I've seen a lot of posts the past couple of days saying Palmer's been a good signing.

I'm not so sure.

What, actually, has he done? He's good on the ball, he does show commitment, but what has he done? His only league goal came when playing up front, he still struggles to join two consecutive games together despite being here half a season, and those he does play he falls off a cliff fitness wise... and all this on a huge (for us) salary.

You can see why managers take a chance as he has all the tools, but he just hasn't put them together for us yet.

Will he ever? I'm not even sure he's the right type of player for us as we are. To get the most out of him you have to let him wander, let others give him the ball, but we expect non stop work rate which, when his positioning isn't ideal, means he hurtles around trying to make tackles - should this even be his job?

This is not saying he's a failure but he does, to borrow a phrase, flatter to deceive up to this stage. I just don't see how you can call him a good signing based on what he's actually done for us to date - especially given his wages!

Lets hope he bursts into life the second half of the season

Two number 10s who look great (when fit) but can’t score.

Take your pick of from the following

Flatter to deceive/ luxury we can’t afford/all fur coat and no knickers/

Alongside O’Hare he would benefit a lot more, and on the few occasions they played together, you could see how.

Yeah this. When playing together they linked up really well and caused teams problems.

Playing behind a front two would also benefit him. We've seen how capable he is at through balls, if he had Vik pulling defenders one way and Godden/Walker on the other centre back I think he'd have a lot of joy.

I don’t think he’s used properly TBH. We’ve been using him as a second striker a lot and he’s at his best with players in front of him driving from deep and picking the final ball. Used like that he’s the best we have as at times last season our final third play was shocking.

I think he digs out a dirty ball in midfield and provides killer passes or opens up opportunities...like ohare not always about goals when missing we really notice the lack of what he brings

You want us to go back to 1880s tactics?

Personally I think he's been a good addition to the squad.

The two main things I like seeing in players, skill and effort level. He's got both. Yes, goals and assists need to be higher but it could be argued that assists aren't a one man metric. He does create things. He's clearly got a decent set piece in the locker. And I'm certain given the same game time, Palmer would score more than O'Hare over a season.

I like him. I think giving him a full season with us, then pre-season, he can be very useful next season.

That's still money down the pan though, given it looks like next season is when he'll actually be of any use to us, if he is.
Playing football for Coventry City.

It’s the sort of fee everyone is on the Paterson thread saying is negligible for a 31 year old…

Allen has played 90% of minutes for us, has two more goals fair enough and the same number of assists. On a per game basis Palmer plays more key passes, does three times as many dribbles, and is fouled twice as much.

I usually enjoy watching him, but I assume he’s one of the highest paid players in the squad, and you’d have to be very generous to say he’s been one of our top performers this season.

He was being paid £20,000 a week at Bristol with a year left. Cardiff City openly admitted they were looking at him and moved elsewhere when they looked at his contract - So it’s fair to say it’s a big wage / contract agreed with him

it’s another non scoring midfielder - 15 league goals in his entire career - Paterson managed 9 last season alone

It's difficult with plauers like him. Sometimes you watch him with his flicks and throughballs and think he's a genius and other times he seems to cruise through matches. He has got a decent tackle in his locker though. I think he's decent and should get better as (if) his fitness improves.

In the bristol game he created 3 good chances with through balls. 2 fell to waghorn and 1 to vik. I think he's fulfilling his side of the bargain but the team aren't finishing chances. His own finishing is quite poor too.

I think we should be happy with his addition - with OHares injury you need someone with movement and and trickery in the last quarter - January transfer time does not give decent players up !

We took on the final year of his contract as payment. He’s likely be on about £10k as a first team player so that’s essentially a fee of £500k.

Patterson had his best ever season for goal scoring last year and most of those came in a purple patch at the start of the season. He scored one goal after new year.

Over their careers Paterson has scored slightly more regularly (every 379 mins) than Palmer (475), but Palmer is 26 and Paterson is 31.

We are now flush with someone else’s cash so we won’t miss a trivial £400k, but we also definitely can’t afford a bit more for a more up and coming player. Also can’t make comparisons to other players-they aren’t relevant.

Palmer will cost us even on that estimate (which is likely to be conservative) £3 million

He’s not capable of playing 90 minutes - Bristol were hawking him around to get rid of him - we were the taker

A case in point being when we didn’t pursue Twine in summer 21. He’d have been available for a ‘trivial’ 6 figure fee. We pursued Bright instead

Theres no evidence of that it’s also gone
