Clearly squad depth is a problem - right now the first team squad with Gyokeres is a ramshackle hut with a Lamborghini parked out front. Fair play if you think we can afford to keep it - I enjoy driving it as much as the next person - but unless we can come up with another plan to raise cash then it’s not going to be a fun couple of years before we end up losing it anyway.

If he comes in and scores 5 goals and gets a few assists between now and the end of the season then it’s £250k (hypothetically) well spent at this level. If he flops then you can bring it up every other day ala Waghorn
There have been a few older signings we’ve (and other clubs) made in this league that have worked. If it’s not to the detriment of signing a younger ready to go first teamer theoretically at the level them I’m not sure why the fans should be bothered. If the new owner wants to spunk it then why would we complain….

Bidwell was a January signing and was apparently free (correct me if I’m wrong) and was 27/28 not 31.

He’s 31. Very unlikely that there is a big queue of clubs wanting to pay a fee.

As I said on a different thread I would have been delighted to sign him at any point in the last 10 years. I have some doubts over his current form and apparent attitude (essentially going on strike last January for an improved contract) but if he’s coming here there are some major positives.
1) the £400k comes from where? A couple of clown walls and then it gets repeated as fact.
2) we’ve picked up players with “attitude” issues before who have been model pros with us - and even Kasey Palmer had a reputation didn’t he?
3) if we sign him I don’t want him to be another loan. That would take us to 5 and he wouldn’t be able to play against Swansea (where he might be keen to make a point).
4) we are v v thin and need both experience and quality. He has both. And I’m pretty certain after watching today’s performance had he been on the pitch at certain points together we might have ended up actually shooting from some pretty promising positions.

Really surprised at some of the backlash. £400k really is quite trivial, especially when MR notes we can do something (paraphrasing) this window, so we have “something” available.
He is an experienced Championship player, capable of being a match winner and extra motivated as he’s a Cov kid and fan.
Attitude stuff isn’t fair or accurate.
But as it stands, there’s still nothing more than expressions of interest from both sides.
Same for another we’ve been linked with too.

Honesty think championship experience is overrated. We’ve just shipped out two of the players in our squad with some of the most experience. Our best players are ones that have come with a career ahead of them and a name to make. And McFadzean, who lets be honest is an anomaly.

That’s what made me laugh with the Huddersfield manager talking about Waghorn. “Knowledge of the league”. It’s worth absolutely fuck all.
We’ve also signed a lot of players who fit that bill who haven’t been anywhere near good enough at this level. Any player is a gamble but looking at our squad at the moment, Id rather go for a Patterson than 2-3 hilsner/kasteneers as he’s more likely to be able to play this season which is what we need. If there’s some great up and coming AM available from L1 available at that price, great, but I reckon thats unlikely.

Decent player but given the fact that (realistically) the play offs are unlikely this season at 31 he doesn't fit the club's recruitment profile ( as often stated by M.R.)..free transfer yes short term contract,transfer fee? not wise imo.

He played against us for Swansea recently, and he looked decent enough, quick and lively. He would fit it well here, plus the fact he supports the club and will be playing for a manager who openly rates him, is a win win in my opinion.

I think we'd all prefer to bring in players a little younger for development. That said, I'd be relatively happy going into next year in the Championship with O'Hare, Palmer, Paterson & Allen as attacking midfield options.

Hmm. I dunno. Allen is spectacularly ineffective at AM, Paterson seems to have lost it, O’Hare who knows when he’s back or what he’ll be like and Palmer still getting fitness. AM is a position younger who layers tend to do well at, Id rather wait for Burnley to go up and see if we could get Twine or something. But I guess beggars can’t be choosers.
I think I'd have to disagree with this.
I would say Robins has always stated the need to recruit a mix of young development players (Hyam, O'Hare, Sheaf etc) and more experienced players (Fadz, Waghorn, Bidwell etc).
The problem with signing experienced players is we don't have the budget to sign players at their peak, so when we're signing players with experience they're often on a downward trajectory and it's a bit of a punt - Waghorn the prime example.
