I’m so baffled as to why people still seem surprised that over 900 minutes of Rugby 7’s in a short space of time takes such a toll on the pitch.

So because the Commonwealth have it, they won't allow the pitch that they ruined to be looked after? Who's bright idea is that?

As I’ve said before, I’m no groundsman…or even a gardener but playing equivalent minutes of 8 football matches (albeit with less player on the pitch) over a three consecutive day period, I presume it’s not going to matter what is done to the pitch, it’s going to be fucked

Unless we requested EFL to move first couple of fixtures away and were refused (some comments that we did but I’ve not seen anything from club), we are partly to blame for this shambles

It’s like everyone fucked off on holiday, came back and were shocked that 49 games of rugby had been played and the pitch was in a state.

Yeah Boddy said we tried that.

Especially when people were literally showing videos as it was happening of the pitch being torn up.

"Nothing to worry about, this is amazing for our city to host this event"

Oh fuck off.

Exactly mate, bang on.

Between City and Wasps games you’ve got an entire week, occasionally two weeks to remedy the surface. It can be done. We’d have had no chance to get it sorted this time.

Did he say when this was requested ? Sorry if this has been released, I’m playing catch up on here !

If CWG already had exclusivity until 14 Aug when we returned from Blues, then we physically couldn’t have played at home first couple of weeks anyway

If it was all agreed that CWG would reduce period until end July and then EFL refused at the same time on that basis, then they’re also part of the shambles ! As Tommo said I just can’t see how it was physically possible to get pitch in a playable state even if it had been declared ‘safe’

I can’t see how it would have been played anyway the outside area is packed with temporary canopies ensigna etc it would have been a mess trying to get in and out

The sub lease agreement for CCFC to groundshare would have had to have been approved by the EFL and to have been in line with their regulations:-

“Except in cases where a Club seeks consent to enter into a ground-sharing agreement with another Club, it shall be a condition of any such consent that the ground-sharing agreement shall contain provision to ensure that:

the playing of any of the Club’s first team matches will always take precedence over the activities of the other party to the agreement;

the Club shall have the ability to postpone other activities scheduled to take place on the pitch in the immediately preceding 48 hour period where in the opinion of the Club, acting reasonably, there is a risk that such activity may result in the subsequent postponement or abandonment of a match to be played under the auspices of The League;

and where a sport other than football will be played on the pitch the playing surface shall be a hybrid (i.e. Desso or equivalent) construction, the specification of which shall be subject to the prior approval of the League.

For the avoidance of doubt, the requirements of this Regulation 13.4.3 will apply to all existing ground share agreements with effect from 1 July 2019.

Guidance Clubs must have primacy of fixture and show the ability to postpone any other activity on the pitch on 48 hours’ notice. “

So wasps, while pointing out that CWG had leased until 14 August, presumably would have been in breach of an approved tenancy if they had not allowed CCFC to play their home fixtures. We all assume that there will be a clause in the tenancy agreement required the playing surface to be of a standard defined by the league, so Wasps will be in breach of that clause.

I have a feeling the CWG statement is being misinterpreted. It refers to de-rigging which would be taking down the signage, getting rid of all that stuff in the car park etc. Don't see any reason why after the last game has been played the pitch couldn't be worked on. I think what they are saying is they agreed to suspend the de-rigging work on certain days to allow games to take place.

Who was looking after the pitch during the games, presumably the Wasps ground staff, I've only really watched the cricket but that is definitely the regular Edgbaston ground staff.

The issue from our perspective may be gaining access, there's been numerous reports of how difficult people have found it to gain access to the site and there was still CWG events taking place on site, in the hall, until Saturday.

Really interesting post. The missing piece is if Wasps had already signed an agreement with CWG before our return, CCFC and EFL would’ve been aware of this and agreement should’ve been reached at the time of our return as to what’s best to do…rather than all cross their collective fingers. For example EFL agree to make an exception to the rules as Wasps already had a contractual agreement with CWG, and the alternative was us not being able to return to Coventry

Very good point about maintenance during the games.

I think it hasn’t been adequately watered, wasps probably can’t afford the water bill.

This does raise the issue of why did Wasps hire the arena out for concerts when they already had the CWGs commitments? They would have known that they needed time to establish a new pitch and by accepting those bookings they were negligent.

I'm really surprised why more vitriol is being poured on the doorstep of The Commonwealth Games - they SHOULD have played it at a fucking rugby ground where there is no footy played

To be fair when they signed the deal it was a rugby ground, no football was played there.

OK - sorry, i had missed that snippet - but you would have thought there would have been plenty of time after City became long-term tenants to have made adjustments to the arrangements, including bringing in a new modular pre-grown playing surface.

It sounds like the CWG was already planned before we returned, so it was knew about and there had been an idea we’d play first 2-3 games away. Boddy said he was told we couldn’t do this. It sounds like everyone was crossing their fingers and hoping for the best tbh.

Why not? There is clear precedent for this. Even Tottenham had their first six matches away when their stadium opening was delayed (and yes i know they are Prem not EFL)

Could it be ready for Wigan at home on 16th? Not looking good so far, greedy fucking Wasps taking the money and no investment it the stadium/ infrastructure.
They are hardly greedy, it sounds very much like they are teetering on the brink of insolvency.
Just imagine if SISU were to withhold rent over the pitch debacle, that might be enough to finish them off 🙄

Shame these people wouldn't listen because they had a hard on for Wasps moving here.

We don't want a partnership with Wasps, we want them to fuck off, let's keep everything crossed that they go under, and an Invester buys the stadium and buys SISU out.
