Was thinking earlier this week. The club don't seem to do anything to reach out to lapsed fans.

I haven't been all season (and most of last season) and had a season ticket last year (which I used twice) Would be a good idea to target them with targetted marketing offers. Must be a fair few to go after.

How come you haven't been as much this year without asking personally?

Play off chasing team, we should be selling tickets like hot cakes at 25 quid a pop.
I appreciate there are people for whom money is tight, but equally they'll be plenty sat in some boozer with an illegal stream on tanning pints and chisel.

Of course they're quite entitled to do that, but let's not pretend our support is anything other than below average at best.

Couldn’t agree more. The fact that we can’t get 20,000 home fans to attend on a regular basis in the top half of the Championship us awful. The apathy around the city of Coventry towards the football club is shocking - but just watch if we still have a chance to get in the playoffs in mid April, every man and his dog will be claiming life long allegiance in the hope of getting tickets for the play offs (although to be fair I thought the same thing for the home Notts County playoff game, when there was less than 20k there in total).

I have followed this club for the best part of 50 years and I traveled away regularly for 20 odd years when I was younger. Our current away support has been incredible, probably for the last 10 years, but in the late 70s/ early 1980s there were occasions when there were less than a hundred of us.

To me Coventry is not a football city like other one club cities such as Newcastle, Sunderland or Leeds. Even Derby get bigger gates than us. I often wonder what % of our attendance actually live in the city currently.

Truthfully, because I spent most weekends at the game post Covid and ended up hammered getting in at all hours. Spent the last year training so it was getting in the way of my goals in a nutshell! That and I work away a fair bit...

Those teams were better supported than us long before Northampton happened.
And they've had a lot of shit to deal with, not as much as us, granted, but they've had their fair share.

Coventry is very much a football city and has amongst the most dedicated and passionate supporters in this league. We witness that week in week out. Simply wouldn't swap our support for that of any other club tbh.

The numbers frustrate at times, but then we've sold a record number of STs this season, so it's hardly that we're not responding.

Problem is, people grossly overstate the size of the city and the extent of our pull. Comparisons with Leeds are mad, it is huge, bigger than Liverpool and Manchester. So too Newcastle, it's metro area is enormous in comparison. Coventry has an urban area population similar to Newport, Reading, Birkenhead and Preston. There is a wider catchment area of course (same applies to those other places too), but our pull there is minimal, there are just so many clubs in the area.

We have top 10 gates in the championship. Shouldn't be crying about that.

A lot of my mates support Liverpool, United, or the other big teams in the Prem. We're all in our forties. I've taken most of them up on the boys ST when 17yr old is working or 10yr old has other plans (13yr old never misses a game!). Liverpool fan celebrated our 2nd goal against Sunderland like it was Mo Salah scoring against Utd. 1st time he'd seen City live for 8 years. He couldn't believe the atmosphere. Loved it and is going to the Hull game. Another Liverpool is going too based on what he's heard.
I will never stop trying to talk them coming up to the City...older they get, less time or want they have for travelling to their "so called" team!!!
My 2 older boys supported Utd up until 3 years ago....they're now City through and through! PUSB
Never give up on lapsed fans nor others who have Cov as their 2nd team. If we do hit playoffs, this year or next, encouraging them could mean additional fans for the foreseeable!

You're conflating 2 things here, the passion of those that attend, which is up there with the best, and actual attendances, which are average at best.

Where are the 40k Millwall fans who were at Wembley a few years ago? How could Oxford take 28K to Wembley and get 5000 the next week? Cardiff get lower gates than us but would take 40K to Wembley in a heartbeat. I'm not sure what your point is.

We're getting around 18.5k each week (6k of which are non season ticket holders). That will not be the same 6k each game. Some people might only go to every third game. Those are still regular supporters.
When there is a big game they all want to go to that one game, which would bump it up to around 30k. They are still regular supporters, just ones that can't always make it to the same game.

As for 1987, in the 1986-87 season we were the 14th best supported team in the First Division, and in 1987-88 season we were the 11th best supported team in the division. For comparison that would be like averaging 31k and 36k in the Premier League today

Second paragraph is absolutely spot on.

Football truly grew in the years after we were relegated from the PL. Most clubs extended or moved to new grounds.

We are the only club I can think of that had zero success following a move from a stadium. Had we moved to the Ricoh in 1997, or been promoted in 2007, we would have comfortably sold out the stadium in the top flight.

We were the 15th highest in 2000. Higher than Leicester and Southampton who have sold 32,000 every week for 10 years. Not too far behind West Ham either. They now get 62,000.

We royally fucked up the last 20 years. Everything about the Ricoh move went wrong. No other club went through what we did. The past two seasons are the first time we've had an opportunity to grow as a club since 2005. The big difference is that there's positivity, people actively trying to make the matchay experience better.

I maintain that a couple years in the top flight would be revolutionary for the club. It gets 26,000 people with season tickets who get into the habit of going up to CV6 every week. Habit and routine is vital. Look at the year following Northampton. The crowds were shocking because people found other things to do.

However, if you can go financially etc, I cannot understand how you could miss Saturday. Best side in 20 years, a decent matchday experience and one of the best atmospheres in the league.

I've always recognised this, Ive got lots of mates who do this, but if ever there was a time to make a bit of extra effort, nows the time.

We need to get a result at Middlesboro on the last day and suddenly a trip to the North east on a Sunday will be no problem and I'll be inundated with texts about spare tickets

I always said if we'd had the same history as Leicester over the last 30 years our crowds would be the same as theirs.
Our crowds were pretty similar for years but the yo yo years they had seemed to ignite something, I'm not sure now that would happen here.

We have been out of the top flight for 22 years now-that’s a whole generation that has only known us doing mostly crap in the bottom 3 tiers, and a big chunk of that was spent alienating fans in League 1 and 2.

I think for that context, we get a good core support. What’s encouraging especially now is how many little ones are in the crowd now and getting hooked on CCFC-we’re making fans for life there and they won’t go away in later years. Then there’s others like Mrs BSB who move into the area and get attached to the club.
