I will say what I said in another thread when people say we can't keep hold of our players when bigger teams come along


If we had a certain Jordan Rhodes, Nick Powell or Alex Oxlade Chamberlain at the club do you think our board an owners would have got 8, 4 and 12 million pounds respectively whilst keeping the players on board long enough to get promoted (Huddersfield, Crewe and Southampton were all promoted in each players final season playing key roles)

Or

Do you think they would have been sold at the first chance for 1-2 million before they have even managed to consistently hold down a first team spot in the Coventry team in a similar way to Gael Bigirimana was

My issue isn't that he was sold, it was that he was sold way to early. Same as Turner after his injury

FFS! Fans whinge (and I mean whinge) for years that we don't own a penny of our stadium and then when we seem to have cobbled together some pennies to own a stake on it, the owners are still castigated!

This isn't a SISU supporting post, but damned if you do, damned if you don't.

We're seemingly set to have control of 50% of the Arena and the revenues that come with it. If we have to sacrifice some talent to fund this, then that's the way it has to be. Some points to consider:

* Bigi didn't have to say yes.
* If an employer 10 times your current employers size comes along and says 'right, we'll treble your wages (and I'm guessing there) and give you a better career development plan...oh, and we'll give you some European experience', you would go, wouldn't you??
* Coventry, like the every other like club who isn't Man City or Chelsea will always sell their best players for different reasons. You think Man Utd wanted to lose Ronaldo? You think Crewe wanted to lose Nick Powell? Clubs like Utd, Liverpool, Spurs lose players because those players want to further themselves. Clubs like Crewe, Cov etc lose players for the same reason but also to survive.

I agree...it's pretty shit seeing our talented youth leave. But lets not slag easy targets off for something that's always happened at lower league clubs and might actually help with our finances long term.

Don't really understand what there is to be whining about here other than old news. Bigi was going to be sold sooner or later, we got a decent price, we shoved add-ons and future clauses into the deal, so it's hardly as though we could realistically refuse what was on offer.

Regardless, of more relevance now to Covebtry is, as I flagged up earlier, Bigi saying that at Newcastle the players train like their lives depends upon it.

I wasn't happy that Bigi was sold, and am convinced that he was sold for less than his (then) real value. The spivs that own us will sell anything for the first offer they receive.

However, Bigi has gone, and no amount of moaning will get him back.

What worries me is that at some point in our future, the owners/board have to say to themselves that we need to keep our promising youngsters in order to build a team with a real chance of progressing up the leagues. I am far from convinced that our owners/board have the will or skill to identify that point in time. I fear that they will just get into the habit of selling without thought of progress for the future.

Rhodes is in his early 20s, Oxlade-Chamberlain was clearly a very special prospect, and Powell is a goalscoring midfielder. All traits which make the transfer fees higher than they would for a 17 year old holding midfielder who wasn't exactly setting the world alight.

I think the real travesty is he's had to go to Newcastle to see players giving 100% in training.

Yea I know Gael wouldn't attract those amounts of money, I just think the club would have benefited more financially an on the pitch from keeping Bigi an allowing him to establish himself in the Coventry first team before he was sold.

I was sort of trying to compare the situations an not the players ability or value

What make you think the club had a choice.. very often people come on here & say the club should have done this that or the other with absolutely no information about the real circumstances surrounding the deal or the financial imperatives of running the club, e.g. selling Highfield Road to keep afloat was something that should never have been done, but it was.

It has often been alleged that big clubs to 'tap' up players or in the case of a very young player their parents..

At the end of the day I doubt the club sold at less than the going rate.. and one can only hope that the clauses they negotiated will bear fruit in the fullness of time.
