Easy to say after 6 clean sheets in 7 games but what pairing do we prefer / think will be more successful over the season

One pairing better going forward, the other appear better defensively

Bidwell for me player of the season to date - solid, consistent and effective.

I’m glad we’ve got Panzo and Bidwell but we do miss Maatsens quality

I like Bidwell and he's been one of our better performers this season....

...but Maatsen is the better player. He has a goal and 4 assists in 11 games this season. Bidwell is better defensively, but Maatsen is so much better offensively.

Nothing much between JCS and Panzo

Edit: actually looking at the stats there isn't much in it defensively between Bidwell and Maatsen

Its all about system, if we kept the last years shape and style Maatsen would be preferred. With the change Bidwell is a better option as he is the better defender.

Panzo and Salter its a straight choice as the old to new doesnt change that position. Id take Panzo purely on his ability to stay fit to play more games. Doyle out the 3 is the best footballer.

Bidwell has been an unsung hero in our defensive unit. He took a bit of time to settle in last season, but he certainly looks the part now. We'd definitely be in the shit if he picks up an injury. He and Fadz are different gravy.

JCS is better player than Panzo. Maatsen is better offensively than Bidwell, whilst Bidwell is better defensively. Bidwell has been immense so far this season and has really tightened up the left side defensively, Panzo for me despite the cleansheets still looks suspect positionally at times and his distribution isn't great, often passing being Bidwell.

Given the choice, I'd have JCS and Bidwell.

Im happy with the current pairing. You only had to look how Burnley tried to protect maatsen against us and how we tried to target him in the second half to see how they see his defensive duties.

Never a fan of JCS and prefer Panzo and Doyle. Maatsen will probably go on to be a better player than Bidwell, but at the moment I would prefer Bidwell in our team.

Maatsen is playing in effectively team Hollywood compared to what he was here, it isn't surprising he has licence to get forward a bit more and other players are taking better advantage of his crosses etc as well. I didn't rate him as highly as some on here probably did, but even this year he has been responsible for quite a lot of goals Burnley conceded whilst also getting sent off in one game as well. He is still very young but I feel there is a bit too much hype there at the moment. He's got chance to develop though.

As for JCS, he was a sick note and I didn't really feel he was anything stand out.

Bidwell is pretty solid and reliable, Panzo is doing fine. I think McFadzean now being in the form of his life is making the biggest impact to our back line though really.

It’s a shame we don’t have a Maatsen like player (I know we tried and it all went weirdly wrong with Adaramola), as while Bidwell has massively stepped up and shown he is a solid Championship defender, if we do revert back to playing the football of last year he’ll struggle to offer an offensive outlet.

That’s taking nothing away from him as he’s become Mr Dependable this year and I’d back him defensively 9/10, plus it’s great to have his experience.

JCS was good, but certainly a lot of looking back with rose tinted glasses. Panzo has struggled at times positionally, and the last few games his passing has dropped, but come the end of the season as his match sharpness and confidence continues to improve I think he’ll be more of a stand out than JCS was.

Have to say on merit Bidwell and Panzo are the stronger choice. Bidwell is yet to score but has come close on a few occasions and his defending is better. He gives 90 minutes. Panzo has great ability on the ball and a great left foot. He is quicker than JCS and still growing into the side. Not much to choose between him and JCS tbh but JCS did have off games while Panzo keeps growing better becuase you can see he loves being here. Bidders Mr Consistent and also getting better.

Right now and fully fit I'd take Bidwell and JCS and yet I expect both Maatsen and Panzo to go on and have better careers. Truth is all 4 are decent and we've been quite lucky in that area.

Prefer Panzo to JCS. Panzo is tougher, no way he would be bullied like JCS was at Luton last season.

He had others too, including Swansea at home. Had some good games too but really didn't get why he was highly rated. Maatsen should go much further in the game.

Here's JCSs stats from last season vs Panzo this season. Similar to the Wilson thread, our back 3 have been far less exposed this season as we have been set to far more defensively after the first 3 games compared with last season. Lot of talk of Luton, quite rightly JCS was awful, but look back at the goals and where Maatsen is, which is nowhere near JCS leaving him exposed. Bidwell gives Panzo a lot of protection and has never left him as exposed as Maatsen did.

Panzo and Bidwell, without a shadow. I liked Maatsen but Bidwell has been our best player this season imo. Even though the stats show JCS was better, Panzo can stay fit and is younger so can get better whereas JCS is entering his prime

Those that play at a higher level don't necessarily have to be as good defensively because they're not put under as much pressure. Once they fall from that level of club to one's which have to defend more often their best attributes (attacking) are used less often while their limitations (defending) are exposed more often.

I think Maatsen is a good player but having come through at Chelsea his defensive qualities won't have been tested to the same extent as someone at a smaller club, and therefore not have developed as much. He needs to improve them and I guess that's what his loans have been to try and do in order to make him a more rounded player.

Right now Bidwell looks a much better all round wingback, but that doesn't mean in the future Maatsen won't be.

Defo Bidwell, felt for him last season as a lot of our support expected him to slot in immediately.
He's been solid this year and can see him moving into the back 3.
Panzo for me hasn't filled me with confidence. He does get caught out of position and sometimes his passing has been poor.
JCS when fit worked and his distribution was better as was his ability to clear the danger at the 1st attempt. I hope come the end of the season Panzo will have won over me as he's got the talent and I fully expect the coaches to be working with him to develop and improve.
Maatsen.....Great attacking wise but with Bidwell's start to this season it's a hard argument to get him ahead atm.

JCS is the superior player compared to Panzo - it’s just a shame for him about his fitness issues.
