There are so many people looking for an excuse not to vote Tory, trust me on that. The problem is, and you can see it even in this thread which is a highly left leaning one, that there is very little self-critique. I well and truly agree that the Tories, for example, are generally a bunch of pricks and their behaviour, policies, and the like do not deserve to be rewarded with support from the general public. Yet, the opposition isn't doing enough to pull the swing voters away.

Look at Sweden and Italy, almost no mention of that here at all. If there is, it is just some sound bites about 'the far right'. Unfortunately, the left is being rejected everywhere at a time where they should be clearing up. I know people on here will try to argue that I am wrong, but I don't know how many times I can say it as someone who falls into the category of a swing voter myself. The left need to stop blaming everyone else and sort themselves out, they'll then win easily and probably stay in power for a considerable length of time. A large chunk of people voting for the Tories come election time aren't coming out of the polling stations with massive grins on their faces but they'll keep voting for them until they have another party to vote for that they can relate to better on all matter of levels.
There’s the other point too that countries that have recently been run by right wing populists are turning their back on it. Trump out in the US, Bolsonaro currently polling to lose 50% of the vote he got at the last GE in next month’s GE and lose the presidency, France once again rejected the far right, not to mention opinion polls in the UK. It’s sitting governments that are getting hit due to the current world economic climate, left or right doesn’t come into in many ways. If things are shit in a country a sitting government feels it at a general election.

judging by the starmer speech they must think a ge is near
The policy announcements too. There’s finally something to judge Starmers labour on. Still don’t rate Starmer other than at least he’s not Truss or Boris but the policies being announced so far sit OK with me.

I’ll still vote tactically at the next GE but that’s likely to be Labour as the best chance of voting Pawsey out. Be a tall ask whichever party has the best chance so fully expecting my vote to not count.

Absolute no brainier. But it’s nice to see labour tap home an open goal instead of screw it into the stands.

Seems like Woodrow Wilson's trickle-down economics vs Roosevelt's New Deal.

All we need is a good war to pay for everything.

That's something Labour is excellent at.

Do you mean Herbert Hoover not Wilson? He was the person FDR beat

Wilson did go up against a Roosevelt just not the New Deal one

Truss seems very quiet since her special friend created his barmy budget do we assume she has headed off to Ukraine for some photo opportunities or is hiding in a fridge somewhere.

That would be the centre left in Sweden who got the most votes and increased their vote share? Or the centre left party in Italy that came second and whose vote share was static?

We know there’s a 20% nationalist vote in most countries, they voted Labour, then UKIP, then Tory, and now will probably either splinter into various fringe groups, coalesce around a NewKIP or not vote.

Point is they already vote. Non voters views are identical to voter views. Everyone with minority beliefs thinks that all those people out there that don’t vote are doing so because they hold the same minority views. Whereas most don’t care or don’t see the point where they live.

The number of politically engaged non voters is tiny.

I don't particularly want to get pulled into an argument or debate as I think I much prefer my life not getting wound up in the off topic chat in SBT, but I'm telling you as someone who would consider voting Labour or an equivalent parry, that they still aren't doing enough to win me over as well as many, many other people. I certainly won't be voting Tory either, but my grievances with them go far deeper. It'll be a long time before I forgive them for partygate amongst other things.

To suggest that Sweden and Italy have been some kind of victory for the left is also barking mad, though. It sounds like something off a reddit thread or as G would say 'sixth form debating society' or something. To not reflect on that essentially proves my point. France and USA as examples too, if the margins haven't set alarm bells off, then I don't know what will. The left are being rejected en masse.

I would like the Tories to get absolutely destroyed in the next election, and I'm not trying to be an arse here. I'm just splashing this thread with a slightly different opinion from another side so to speak.

What are you expecting from them exactly? They’ve made quite a lot of policy announcements this week, was there really nothing that tickled your fancy?

So only one party in Italy is nationalistic? Guess they will not be forming a government then as all the other parties will oppose them? Are you saying League and Forza are non nationalistic parties?

Your claim was the left was in decline, it isn’t, the centre right is.

Youre not the only one here with a fringe opinion by any measure, myself included. And in countries with PR where upstart parties can make an impact quickly populism has certainly been on the rise in all forms.

But my point is simply Labour don’t need to get that 20%, they’re gone. A huge chunk of fairly moderate Brexit voters like my ex mother in law who just want a better NHS and mortgage rates down will be fine with Labour not taking on the globalist elite.

Reading courses not working out, huh?

Miss you in the Ukraine thread BTW, your boy Putin is taking one hell of a beating. The ultimate fate of your chosen strong man leadership style.

Don;t really care if it's a none of the above, but now the Tories are trashing their reputation for economic competence along with just about everything else, just what is the reason to vote for them now?

Exactly. They always had a pretty big argument with the economy, there's no argument now

Banks ramping up the mortgage rates nationwide two year fixed well over 5% and others withdrawing the current offers what a disaster this crazy man has created.

If the left leaning and Italian left weren’t incompetent and put the country before bullshit they’d have stopped Meloni from going on to be PM, which will be a short lived disaster before another technocrat government.
Voter disillusionment and apathy is a big problem across Europe and needs to be addressed.

Just out of interest why were they so incompetent? Policy offer or something more?

Decriminalisation of the user is where it should head rather than legalisation of the drug. The resource should be into the disbanding of all of the drug networks and crimewave that it funds. Making it accessible will not eradicate the issues that co-exist.

Have to say Labour have played this quite well so far in my view. Now we're back to a government that focusses on policies (however mental!) they now put their's up in retaliation.

And they can't help but look normal in comparison!

The only benefit I see in full legalisation is that we can tax it!
