Thought JWE did very well when moved to wingback.
Some very good performances throughout. Agree that Vik was motm.

Couple of decent saves in there, good distribution, great shithousery - shame we didn’t get a clean sheet. Getting better all the time.

McNally 7

Decent clearing and marking, some poor passing, skied a decent chance from a corner. Defence much better with him in it.

Fadz 8

Commands that back line. Solid. Without him we are half the team.

Doyle 6

Just a bit off of it today but a couple of clever through balls and passes.

Not-on Coffee 6

Someone very succinctly pointed out that he looked like he didn’t know what he was going to do next. Ungainly but so strong and has explosive power over a yard which means he can awkwardly keep or win the ball. Great athlete, but so slow to track back. Needs a rocket on that one.

Bidwell 7

Bidwell did well. Kept his line, got forward, no one scored against us with him on the pitch.

Hamer 8

Would have been 9 had he not done madness at the end. Nonetheless brilliant play, interceptions, tackling, passing.

Eccles 6

Shaky start IMO but got better. Great sliding tackle at one point. Not bad.

Palmer 8

Was brilliant until he got injured. Great first touch control and even better second touch that gets him away from markers. We are going to miss him.

Allen 7

Found himself unmarked in the box and kicked it towards goal. Scored. Elated. Ran around a lot and pressed down well. Scoring today isn’t a “gotcha” moment against those who say he’s not quite up to this level.

Gyok 8

Total menace. Got kicked all over, scored and an assist a a few shots that worried crows. Defenders must have nightmares about him. MOTM.

Wilson-headband. 5

Asked the play as an attacking midfielder and looked clueless as to what to do. Moved to LWB and looked better but was at fault for their goal.

Godden 7

Good assist. That’s about it.

Rose ?

Can’t remember him doing much

Robins 7

If your player says he needs to come off with a pull, get him off - ice him up; don’t send him back out to make the injury worse.

And at 2-0 in extra time just eat up minutes by having another couple of substitute interventions; Maguire for Gyok to pack midfield or for the booked Eccles. Maybe Dabo for Not-on Planet.

Was Palmer really brilliant today? He was terrible in possession, completed just 2 passes for every 5 he attempted, had the ball in great positions twice in the first 5 minutes, dribbled it out of play when he loads of options for the first and the second chose the wrong option and played a poor ball after waiting too long. He then had that awful freekick where he passed it to BNC with 2 men on him when everyone was in the box waiting for it, and that Corner he smacked at Hamer 35 yards from goals at shoulder height was awful. He was constantly beaten to the ball. He had a couple of good moments, the nutmeg and shot from 30 yards which was way over being one of them. I thought he worked really hard today but he was much better out of possession than in it, and was nowhere near Brilliant.

That free kick to BNC was a bit wasted, maybe it’s a training ground move but yes, to BNC? Really? - I’ll agree with you there.

I liked his attitude and his tackling and pressing from an attacking position. Was playing with confidence and looked a team player. Some great turns and runs and looked on his toes. I thought he deserved an 8.

Not sure he was MOTM. But he has a good game and no one really stood out.

He did have a really good game didn’t he?

Good: Big Vik, Hamer (MotM despite last minute howler - as others have said, Bidwell would have closed that chance down) BNC, Eccles, Palmer, MacFadz and Bidwell

Average: Doyle and McNally, Wilson (will he ever come for a corner like the Sunderland goalie did). Godden - good pass for Vik tho.

Meh: Allen (headless chicken in 1st half, bit better second). Wilson-Esbrand clearly in wrong position at first substitution.

Palmer was dominant force in the midfield and we lost energy and creativity with his injury. He was the 'go to' player for Hamer, Eccles and Allen.

Wish Hamer's volley in 1st half had gone in....

A really good game to watch - these are two top half teams. High quality first touches and passing. City belong where they are, it is not a fluke. The passing to Godden and then by him for the second goal was top quality

Agree with some of that but harsh on McNally and very harsh on Allen who did play well today.

Sunderland are a good team, and I think we did really well. There were some spells of excellent football, almost at the level of the QPR game pre World Cup and against a better team.

Wilson 7 A sub-standard keeper but made a couple of smart saves

Norton-Cuffy 7 Very raw, but clearly has some attributes and worked hard
McNally 7 Immense in the first half, switched off as the game ended
McFadzean 7 Did the usual, he’s massive for us
Doyle 7 Made one of the best passes I’ve ever seen from CB in the first half; sky’s the limit for this kid
Bidwell 6 Didn’t feature much but solid defensively

Eccles 6 Appreciated the energy, and he has big potential, but was erratic today
Hamer 8 MOTM A joy to watch…looked like the most talented player on the pitch
Allen 7 - A passenger for much of the first half but his work rate and goalscoring runs are invaluable
Palmer 7 - Odd performance, mostly notable for showy sliding tackles…I enjoyed it but it’s weird

Gyokeres 8 Miraculously he gets better and better every week

Wilson-Esbrand 5 Very odd substitution, he looked totally lost at AM
Godden 7 Yet again showed his ability to make his few touches count
Rose 5 The gap between him and, say, McNally was painfully obvious

Agree with that but would probably give JWE 6. Okay he probably could have pressed out more and quicker for their goal? But he did some reasonable stuff too. I think he is a decent prospect and needs to believe in himself a bit more. I think he is trying to play too safe and needs to open up a bit and take it to the opposition.

Wilson 7 - one very smart stop low down to his left, one dodgy fumble. Could do nothing for goal.
McNally 8 - had to cover Norton-Cuffy quite a lot, and did that well, solid.
McFadzean 7 - solid.
Doyle 6 - think last season Sunderland's main complaint was he faded from playing too much for his age, and can't help but think something similar is happening with us. He just looked a bit slower of thought compared to his partners - jaded
Norton-Cuffy 6 - first half especially was all over the place defensively, needing cover and looking Sunderland's best chance of something as he gave needless fouls away near the box. Improved second half.
Bidwell 7 - solid as ever
Eccles 6 - didn't notice him, my fault or his? So six may or may not be harsh!
Hamer 7 - a bit scattergun, but needed his energy. One lovely volley out the air that could have been spectacular if slightly lower.
Allen 8 - his usual performance tbh(!) +1 for goal. One lovely cross that led to Hamer volley.
Palmer 7 - wasn't sure whether six or seven. All action, some nice touches, but missed Allen free at one point, and a terrible shot. A win makes the glass half full rather than empty.
Gyokeres 8 - usual performance, with a goal for good measure. Also assisted rather than trying to take on the world, which is progress!

Subs
JWE 5 - wrong position wouldn't help him
Godden 7 - quite sharp, excellent assist
Rose 6 - another I didn't notice... bar one terrible pass!
