Embarrassing fans at away games (18 Viewers)

ha, I say that I prefer football the way it was 20years ago and that makes me a 'chav' or a kid. For saying I don't agree with it being a happy clappy family day out? But if you're going to be childish, hows your missus and my kids doing?

Its a bit of both. Banter and micky taking is great but hardened swearing, fighting and stone throwing is all a bit dated. Making that young lad cry was disgusting and the crowd around those guys/lowlives who did it were rightly upset. Also solo chanting is always a give away that you are not the full ticket. Fan base now includes women and children so some common decency is required. I just wish the police who were right next to it would have a word sooner.

I'm with Earlsdon. I much preferred it when going the football had an edge and it was a very tribal lads day out.

Not all this sanitised, face painted, all happily drinking together bore fest.

Football is primarily a GAME. Games are to be enjoyed.
Professional football is a business - one which has seen a healthy increase in attendances since respectful people have observed the risk of exposure to mindless thuggery has reduced significantly too.
Accepting this tribal thing of yours - maybe the club ought to take the lead & introduce one designated section behind smoked glass where home & away thugs can can mingle undisturbed by police & stewards. If they want to fight then they can safely do so in the knowledge that they cannot be seen. They just have to sign away right to NHS treatment & police protection before entering as well as accepting if they are injured they have no right to blame anyone other than themselves. Any anti-social activity outside of that area the police can get on with cracking down on & really issuing stern penalties.
If this happened how many would enter into this section? Not many is my guess.

Agree, we all like an atmosphere but that is different to yobbish behavior.

The Police are no good with that type of thing, I find the Police in general just go for easy targets.

I had to laugh yesterday as all that was going on a steward come up to the person next to me and asked him to take his feet off the top of the seat in front!

You've given the exact pathetic answer, I expected somebody to give. Nobody is talking about fighting or bullying ballboys. Just having an atmosphere with a bit of an edge. I agree completley with Garrsion. Sadly a lot of you seem to be of 'the soccer am' generation, all seater stadiums, family crowds and goal music. I miss the old days.

Well I don't miss them. The atmosphere & edge is missing because there are lower attendances than when we were in the premiership, there are poorer performances & results on the pitch & the fact that we cannot unite constructively behind the club, team nor even individual players it seems

I think there is a bit of false memory syndrome going on here.
I went to City away games in the 70s and 80s. I don't remember any aggro against women and children. Abuse to officials and oppo fans and players, of course. The "hard" lads were looking to fight opposing fans not turn on their own. If you didn't want to get involved you had to turn up early, stay in the ground for a bit or duck and dive. I never felt City fans were anything but like my extended family, who would stick together and help out if you needed it. That has gone now and behaviour and lack of respect is making the current atmosphere toxic.

I can't believe some of what I have just read.

Does anyone agree with the 10 year old ballboy getting abuse? If so would you be happy for a 10 year old lad of your own to get abuse of an idiot like this?

Women and kids at games....I know a few women STH's. I know a few women that go to away games. They love the game. They love our club. Very knowledgable. Support our team vocally. Everything you would want from a fellow Cov supporter. I love going to games with them.

Tribal day out? I love to go on a boys day out. I love to have a good drink before the game. Fighting? Old hat. Only for idiots. I started going to games in the early 80's. I was one of them idiots then. I have now grown up. I am not proud of what I got up to nearly 30 years ago. The last two times I have had any trouble of any kind was with Cov fans. The last one was the worse. I had just left a pub with a few lads when I saw a few Cov lads starting on a Fester fan in front of his partner and two young lads. When I shouted at them to stop and ran over they started on me. Must have thought I was a Fester fan. Ended up walking the family to the ground. Luckily the father only had cuts and graises. Hope the lads got over it quickly. So does tribal mean attacking defenceless people? In front of their families?

If you want a good day out have a few beers and watch the game. If you want to fight then either take up boxing, cagefighting or some sort of martial art. Or is it a problem that you might come across someone that can look after themselves. Or is it you can't run when needed?

Football is a game for the people. So who thinks you must be a caveman who is pissed and don't like women and can abuse who they want when they go to a game because they have paid for their ticket?

Dude I know your a kid :) / Too young to remember
Ha 'dude' I'd rather be 'a chav' than use gimpy dialogue like that! No I'm not a kid, but I'm fairly sure you are, enjoy your happyclappy liberal views. All of you are taking this too far, didn't hear all the blues fans going on and on at eachother on tues when some fans abused a ball boy and willis.

You miss the old days? Lots of Cov chavs causing trouble then running away when the trouble starts?

Were you around in the 70's when it all started? I wasn't

Were you around in the 80's? I was. Was it a laugh? Did you ever try to go to away games at places like Chelsea, West Ham or even the Brummie teams? Was it fun? Seemed like it at the time. I was young. I was stupid. Had a few close calls. It was tribal as you think is good. Rioting at some games. Wear your team colours and you were a target for many. Top flight games only getting 8,000 crowds. People scared to go to games or even go out. Getting put in hospital because you wanted to go to a game of football.

Have some fond memories, but not good memories. Close escapes. Great away days. A lot of people didn't even go to the game. The game was a reason to cause trouble. If you were about them days you wouldn't want them back. I remember one game at Chelsea. We kicked ass for once. Felt so good. Then someone that I was with noticed my back had been slashed when back in Cov. All for going to a game of football. A few more mm and it would have been my back. Good laugh hey? Yes some good good tribal memories, but when I look back I know I was such an idiot. Thought it was a good idea to look after the honour of Cov.

