Not long ago, Jan 2011..

Surely there is a player in there somewhere ?

Liverpool primed for £5m Barton bid

Liverpool are ready to buy Preston’s Northern Ireland international midfield starlet Adam Barton as they build a squad for the future.
The Anfield club have been plotting raids on several youngsters in a bid to return to their old philosophy of grooming top young talent.
North End have been asking for £5million for the 19-year-old, but Liverpool hope to lower the price with add-ons.

The Kids got Silks as we saw against Birmingham. He just needs the right manager to give him a boot up the arse and get him playing like that week in, week out.

I think he proved against Bury and Brum that he's got it. Bit early to be singling him out, I think. Particularly when the whole team has been crap.

Really??

Sure he scored all 4 against Sunderland in League Cup game? Though a bit hazy about that myself now.

Must have got more than 5 for us though??

I thought that Barton looked the most "quality" of all our signings over the summer.

Hope he can show it a bit more often as the season progresses though.

Barton is a good player, he is clearly lacking fitness and as Torchy said, he is playing in a team that has been poor overall.

I rate the lad and think he will be good for us.

We've got enough players to be wary about, Barton isn't one of them, he'll end up being a good signing.

Barton's had some good games, he's just faded along with the rest of the team. Lacking a pre-season is an issue, and it's going to take some time for him to get into his stride after that nasty injury.

It's a bit early to write of the guy who has scored the best City goal at The Ricoh for about 3 seasons!

3 of which were alcoholics (and still are), two of which were never the same after injury. Lets hope Barton's neither!

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Barton dropped.

He has all the ability but as the Preston fans warned us, he is lazy and doesn't track back. Apparently the very case in point at Shrewsbury on Tuesday. We can't afford passengers and this seems to be in his make-up. I really don't think Robins will be as accommodating as Andy Thorn and I think he won't stand for players not pulling their weight.

Don't think this has anything to do with fitness as he was exactly the same at Preston, drifting out of games and failing to track back.

He's a great player to have when you are 4 nil up and coasting, but when you need players to roll up their sleeves and fight to get back into games it would appear that he's not the man.

Think five was lge goals.

Def scored 4 against Sunderland in cup, one in semi, and the winner in the 5-4 v forest

You also need good footballers, and he is potentially a very good footballer. He has good touch and technique. We don't want a team of cloggers-it's about getting a mix, getting the balance right.

Would you rather have Ginola or Telfer? And back at our level-would you rather have Fleck or Deegan?

Rooney, carrick, scholes, beckham, Xavi, iniesta, Messi, etc, etc are all good footballers but they also work dry hard for the team and do the dirty work.

Tbf I think deegan would have been ok at this level and it's far too soon to bigging up Fleck.

Yes of course there are lots of talented footballers who work hard as well. But at our level, talented ones that don't and hard-working ones with no talent are more common. They can still be winners. Look at Taarabt at QPR-one of the laziest but one of the most effective players before he got "found out" in the top flight.

Exactly, Stu.

You simply can't have someone who fails to track back. this is League One not the Premier League.

The bloke needs to work at least a little bit. No-one is asking him to go flying in with tackles and block shots etc. They just want him to stay with his marker and at least enable us to try and keep our shape.

Taarabt had a free role playing off the striker and was head and shoulders above any other player in the league and single handedly won games, and he affected every game in some way.

Maybe he hasn't got the fitness to do that yet? I've seen him tackle quite hard when he can catch up with the opposition..

Other than the goal scored he looks awful. Stu mentioning Thornton is interesting as Barton is similar but Thornton had more natural talent.

And he didn't work hard..he was discarded at Spurs-and dropped at times by QPR-because even with all that ability, he was too lazy.

But he had an abundance of talent at championship level. Comparing to Adam Barton is like comparing Rooney to McDonald.

Yes but Barton is nowhere near good enough quality wise to consider himself above doing the hard work as Taarabt was at QPR in the championship. CM is a position where you need to work hard regardless of quality anyway
