Not ones playing for us, but ones you've seen who you thought would have made a great signing for us.

The good: Me picking a 16/17yo Robert Earnshaw as being far more of a prospect than Simon Haworth if we wanted to sign a striker.

The bad:
When I lived in London, seeing Brentford fairly regularly. We should, I thought, have signed Paul Evans in a flash. Steve Sidwell was a nobody who'd go nowhere.

So I don't want the 'I saw Van Nistelroy and knew he'd be a star', I want the leftfield but realistic proofs of failure and why none of us should be let near a scouting team ;)

(Ashley Young's brother Lewis Young looked alright for Northampton too. Guess I caught him on a good day given his later career! And am sure the Philosopher would approve of me having wanted us to sign Akinfenwa when he was at Swansea. Not as a first teamer, but as a hulk to throw on late in a game. Guess he eventually got to our level... or we got to his)

Joel Cantona…. I used to follow Stockport a bit and he was class…. Then his brother went and stole the limelight and he fizzled to nothing. Big Kevin Francis there aswell…

I go to my local club Forest Green Rovers when I cant make cov matches, I vividly remember Watching FGR vs Southampton U21s ages ago and being blown away by a young Leon Best. He was miles ahead of everone else and bullied a mans teams defence for 90 mins. I went on GMKonline when I got home and said Cov should sign him up :D took a few years but we did sign him!

Wales International and current prem striker Keifer Moore had a season up FGR and I saw nothing in him other than him being a big lump.

its a hard one
Almost all on here without exception were not happy with signing Gyokeres and Sheaf
Yet at the same time the push for Ponticelli and now Tavares (still unproven)

I suggest we leave it to the experts (as long as that expert has hair so ruling out Andy Thorn and Russell Slade)

Joe Bunny. I think he was playing for Rochdale at the time and against us he was outstanding and totally bossed the game.

He's now at Macclesfield and doesn't seem to have ever pulled up any trees. 🤷

I always thought....oh, I can't remember his name. Arsenal youngster originally. Midfield general type. Quite small. Grrr. Can't for the life of me remember his name or who he played for against us. This is quite recent.

He's had a few clubs and is still very good, but I thought he would make it right at the top.

Unless someone can enlighten me, I will have to have a very long think on it.

Richard Sadlier and Tim Cahill were two i wanted us to sign when they were tearing it up for Millwall. One was a success, one disappeared due to injuries

I always thought early doors when at Bradford, Nahki Wells would be a good player.

Saw the other day he's a Bristol City but that early Bradford spell seemed like years ago and I thought be must be about 45 now but apparently he's only 32!

I don't believe he ever actually played for Arsenal. Went on loan and always appeared in either the Championship or League 1.

For the life of me I can't remember his name and a search brings nothing up either. Very tricky little player.

I guess he is still playing somewhere now, because I don't think he is that old.

Saw an 18 year old Glenn Murray playing for Carlisle and absolutely bossing it. Remember I told my cousin he'd be a Prem player and he laughed at me. Well who is laughing now!!

Dan Barlaser - I think he's excellent everytime I've seen him play, but he's still at Rotherham.

Also thought we should have sign Marcus Madison at one point but his career has gone to pieces.

I called both Sheaf and Gyokeres, just saying.

He's out of contract end of season if you believe Wiki, so start beating the drum now... ;)

As a kid used to regularly watch more reserve games than first team (not enough pocket money - don’t all “ahh, bless” at once)

Franz Carr. Thought he’d be the next John Barnes.

Fizzled out.

Dougie McGuire and Keith Thompson for us. Thought they’d be stars.

Fizzled out.

Currently:

That John McAtee who was a at Grimsby last year looks like he has something.

And now you’ve called me out, I’ve always liked the idea of someone either freakish quick or freakish huge on the bench to just mix it up and get opponents trying to second / third guess / prepare for chaos.

Thought Onandi Lowe should have stayed. Huge drug dealer yardie on the bench. Ok then.

Edit:

Alleged drug dealer. Acquitted.

Edit again:

Quote wiki

“He was arrested and charged in St Catherine in December 2007 for possession of marijuana.[27] He had been driving a car with 42 marijuana cigarettes, he posted the $300 bail and was released from custody.[28]”

Probably. Maybe personal use.

I once said Danny Fox should be England left back ahead of Ashley Cole…. Loved Fox but that was a really bad take
I am struggling to think of a good take to be honest. All my predictions failed. 😂

I used to be pretty good with City players though. Predicted England and top of the game for the likes of Pearce and Stevie Hunt.

As I am getting older, I now blame my eyesight.

There was a time when I thought Brandon Mason was a better left back than McCallum.

Always thought Bradley Dack would go on to be a very decent Premier League player and always remember one of his performances for Gillingham against us as being the best I had seen at the Ricoh.

Sadly looks like injuries will stop him making that final step.

To be fair, out of him and Dann I rated Fox higher and was surprised that we got more for Dann.

Fox seemed to have more dimensions; free kicks, crosses, Dann just a Champ level clogger.

Shows what I know.
Agreed.

I thought Fox was by far the better player for us and although Dann was good I didn’t think he’d go on to have the career he’s had.

Mines slightly different, and a bit deep!!!

I played against Chris Martin (not the singer) in youth leagues and everyone raved how great he was. I thought he was pretty shite, and given I was a GK who played against him many times, I never conceded to him. Never thought he would make it. Then one day there I am Carrow Road watching Cov, and who should come on and score not only the winner, but his first professional goal!! Set up by none other than Huckerby too! Cried all the way home.

I also played with a lad at youth level who was on Arsenal books, Absolutely amazing player who I was convinced would play for England. Sadly he took a different path and finished a 10 year jail sentence in USA just last year 😳

it’s a funny old game.

I was desperate for us to sign Nathaneal Ogbeta from Shrewsbury as the answer to our LWB problem.

He went to Swansea in Jan and has started zero league games.
