Transfer Rumour Sean Maguire incoming (5 Viewers)

Preston fan here - thought I'd provide my view on Seani for a bit of balance. Maguire has been one of the biggest scapegoats in our side for years. He's an easy target as his goal return has been lacking but that doesn't tell the whole story. For most of his time with us he was used as a lone striker/target man under Alex Neil which obviously was never going to get the best out of him.

Sean Maguire might not be a fox in the box type 20 goal a season striker but when he has the ball played to his feet, he is excellent at holding up play and linking with other attackers. Great first touch, great range of passing for a striker, suprisingly good in the air. Loves to drop in and make things happen. Great balance too, makes him really hard to knock off the ball. His work ethic/pressing off the ball is also very good. We always looked a better footballing side with Maguire in the team. If you can look past his goal return and pair him with a genuine goal threat (something we've rarely had as a side) he will be excellent. Hope you lot can get the best out of him

Sounds like an attempt at filling the O’Hare void

He’s done fuck all so far get rid

All joking aside though. I struggle to understand the instant negative reactions. Football is meant to be a laugh isn’t it? Life is shite enough already.
Indeed, which is why we've signed 2 players today solely based on our Twitter admin's Irish flag jape...

Sounds like the type of player to take some of the running of Vik keeping him more fresh and at this point I'd take that. Look forward to seeing what he's got at a fresh club.

Sounds positive. This sounds exactly the type of player Waghorn was intended to be, I think, and it was working in the early stages with us.

You can’t purely go on stats I assume is the point. And it’s valid.

Regardless of how this signing ends up turning out.

Although lack of goals for a striker are way more of a valid concern than O’Hares stats.

O'Hare is a pretty unique example and one of the few players you would have in the team who can't score goals, because the rest of his game is generally outstanding.

The rest of our squad is completely dry though, and runs bare on goals throughout. You can't ignore those stats, like you can't ignore those of Palmer, or Maguire before they signed. On that basis it seems this acquisition is quite desperate on paper, particularly when you factor in the injuries.

It might not hold true in this case of course, there's always exceptions, and I hope that happens. I do think, however, some people are so desperate for signings they are being a bit in denial about the transfer business.

I wouldn’t say it was desperate at all, we need other striker options at the moment we only have Vik with Godden on the mend that will give us three with McGuire got a feeling Walker might be off, get Paterson in too we can suddenly look potent in front of goal and options how we play and not forked out too much dosh.

Waterford's chairman, John O'Sullivan said of Maguire, "I'm a great fan of Lionel Messi at Barcelona. When I look at Seanie, he really reminds me of him."

Underwhelming signing but sounds like he could potentially offer something to the squad if he can get fit.

That good season he had at Preston is 5 or 6 years ago, so he's not the same player and sounds like he's been ragged by injuries since then.

Worrying signing really.

I reckon hes the Callum replacement.

6 months for a start.

Just seems like hes going to be playing the 10 and alternating with Palmer for me

Cant hit a cows arse with a shovel in front of goal though so if hes signed as a strike option id be worried. Dont think so as we have Godden and Walker back

From my Cork/Waterford based scout…

“He had a stunning season or two for City and most of us had him an absolute cert to succeed. For whatever reasons Preston hasn't worked. A great work ethic and will certainly buzz around up top for ye. Hopefully pushes on now”.

We are crying out for players that can score goals, so finding out our new striker is 'atrocious in front of goal' sounds about right.

Playing the moral high ground by shouting 'give him a chance' is fair enough, but I think looking at his stats and the consistency of what other fans at his previous club have said, I am not expecting anything particularly special. Good luck to him though, hope he does impress.

No players are out there that can guarantee goals on our budget. You have to take chances on people. Not sure McGuire is one I would have gambled on. But looks like he needs a break and he has six months to prove he can take it. Of course it is not all about goals. Assists, making space for others, passing ability, delivery into the box,
Is he good in air, is he good defending set piece?

He is just one part of the jigsaw. One of us until end of season so lets support him. He will need a few games.

If he’s another attacking midfielder / play just behind Vik he at least gives us options.

We could actually do with another DM to play alongside Sheaf, or, if desperate put Kelly there as a sub second half.

Put Gus RWB (his original position). I think he could do well whipping the ball into the box from out wide.

Gus can play there, but wasted in that posistion for us has too much ability. He needs a free role in midfield. Defend when he has too push forward more attacking when we can. He is intelligent enough as a footballer to be midfield general and know what to do when.

Let’s give him a chance. He has history of playing well at this level, who’s to say MR/AV aren’t the people to get him back to that level.

Also, strikers being judged purely on goals is dinosaur. We have Gyokeres for that, it’s clear we’re lacking intent behind him since COHs injury. The attributes mentioned by the PNE fans sounds like they’ll compliment Vik well.

You mentioned on another thread that you'd heard some names mentioned we had a strong interest in @Great_Expectations. Presumably we've missed a few targets?

Decent signing in my opinion ,good with both feet and very good close control, will be a good decoy for Vik, he'll be on a decent wage (but within the general wage many of our squad earn).

The excuses on here for non-goal scoring players is getting silly. Like some sort of Stockholm Syndrome because we've got so many of them.

We need players that can put the ball in the net. Personally I don't have a lot of tolerance for anything else, especially when we are 19th for goals scored in the division.

I agree. And I’ll take your O’Hare admission as a long term internet points win. Wink etc

Pretty sure that was the original point being made as well.

Fuck sake, even Jody Jones has had more minutes than this clown.
Looks like King is recruiting for league 1.

At least Maguire has gone through puberty which is more than can be said for our other loans.

He is an ideal signing in our present position, championship experience, 6 month contract puts him in the shop window for us and him, not spent large amount of dosh on him, I suspect we have taken over his PNE contract, seems he can play along the front line so could hopefully link up well with Vik. But let’s not forget the MR factor if a better option turns up in the summer and is affordable Robins won’t hesitate to bring him in, he’s proved over the years he has little sympathy and will do whatever to in his opinion improve the team or squad and possibly we still have room and a bit of loot for another newbie, we will see Tuesday.
