COVENTRY City could unleash an on-loan strike force when they tackle Burton Albion in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tonight.

Richard Shaw seems certain to give a first start to David McGoldrick, who was a second-half substitute on Saturday after joining from Nottingham Forest in the final hours of the transfer window.
And he could be joined by Derby teenager Callum Ball as the Sky Blues try to bounce back from their bitterly disappointing 1-0 League One defeat at Crewe which saw front two Cody McDonald and Stephen Elliott replaced in the second half.
“Cody and Stephen were disappointed to come off but there's nothing personal when I make substitutions,“ said Shaw. “They played for two hours in a frantic game on Tuesday and that took its toll.
We looked a bit jaded in the first half so it was right to freshen things up and you're always looking for the opportunity to rotate your strikers and keep things competitive.“
The caretaker boss can take comfort from the fact that tonight's competition for League One and Two clubs will go straight to a penalty shoot-out if the score is level after 90 minutes, rather than face another gruelling spell of extra-time.
“We hope to get the job done by the final whistle,“ said Shaw, who will have to shuffle his midfield because Adam Barton is on Under-21 duty with the Republic of Ireland.
And the 43-year-old admits that he has mixed feelings about a game that offers a realistic chance for a day out at Wembley. “That will certainly in the back of the club's mind,“ he said, “and if you look at previous winners of this competition, like Southampton, it can give teams a kick-start. But in the earlier stages, if truth be told, it's a bit of a hindrance.
“Sometimes when you've lost the best thing is to get straight out there to rectify it but, as I said before the Birmingham game, I'd love to have a clear week to do some work on the training ground, take a bit of time to instil our values, explain what we want to be doing.
“But the games come thick and fast at this time of year and this is in the calendar so we'll have to deal with it.
“We'll field a strong side the rules say you have to start with six first-team regulars but it will give some of the other boys an opportunity. We have to rotate the squad, try to keep things fresh for Stevenage on Sunday, because that will be my main focus.
“This is a tough demanding league and people won't play all 46 games that doesn't happen in football any more.“
Shaw might well choose to give goalkeeper Chris Dunn an outing tonight but first choice Joe Murphy is a fan of the competition having been in the Scunthorpe side edged out 3-2 by Luton in 2009's extra-time thriller.
“You win four or five games and you're at Wembley,“ said the Irish international, “and that's a great opportunity.“ Right-back Jordan Clarke is the only fresh injury from the weekend.
n City's trip to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in the third round of the Captial One Cup has been confirmed as Wednesday, September 26, kick-off 7.45pm.
n City's Under-21 lost 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest yesterday.

cant help but thinking this is our only glimmer of hope of any success this season, and we maybe out by the end of the day...

5 games and we are at wembley, surely we have to take this seriously ?

Our other 2 strikers aren't exactly 'bagging' goals either. So who knows, they could be worth a punt.

we haven't kept a clean sheet since we beat R&D so although I hope that stat changes, I doubt it will. We'll have to score 2 to win I think.

CWR just confirmed that Shaw is likely to use the maximum 5 changes to the squad which include Ball, McGoldrick and ROD. This would most probably mean using one of ROD or McGoldrick in midfield, filling in the right side of the diamond (if Shaw keeps the formation). Not too sure I'd like ROD having a position which also relies on defensive capabilities. Whatever the changes are I'd personally still start Baker. Couldn't match his performance against Birmingham again at Crewe, but these one off games can be the sort that he can thrive in.

We must play 6 from the previous league match or 6 with the most appearances.

Be interesting to see who he picks.

It's not obvious who he will pick really. If he did change the maximum 5 players then I would like to see 1 or 2 of the kids have a run out: Certainly Daniels unless I've missed he's injured.

The five I would change are:

Murphy - I like Murphy and don't see how people get on his back every now and again. But it's relatively pointless having Dunn here just for injury cover, and these are the games we should give to him for experience and playing time. He should be more than capable anyway.

Kilbane - Rest him. Simply put he's old!

McDonald & Elliot - Both have worked non-stop so far this season and need resting. Also, after neither have been anywhere near prolific despite their work rate, it's fair some new options are tested.

Barton or Jennings - Are both fully fit anyway? One should get rested and the other substituted during the game.

I wouldn't change the defence as at times it's looked shaky and an extra game to help the gelling process should be an advantage.

Think we should start the lads up front and work from there. Seems to me that Cody and Elliot will be first choice this year. I am not a fan of changing too much so would leave back four maybe give Dunn a shot in nets and then i would Maybe change one in midfield. To be honest i want us to do well in this. If i was Shaw and i wanted to be considered an option as manager i would not be risking to much would play a strong side in search of the win and thats what i expect him to do. he wins this and he has won two cup games and had a narrow away defeat to crewe surely he would be happish with that. (however dont think he is an option in reality)

Well as Barton is away on international duty and Clarke is doubtful with injury theres 2 of the 5 changes. Add in the 2 strikers and we can make 1 more.

I'd love to make changes to the midfield. Kilbane needs a break, but with Barton on international duty I don't think we've got the depth to rest that many midfield players.

I'm still stunned that we prioritised getting another striker in rather than midfield cover.

I like the way the Telegraph state the obvious as usual. Yes they could both start. They could also both be on the bench. One or even both might not even be named at all.

Even though I can understand why they do it, I think it's a pretty crap rule saying how many changes you can make to your team. Surely a manager should be free to put whatever team out that he likes. I would rather us swap the whole team round tonight, give the young players and reserves a chance and the first team a break. In the Capital One Cup, league teams have to put out their strongest teams, where as PL teams don't. How can that be fair? If you've got a squad of players, you should be able to use them without being punished.

Would like to see Brown given a go in midfield tonight. Think he played holding midfield for Oldham and Man Utd reserves, would be interesting to see how he gets on in that role for us. We don't have many central midfield options so could see him having to play there this season.

Ball and McGoldrick are like the second choice strikers , but i do feel they could work very well together? both can hold the ball up, Mcgoldrick has pace and both are tall.
Only thing is i don't expect pretty passing football it will be more direct with players running off them both

Looking forward to Mcgoldrick and Ball playing, for all the negativity abut Ball he hasn't been given a chance and I think he has looked some what useful in his brief appearances

If ROD plays we will probably see him at the tip of the diamond which is gonna be a disaster

Not necessarily. Maybe that position will suit him if he has no pressure to provide goals.

Surely it would make sense to play McSheffrey over ROD tonight. Don't think ROD has a future here, he'll go out on loan when the window opens. McSheffrey could do with 90 minutes and a chance to get his confidence back.
