How many hard nut managers are there about these days?

Depends what we mean by hard nut. There are lots of Managers who command respect because they're tough cookies. Fergie, Big Sam - they don't have to be Vinny Jones.

They're also old school. Young guys who try similar don't seem to command the same respect and their similar actions are viewed differently. The reputation precedes the man.

We had a manager who bollocked the players and eventually they had enough and stopped playing for him, his name was Aidy Boothroyd

I distinctly remember the Radio 5 Live show not long after he left PNE when he was a guest in the studio. He spoke about the situation there, how he had turned the corner but desperately needed a couple of players on loan due to an injury crisis, but how the boards total lack of understanding of football meant that they wouldn't comply with his wishes. It reminded me of the weekly interviews Boothroyd used to give where he told us that he'd been guaranteed loan signings, and when asked when, he just said "soon". Then we loaned out Thomas....

So, in a nutshell, he'd love SISU, wouldn't he?

I know nothing about him. I'm not about to filter through his wiki and state meaningless stats or percentages.

I have read this thread front to back. Mixed messages across the board. Some fume that he hasn't 'done' anything, and in the same breath want someone who is on the way up, not down. Surely if you've 'done' something, we are not the next natural progression.

I personally don't care about attractive football. If we win, be it ugly, ill be happy. Football aside, we need a man manager, who can get the the best out of what I believe, a promotable team. They need to instill some belief. Wins will bring the fans, passy passy passy goal kicks will not.

As someone said, it doesn't matter where the manager came from, its where they take us that counts. And how we get there, I don't care.

Some good points, but passing football doesn't mean losing football! And I don't just mean Barcelona and Spain, who have the best players. Swansea massively over-achieve with the players they have whilst playing the most attractive football in the country, so it isn't always about having quality by any means.

As a rule the direct game is designed to reduce the gap in quality between sides, relying on physical and mental attributes to bridge the gap, but if we have one of the best sides in the division technically, doesn't it make more sense-and success more likely-for us to try and pass our way out of the division?

I agree, we need someone with experience, and he has experience at the highest level.. albeit for a season or 2

Not sure what people have against Brown. They do realise it's Phil, not Gordon, right?!