I am so glad that things have changed. I wouldn't go these days if it all came back. I am not a keyboard warrior. I am not scared of a bit of trouble. I have grown up though. I realise how stupid it is. I have my views. I defend my views. I don't hide. I have a good time at games. I have met a few from here. Everyone of them have been the sort of person I love going to games with. Meeting up with a few more in the next few weeks. Many more have met or seen my eldest lad at Yeovil. He stood out as he wore a Motherwell top in the middle of the Cov fans. I love football. I don't hide. I love talking football. I love going to games. I detest people that have a go at women. I detest people that have a go at kids. I detest people having a go at my family. Have a go at me. The odds are I will take it on the chin. I have mellowed out now. I have grown up at last

Can anyone tell me what is so good about violence at football. Or even having a go against women or kids? If I saw the idiot having a go at the ballboy I would have stopped it. Not everyone is the same. That is what stewards and the police are for. Don't have a go at people that didn't stop it. Sounds like a few people did say something. You hear of so many things going wrong these days though for standing up for what you believe.

These so called fans spoil the day i mean what is the point on picking on a ballbay just because he was slow to react.. ok our fan who vented their anger was ott but was because he was most likely pissed off like most the players failed to show up.
As for fans fighting with one another.. it is embarrasing. You should not be at a game for trouble but to have a good time with your mates and win or lose have a good day after working all week/month.
Our support at crewe was embarrasing and if carries on like that well..... il be thinking twice about going and i been going 22years (i am 26).
I have been in and witnessed trouble but nothing major gone on since millwall three yrs ago n was 2005ish before that. Time to grow up boys no one interested in it anymore hence why our old main lads dont go or stay out of it unless it lands on them.
Grow up support the team we in it together so ffs stay together.

What actually happened to the ball boy?

As for away days. You can't beat an all dayer away with the lads. Going on the train, having a laugh. Usually the football spoils the day. Give me a football match 20-30 years ago over today borefest. Can't smoke, can't drink, can't swear and get a banning order for offensive language.

Saturday was all about letting all of the working week anger out. Now it's just mostly a middle class sport with working class priced out.

Great idea, bazza. Why don't we convert the away end for this purpose?!

It is not surprising that our support is dwindling, When you read the views of some on here- it isn't fun if the atmosphere and environment are hostile; it's bad enough with the standard of football. Today's ten year olds are tomorrow's adult fans (hopefully). I don't take my granddaughter anymore, as I don't want to scar her for life. I doubt I will take my grandson. And so the river runs dry......

What idiots (IMO).

working week anger, what kind of job do you have!!!!

Love going on the all dayer with the lads at the football, you know that you can still do it now and can have a drink in most grounds still so nothing has really changed!!

You don't get banned for swearing. You get banned for being offensive. I have never been banned for swearing. Been told to stop a fair few times though.

Smoking....not many places you can now. It is not just at games.

Drinking.....rarely sober at games.

Middle class prices? Save up £30 a month and you have enough for a season ticket. Working mans affordability. What costs the most is transportation costs. Nothing to do with football.

I'd hardly call paying twenty odd quid for one game of Third Division football an affordable or acceptable price. Modern football is a sanatized, boring, middle-class rip off.

Well stop fucking going to the games. No one's forcing you to pay £20/£30 a week and the rest of us could WATCH FOOTBALL like we want to without listening to fucking morons like you swearing at players for making a misplaced pass. If you want a day out with the lads then go to the fucking pub and watch some football there on TV.

As soon as Crewe scored on Saturday I saw at least 20 "fans" just leave to go to the pub and asking around to see if anyone else wanted to come. Fuck off the lot of you - we need SUPPORTERS to help our club at the moment not pricks like the yobs abusing the ball boys.

Also, can you imagine what Kilbane's saying to all his mates in the game about CCFC at the moment?? Who the fuck is going to join us to be consistently called a 'wanker'? Our reputation among the inner circle of football must be the absolute pits.

So offensive language is worthy of a banning order in your eyes?

Smoking - Its outside so why should it be banned??? In the concourse yes but outside?

Middle class price - Yes it is, when it was a working class sport it was affordable to all. I know plenty who cant afford the prices. £250 week wage, having to pay for petrol, car, house, bills, food, kids etc... We subsidise for the ridiclous wages. and season ticket has nothing to do with the discussion.

So Kilbane is blameless in all this? Great role model to kids that. Was he consistently called a wanker throughout the match? Dont think so

So are you saying you don't understant the difference between swearing and being offensive? Swearing won't normally get you arrested. Offensive behaviour will.

Smoking is illegal in enclosed areas or in confined spaces where non smokers can't easily get away if they wish. I am a smoker. I don't understand what you are trying to say.

And are you saying that any pastime that costs as much as a season ticket a year is a middle class and not working mans hobby? Is it footballs fault that everything else costs so much these days? Would you be happier if our club never offered more than £500 a week so you could get a season ticket for £100?

I earnt that as a student last year. A high number of clubs didn't even offer student concession so the average away game would cost me £50 just to get there and get to see the game. I simply can't afford that even without the commitments CUS has so I sympathise with him there. In Germany all away fan travel is free-what a difference it'd make here.

And a season ticket has nothing to do with what you are saying? Why is that when anyone can buy them. Buy one of them and you can go to all the home games.Shall we not mention the other packages you can also get? How about young kids getting in for free? Older kids with cheap tickets. Concessions for pensioners and students.

Not all tickets are over £20 either. But you are trying to make it sound as though if you like going to football games it will cost everyone over £20 per game and only the middle class can afford it. We all know this is wrong.
