Wilson 7

Clean sheet. One great save but some distribution poor. Little to do

Not-on Coffee 7

Seemed to be the go-to outlet but a totally mixed bag. Some great play, some errors and easy turnovers. Maybe should have been subbed off for extra energy on the pitch and to save his for Wednesday.

McNally 7

Did his job. Can’t think of any errors.

Fadz 7

Silly fouls here and there but otherwise solid.

Doyle 6

Some poor passing and pass selection.

Bidwell 7

Got forward well and some dangerous crosses. Not incisive enough for me.

Kelly 8

Watch his zonal positioning. Always where he should be and did the simple things well.

Eccles 7

Saw some good play but also some bad play. Surely Sheaf offers more?

Gus 7

Everywhere on the pitch but lacked support and passing options.

Gyok 6

Shackled and frustrated.

Godden 2

What was that display all about? 2 sounds ridiculous but did he win a dual? Make a decent run with the ball? Make a decent pass? Jump for a ball other than 5 seconds too early and flail like a broken kite? So how can he be marked higher?

Subs

Allen 6

Added pressing. That’s all.

MR 5

10 for getting us here but that set up was patently wrong for the first 30 mins and allowed Boro to just game plan a shut out. We play again in 3 days yet kept most of his players on the pitch. Surely rest Kelly for Sheaf for the final 20 and get Godden off after 55. Maybe Dabo for BNC etc.

Wilson 8 (great save. Kicking meh)
Norton-Cuffy 7 (looked threatening 1st half. Tailed off a bit. Think Dabo should have come for last 20)
McNally 8 (pretty solid all round)
McFadzean 7
Doyle 7 (some lovely passes but some sloppy ones)
Bidwell 7 (pretty solid and more of an outlet second half)
Eccles 5 (thought he was lethargic. Surprised he came out second half)
Kelly 8 motm (was everywhere again. Positionally superb and showed more intensity than anyone else)
Hamer 7 (some great defensive work but tried to force it in the second and his passing was off)
Godden 4 (just didn't offer anything. Don't think he won a header. Looked slow to the ball. Should have been taken off to change shape imo)
Gyokeres 5 (didn't offer much. His touch was not what is usually. Passing not great either)

Allen 6 (pressed well)

Hopefully we play Gyokeres on his own up top on Wednesday with Sheaf and Allen starting.

Not sure what people wanted Godden to do really differently…I agree he was totally ineffective but not really sure what job he was given to do, that’s the managers call and he was a waste of a body in that setup.

Mcnair had gyokeres in his pocket all evening. Ref was shit but still, they just nullified us.

Wilson couple of key saves

yeah he was totally ineffective but in his defence I can remember about two passes to his feet. Zero service (same for Vik).

8 Wilson MOM. 7 across the back five save for Doyle who had a few nightmares so a 6. 7 Gus and Kelly. 6 the rest.

Yeah we wanted to take an advantage up north but don’t let your disappointment cloud the fact that Wilson and the defence were fucking brilliant today.

Hamer stood out too but their extra man in midfield stopped our transition game and we were left with long hopeful balls to Vic.

Got to go with the box on Wednesday imo

Godden not involved at all but there for his ability to score important goals. Worked hard but game didn’t suit him at all.

In a way im really pleased with the result. Borough will have to come out and play at home, urged on by their crowd, we play better on the break and also have to go for it. If we went there 1.0 up we'd have sat back and invited them on, which would have been suicidal. We've seen we can take the game to them up there, so we've got nothing to fear.

Don’t get the Eccles hate. Thought he was combative and did well in there.

Fadz was superb and an 8 minimum in my opinion.

I think people are marking Hamer against his own ridiculous standards. Just because he wasn’t a 10 today doesn’t mean he wasn’t still brilliant - he was. So many interceptions, so much energy and a few times he got us out of trouble with some clever balls (the one to BNC when down a dead end was unreal awareness).

Kelly’s positioning is just brilliant and kept us ticking.

I love Godden but he had a thankless task which he understandably couldn’t do anything with. I do think we’d be better packing the midfield and having Gyok up there on his own.

Don't know if people noticed, haven't read much of the thread, but when Allen came on, instead of two sitting, it was Kelly staying deep, we pinned them back, played a higher line. Genuinely think Robins has spotted a tweak or two that will see that second half performance repeated on Wed night. I think we'll do it. Have to make a few better chances but I'm feeling good about the 2nd leg.

Edit: and Hamer was immense first half. Carried us. Saw a mark of 6 for him which is insane.

When there's 2/3 players on Vik, the additional strikers needs to be effective.

Eccles looked knackered tbf and the front two just didn't work. Not for lack of effort, but not a partnership. Only 1 should start so has to be Vik I think with Matty to come on late. Box with Sheaf and Allen in.

Hamer was everywhere and clear motm, back 5 and keeper did their jobs, some if Doyles long range passing excellent.

His crosses were decent. Bidwell's seemed focused low. No variation. BNC was at least a seven today. Seems better each game.

He’s just a loose cannon. Even oggy said he’s just frustrating and poor end product . Bidwell had one of his best games for a while. He had to work overtime in tbe first half to keep them at bay and got into good positions moving forward

Hear you, but I think we've settled for the current set up with the injuries and I'd be really surprised to see a change. Don't think Eccles deserves to start, though. I'm sure he did some dirty work that gets missed but I won't be shocked if Allen's starts instead.

We pressed far better as the game went on. We controlled a majority of the second half without managing to create any clear chances but that was as much down to a solid defensive performance by Boro (there were periods when they had eight men in their final third). If we play like we did second half with a bit more composure/rub of the green we’re in with a shout

I was thinking what we really could do with is an equivalent to Bidwell on the right.

There’s no Eccles hate at all - just a view he’s lacking in what we need at this stage of the season

Goddens task is hardly thankless - it’s just mystifying why he’s playing, his role i assume is to support Gyokeres and move defenders away from him which he fails to do

I thought everyone played ok in a very tactical game.

Kelly was my mom, everywhere and always available.
Hamer got some of his passes wrong but worked his socks off and looked most likely to undo them.
Norton Cuffy really kept Giles quiet and Middlesbrough like to attack through him.
I think Eccles was playing to orders.
Godden worked hard in the press and actually forced their defenders into several errors but didn't offer us much in possession.
Gyokeres was very quiet and shackled by them like at their place (due a stormer now).

Wilson 7 A brilliant save and some, uh, interesting kicking

Norton-Cuffy 7 One of his better games for us, always available even if he didn’t get much traction
McNally 7 Dependable with some good passing range
McFadzean 7 Calm and assured
Doyle 7 MOTM candidate in the first half, went a bit haywire early in the second
Bidwell 7 We looked better the more he was involved

Kelly 7 Gave us the physical presence we needed in midfield
Eccles 6 Game seemed to pass him by at times
Hamer 8 MOTM Must have won the ball back almost 10 times in that game. Seems the most likely to win us the tie.

Gyokeres 7 No service at all in the first half, looked dangerous in the second
Godden 5 Looked knackered and was generally ineffective

Allen 6 Plenty of industry but not much impact on the game
