Think McNally (granted older) was better than Doyle personally. I think Doyle will go on to be a better player though if you get me?

Scott Dann probably the last one for me. I am old enough to remember Babb, but young enough to not be able to remember how good he was!
Babb was class. I think started as LB but much better as CB? Had a brilliant World Cup. Very quick. At least was until...:

I was a big fan of Trevor Peake, I've never been a fan of nippers in that position. The way he read the game made up for is age. Very unlucky not to play for England I think.
He was superb, very consistent. Him and Kilcline were the best CB partnership I've seen at the club, complimented each other perfectly. I remember getting upset when Peake scored a rare goal but it was given as an OG-maybe on a muddy pitch v Newcastle?

Babb was good but he was also in a partnership. He did the headlining Kilcline stuff whilst the understated Peakey mopping up was done by Peter Atherton. Never thought Babb was as solid after we sold him. And Atherton sort of disappeared into the shadows as well.

Agreed, Atherton was also very very good. Went on to be mostly used in midfield or at RB by Wednesday and Bradford, which I could never understand!

If it's anything like the season tickets, we'll announce the signing of his legs first, his arms in a week, and his head will join in a month's time for a fee none of us are happy about.
Think it’s his neck that will take longest to unveil!

Babb came as a pretty big standard left -back. From the moment he converted to a ball playing centre half he was brilliant for us, and for the Republic of Ireland. Interestingly it wasn’t until after Ireland’s World Cup victory over Italy in 1994 that Jack Charlton felt he could trust him at centre half.

He then moved to Liverpool when he was solid rather than stand out and a couple of high profile errors meant he was often singled out as a weak link in their defence.

My memory of this time differs…

It was Atherton who did the donkey work, with Babb mopping everything else up. Atherstone was stolen off us by Trevor Francis.. He offered a very low price, and it went to a tribunal and they only upped it by a relatively small amount from his bid. He was worth a lot more.

Trevor Francis stole Atherstone? He'll be after Nuneaton next.

Babb was a Rolls Royce. Nearest we have had to Paul McGrath. Stuart Pearce as a FB just came from Non League and looked like he had been playing top flight all his life. But his style was Fred Flintstone. But totally effective.

Exactly this Babb did the tidying up.

Atherton had a solid career at Sheffield Wednesday and then Bradford in the top flight
