What will our midfield look like next season if Hamer miraculously stays?

I'd like to see a box 4 with Sheaf, O'hare, and Palmer. Eccles and Allen for rotation. That leaves a single forward, whoever comes in would have to fill that role (assuming Vic goes).

Would it be reasonable to expect O'hare to come back into that system straight away? How long would it take for him to get up to speed, and would we risk slow start if he needs a few months to build match fitness.

Palmer fit to start the season, Cal hopefully be ready for when Palmer inevitably gets injured. Let's hope he comes back the same player. Need to invest or quality loans at CB x2, RB and striker assuming Vik leaves.

Not sure I've ever seen a player similar to Vik tbh.
If we're lucky we'll somebody of a similar standard, but they surely won't play the same way. He's a one-off, in good ways and bad.

Interesting question individually I rate them all highly plus COH but I think we need to add someone else and if we add a second striker as I hope we will and maintain the two wing backs that would leave three in midfield with Hamer imo number one, bit of a nice headache for Mark Robins.

That is an excellent midfield for the Championship. However, I don't think we will see O'Hare until January at the earliest and Palmer, based on previous experience, will also miss a good chunk of games with injuries. For that reason if we want to progress we need to buy another high quality attacking midfielder or loan one to cover for the period until O'Hare is fit.

Finding a forward to replace Gyokeres won't be easy and the reality is that they will probably be a very different type of player. That might impact on whether a box 4 midfield is the best formation.

We need a strong centre mid signing - Eccles has come on leaps and bounds but still young and can look fatigued when he plays a long run of games. Kelly & palmer will contribute but won’t play the whole season. Sheaf and hamer top quality but need another option to take the load off them.

I think if we keep Hamer the intention will be to build the team around him. I'd like to see two quick strikers similar to a Vik/Vardy type. Rapid on the break. We were really successful playing on the counter last season, and it's a simple tactic which other teams seem to struggle with.

Let’s see if Kelly chooses to accept the contract or not, we don’t know what they’ve offered him, it could be shit and he might leave. Otherwise it looks as though our centre mid isn’t really going to change at all

I concur that we won't be seeing COH for a while yet, but even if/when both he and Palmer are fit I can really see them only being played together against teams we expect to dominate possession against.

The better teams who will retain the ball I can see him going for the energy of Allen alongside O'Hare with Palmer making an impact off the bench. Not bad to have both of those as options, as well as having Eccles and possibly Kelly on the bench to shore us up defensively.

I like the box, but we need to make sure the attacking midfielders are closer to the lone striker. As for whoever plays that role, they will have to be physical enough to be competing and holding up play so the midfielders can provide support.

I'd actually agree (as an aside though is Palmer quick? I hadn't considered it before really) but that's where it's play according to the need isn't it. What Allen does do which none of the other midfielders seem to like to do is move beyond the striker, offer a player that the midfield and / or defence need to track, and it makes space not only for him, but his teammates and it allows one up front to be more than viable and fluid. Given Palmer's fitness issues this season it would arguably be better for him to be coming in for appropriate games (ones where teams sit back and need unpicking as one example) rather than be expected to play all the time and, ideally, the same applies for O'Hare and if we're playing effective meathead defenders, also fair on Allen rather than expect him to challenge for headers against brick shithouses!

I mean, it all depends on having everyone in the squad fit all of the time of course, which never happens, but I actually think we have a nice variety of midfielders who all bring something to the first team party, and all something a bit different to one another too.

And when we don't own a centre back or RWB of our own, and our main striker is likely off, midfield is the one area we can rely on, apart from 'only' replacing Hamer of course... but midfield still has more strength in depth than the other areas even if Hamer goes, that's how desperate we are elsewhere!

That formation would depend very heavily on who we recruit at CB. The three CB's give us a bit of cover if one makes a mistake.

Since he got sent off earlier this season Hamer has been incredible, arguably he was the one who dragged us into the play offs. He's really matured as a player and as a character on the pitch. If we manage to keep hold of him I'd feel really optimistic about our chances.

We won’t be changing formation any time soon. The formation we play is balanced and flexible, which allows MR to adapt a style of play to the needs of the team/game.

Playing variations of 5-3-2/3-4-1-2/3-4-2-1 does seem to be in fashion in English football as a whole. Wingers can be expensive as are forwards so for a team with a smaller budget, a system with wingbacks is ideal.

Besides, our success needs to be built on being a primarily solid defensive unit.
