All's not well with City's shirt sponsors
According to the CT's Tina Junday, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union who work for club sponsors City Link are to stage a demonstration at Coventry City's home game with Carlisle United this afternoon.
Geoff Martin of the RMT Union said that workers had not had a pay rise in four years: "City Link are paying £1m to support Coventry City - its a bit much when our workers have not had a pay rise in four years.#
"It's annoying when we have City Link bosses living the high life while union members are struggling.
"Permanent staff also fear their jobs are under threat because they're being replaced with casual staff.*"Workers are angry - they feel under threat and under-valued.
"There is good reason to demonstrate during the the game when Coventry City players have City Link emblazoned on their shirts. It will give City fans the chance to learn more about City Link.
"It will be a chance to name and shame the company and to push for a good deal for our workers.
"By having a protest at a major football stadium, we hope, it will add pressure to the company to come up with a fair deal."*

Is it a god given right for a pay rise every year?

Bring out the coffin painted green and yellow!

They can fuck off. My company sponsor the club and about 200 people lost their jobs this year.

I have not had a pay rise for 3 years! :(

Funny thing sponsorship, not sure if the measures of success justify the outlay of 1m for such a company myself. Anyway as long as they buy a ticket for the game after the protest things will be fine.

Is this the same city link who knock your door and if you don't answer it in about 5 seconds they've buggered off with your parcel?

I get frustrated when people ask for pay rises or attempt to demand them.

When they first started work, they would have agreed a wage.

They forget that they wouldn't have a job if no money was spent on marketing and promotion as there'd be no company.

It's not that simple though, inflation, petrol prices, etc. have all gone up, yet their wages haven't meaning less money each week. People on minimum wage or just above are really struggling at the minute.

What a better way to get a pay rise than bringing bad publicity against the company, if it was my company I'd sack them at the first opportunity. Maybe they should get their head down and work hard in an attempt for a pay rise rather than just demanding? If they aren't getting paid enough to survive then look for a new job.

I don't get paid as much as a brain surgeon, should I start a protest or should I get my head down and qualify as a brain surgeon?

I can never be asked to fight for pay rises if a company doesn't recognise my work as I think they should I move to another company that will...
Also city link in the 2nd 1/4 made an 18.5M loss on top of the 12.7M loss from the first 1/4...

Without knowing the details it's hard to say if they are correct in taking this action, If my company posted record profits then I'd want a slice of that for my hard work, but I agree that people shouldn't just ask for it because they suddenly decide they need a pay rise. Also it's fairly hard to find a job at the moment, especially for the low educated people.

Also i'm quite worried you're being allowed to perform brain surgery if you don't have the qualifications. ;)

well, if that's correct, then bollocks to the workers. Like I said earlier, I'm getting a healthy pay rise so i'm all good :p

This is just it. Without an annual inflation rise, people are effectively being paid less and less each year.

There seems to be more and more opposition to any form of workers protest at the moment. A 'this is the way it is, get on with it like the rest of us' sort of attitude.
I'd say, if you're not happy about something, let the folk at the top know about it by any means necessary. If something happens you don't like and everybody sits back and accepts it, all that does is send a message that you're happy to be walked over.

We should take a leaf out of the French's book. Not to such an extent that nothing ever gets done, but the English as a nation need to be more vocal with their criticism and more supportive of that criticism when it occurs.

It's the same City Link that claimed they'd delivered a monitor to me but didn't. Got another one sent, but no idea where the original one went.

If your company is making a loss and you get a pay rise they will make an even bigger loss. At some point efficiencies will need to be made and this could include job losses. Alternatively you could increase your market share by being more competitive and better marketing of your product, Your action today will make matters worse. Unfortunately if your product is disruptive I will go elsewhere,)

The company I work for made over 1B profit last year. We only got 2.5% We work for the shareholders. Times are hard at the moment. If you are not happy with your job then look for another one. Protesting won't get them anywhere. Will any of their customers go elsewhere because the workers want a payrise that would put the price of their services up? They would go elsewhere if they could get the same service cheaper.

Nice to see some solidarity on this thread.

After what happened in the banks and what we have learned about the way this country's top earners live (noses in the trough, chumminess with politicians and large-scale tax-avoidance) I'm surprised we're not all in the streets every other day.

It'll be the public sector's fault next.

It's not about solidarity, it's about reality. In this instance the company is loss making...they can't afford to increase salaries. Yes they sponsor CCfc, thats a contract they probably can't break and which may or may not bring in revenue. The public sector is the same. We don't have the money, we are hugely loss making (as a country) so we can't afford any increases in salary unless numbered are reduced or the business starts to grow again. This is unlikely to happen by increasing public sector salaries but by investing in things such as infrastructure projects.

In these difficult times people need to be realistic, the alternative is possibly no job at all. Like in any job if people aren't happy with their salary they have the right to look elsewhere.

By the way I'd have a different view if the company was hugely profit making, in which case the wealth and success should be shared.

Also sponsorship is more along the lines of advertisement they either need to sell more or cut their costs... hmmm wonder how they would cut their costs.
