'Thorn'.

Viva la diamond!

Respect for Thorn for bringing this in! :applause:

You can say it Otis but people aren't going to want to hear it I'm afraid. I've thought about this and all I see is the fact we go on about experienced this experienced that but in 10 years what did all these experienced managers done for us? Nothing really.

They talked the talk but invariably haven't walked the walk. The only managers who have done anything decent (Black, Nillson) have been fired in favour of experienced managers and we still haven't got anywhere.

Shaw has a good head on him. I've been saying this since the start. I think he'll make a fantastic manager but it's whether it happens now or later in his career. Do we give him a chance or do we go for experience again like we have before?

I personally think bringing someone new in is going to disrupt the team on a large level and said manager will need to get to know his players so having Shaw around till be good and he can help in that area. It's just what people believe is right for this club etc.

But really we can't do anything about it. Its SISU's decision and they'll get whoever they see fit. Our job as fans is to stand behind whoever they get jn regardless of whether we see it as a good or bad appointment.
