The criticism of Godden is ridiculous. Still you lot have to have a target

Mentions for Wilson/Fadz/Doyle/Kelly and Hamer in what was a tactical chess match.
Eccles/Godden out on Wednesday for Sheaf and/or Allen.

It’s not ridiculous. I like Godden. Best finisher at the club. The reality is he can’t run in behind, doesn’t hold the ball up, and doesn’t link up with Vik. Teams are putting 2 on Vik as they know Godden can’t hurt them outside the box.

he’s a striker that relies on service and our wing backs final ball isn’t good enough too often.

Eccles and Norton Cuffy embarrassing. Never want to see either in a sky blue shirt again.

Hamer was the only one playing first half, shite second half.

Sheaf has to start Wednesday

There’s no Eccles hate at all - just a view he’s lacking in what we need at this stage of the season

Goddens task is hardly thankless - it’s just mystifying why he’s playing, his role i assume is to support Gyokeres and move defenders away from him which he fails to do

“I never want to see him in a Coventry shirt again” isnt exactly a glowing endorsement.

As for Godden, he spent the day having to press as though he’s Callum O’Hare and win balls in the air as though he’s a target man (which he didn’t do well, understandably). His game is based on sitting on the last defender, being slipped in behind with clever movement - he shouldn’t be chasing wingers and playing as a 10 but he’s doing an unselfish and imo thankless job. I think he received about 2/3 passes all game. The 5’s and 6’s ratings are completely fair but I don’t think he had the chance to get any higher than that today given the service and positions he had to drop to.

Even when godden had his one chance in the box he had poor first touch and couldn’t execute

I love Godden but he was poor today.

We desperately lack good delivery from wing back on both flanks.

Thought MR got the tactics spot on today as going toe to toe with them would’ve been asking for trouble.

Nullified their threat well. But we rely on quality in those moments when we turn the ball over and unfortunately that eluded us today but when you’ve got some of your best players out and you’re effectively relying on the quality of two individuals it’s always long odds.

Also boro came to do a job on us defensively today and did it very successfully.

Godden had next to no service, and some of our play out from defence was shocking, with simple passes going astray and some of the worst first touches I've seen all season.

For some reason, Hamer started the first half as a third defensive midfielder, and as a result we allowed Borough the freedom of midfield. If the plan was to draw them onto us and hit them with long balls to the front two it didn't work as the passes were shite and the Borough defence had the upper hand.

When we pressed them and looked to actually play football through the midfield, we started to get a foothold in the game.

Hopefully we've learnt from today, and we can cause some problems on Wednesday.

To be fair, my initial mark of “2” for Godden was an outlet of utter frustration.

As others have pointed out, he’s an out and out poacher who relies on service and through balls.

Today he looked like a competition winner who’d won the chance to play, totally ineffective in the role he was asked to do.

He did manage to peel himself into some clever positions in the box but the pass never arrived.

Vik is such an a unique striker it may be difficult to adapt to playing with him. Where’s he going next? Left channel? right channel? Into the box and pull back? Run and hit? Vik isn’t a target man who knocks balls down for a Godden type to nip on to.

Godden, IMO, did better when Cal was charging towards the D and pulling defenders away and slipping passes through. Palmer similarly.

Hamer can do that but is more prone to shoot or run in.

This begs the question, are we better playing an extra midfielder rather than have Godden playing in a role he can’t do? Godden can’t outmuscle or outpace or time a header for petals; it’s not his game.

His performance today didn’t merit a high mark, but it’s not 100% his fault.

Way too much negativity. Hamer best player on the pitch followed by their number 8. Wilson did well to put his body on the line when he needed to. No real bad performers against a very good side.

Concerns quoted by MR about Hamer’s knee. For me he was our best player today, he seemed to be everywhere in the first half, but tired in the 2nd half. Really hope he’ll be fit for Wednesday, we need him badly

crazy mark for BNC
Yeah you're probably right, I'll bump him to a 6. Although i would say it is less crazy than the 8s he has had off a couple of posters.

I thought he was poor until the last 15 minutes, it was only then did he look to take on Giles. The few times he got it in the first half and early in the second half, he looked to cut inside and then was easily out muscled. He did a good job positionally keeping Giles back, and was tidy in possession, but mainly playing safe - he had a 96% pass completion rate today. I think most people just remember the last 10 minutes of him driving forwards.

But the question you have to ask yourself is what service does he require now? He used to be able to latch on to balls in behind, run on and finish, win headers, hold the ball up and of course be a reliable finisher. Now he can do non of the above other than finish and because of his other limitations it has to be put on a plate for him. He looks like he’s towing a trailer all game, yes he attempts to close, but when he gets there he can neither tackle, intercept or really trouble the defender dynamically. I love him and what he’s done for this club, can score the odd goal, but I think he’s mostly ineffective at this level now.

Wilson - 7 Couple of good saves, and a typical performance we have come to see of him this season.
BNC - 6 Thought he did well up against Giles, drives forward well but final product seems to lack.
Mcnally - 7 Dealt with Akpom and Archer well.
Fadz - 7 See above
Doyle -7 See above
Bidwell - 7 Again did well against Jones and ever dependable
Kelly - 6 Broke play up well but quality on the ball lacked.
Eccles - 5 Been a good asset this season but struggled today
Hamer - 6 Not his best game
Godden- 5 Struggled up front and first touch let him down, I'd drop him for Wednesday.
Gyo - 6 Sometimes tries to much, but you can understand why.

Subs:
Allen - 6 Good energy but didn't impact the game greatly.

Still the best finisher at the club, and a real handful for defenders. Sometimes struggles to find his role when Vik is taking up the positions he's been used to taking.

He's at his best when dragging defenders out of position, but he needs someone like O'hare or Palmer to carry the ball forward.
Today he suffered as Hamer was way too deep, and as I said above, the service was shite.

Stu is a fucking idiot when it comes to certain players. He just decides he hates them(for what reason I do not know) and then believes they play poor week in week out no matter how much others disagree
Only Eccles and Godden who started played worse than BNC according to WhoScored. They must 'hate' him too.

He’s just a loose cannon. Even oggy said he’s just frustrating and poor end product . Bidwell had one of his best games for a while. He had to work overtime in tbe first half to keep them at bay and got into good positions moving forward

Bidwell was getting slated by neutrals on twitter.

Middlesbrough didn't give a toss about Godden today. All focus on Vik. It was a great example of how some games we are crying out for O'Hare or Palmer.

Godden is better when Vik doesn't play, but as Vik is the better of the two, MG should be benched imo. Both look more threatening with the extra man in midfield creating. Ideally if all were fit I'd like to see Hamer and Sheaf behind OHare and Palmer with 1 up top, but two are out, one is just returning from injury and the next one for that midfield box in Allen is slowly getting match fit, so we are where we are with limited options.

All 5s and 6s for players.
0 for the surfer flag. Wiped my arse on bigger bits. Ended up upside down as it surfed. Embarrassing!
