I wasn't a Northern Rock customer thankfully but he's not remembered fondly among those who were.
IIRC he was appointed after it crashed in the banking crisis and had been nationalised. Think he was brought in to put it back on an even keel. Not sure why he would be unpopular with customers, the crash, run on money etc all happened before his arrival.

Sure but he was responsible for sacking a whole load of staff and eventually waiving his fat bonus cheque under pressure, while the tax payer was gifted the toxic debt and the customers 'all' moved their mortgages.

This I think is part of the strategy towards a hostile takeover of the club, at some point that suits Ashley and co.

Gary Hoffman is a lifelong City fan. He goes home and away to most matches with his father and son and has done for decades. He’s a successful business man who would like to use his influence for the betterment of the club he loves. What’s wrong with that agenda ??

I don't doubt that he wants the club to do well. But don't be so naive to think that he doesn't hold his personal profile over what's best for the club.

Staff I could perhaps understand, but not customers. No doubt putting it on an even keel meant some tough decisions. The toxic debt though also happened before his arrival. He would have been at Barclays when the subprime mortgage crisis caught up with the banking sector. Don’t remember Barclays ever having a major issue with it, certainly not one so big that it had to bailed out and nationalised by the government.

Could be right on the latter part though. Only time will tell. As others have pointed out he is a lifelong fan so might not be bad news, doesn’t mean it will automatically be a good thing either mind. Hence my original post is meh.

Nothing but he’s got into bed with a number of people who’s agenda hasn’t been the betterment of the football club

I mean his several bogus takeover attempts should give you some semblance of an indication.
Where they bogus ? he was dealing or trying to with a very different sisu in those days. It all went over my head to be honest but once he and Elliott left we had Northampton, Birmingham, ground issues, players sold off, Wasps, no money, one of the lowest budgets in the championship relegation to the bottom division and staring non league.
People on here have selective memories.

Well Haskell didn't have the means to take over the club according to ACL's own preferred administrator, so that wasn't a great start. The offers to pay the rent weren't as clear as they seemed either.

Then we move onto later takeover attempts. Overson jumped from one consortium (that included Wasps ? My amnesia doesn't want to say that as absolute, nor the Dale Evans association)... and of course he got into bed with SISU at the start.

Plus he went round as a double act with Joe Elliot. Hoffman at least appears to have business sense, and was also wise enough to resign as vice chairman, to his credit. An Elliot endorsement is the kiss of death to any sign of credibility!

Anyway, I do believe Hoffman does have the right intentions towards the club, so hopefully him involved with the arena is positive... but let's wait and see.

Who wouldn't want a genuine City fan in an influential position on the board of an asset that we want as ours in the medium to long term?

Surely it depends on what his motives are doesn't it and who's side he's really on? Given who his employers are that should really give you an indication.

As long as Keys doesn't get involved who was regularly pushing for the Hoffman consortium. Would hate old hairy hands to have any involvement at all.

It was Adam Applegarth who got Northern Rock into the mess they were in. Gary Hoffman took on the poison chalice of trying to salvage what he could on behalf of the government who had nationalised it.
He also refused to accept his £700,000 leaving entitlement when he left.
