That sort of person often give themselves away for example by boasting about it to friends or sharing their experiences online. Also they might be arrested for an offence in this country and then questioned about trips abroad.
By the way there are additional charges for having sex with someone under the age of thirteen.

Was just trying to make the point that girls seem to be growing up a lot faster and wanting to be 'adults' a lot earlier and that is a concern.
As I said way back in the thread, if these two both truly do love each other and are sincere about the way they felt then he should have waited until she was 16, then left his job. It was down to him as the adult to take responsibility.

I'm not one to judge people's morals, but you only have to look at the figures for schoolgirl pregnancies. Hundreds and hundreds. Are all the fathers young lads? Probably not. You can go into any pub or nightclub and you will find under-age kids getting away with drinking. What the hell happens to them afterwards? Do they go home at 11pm? Do they heck as like! This gal may be only 15, but I believe she knew what she was doing. I don't condone what the teacher did, but sometimes I think it's all a bit one-sided.

Which is exactly my point too. I'm willing to say most these girls that fall pregnant come from broken homes where either the father or mother sits on the doll looking after their childern and only looking after their children. At a young impressionable age, that kind of things stick in your mind and becomes acceptable to them. I'm not just singling out girls when I say this. Young men can be just as bad. You see it on TV all the time. Kids get arrested, taken home or to the police station. The parents come along and it turns out they're just as bad. The saying like farther like son springs to mind..

I'm not talking about Megan. Just about the age of consent.
I'm just saying that teens mature at different rates mentally and physically. You may look like a adult, but mentally you could still be a child. You learn a lot from your parents while your growing up - knowingly or subconsciously. This is why I think 16 is the right age of consent. Normally, by that point, your meant to be mostly an adult and expected to act and shoulder the responsibilities like an adult too. The problem is of course, some parents don't shoulder responsibilities themselves and expect others to do everything for them because of some poor excuse. This is why I think you get so many problems with the youth nowadays. There learning from the wrong people.

I've been half following this story for a few days, and find the tone in the media quite irritating.
I was a teacher for about 20 years- mainly overseas- and agree with Tad above about differing maturity rates: some kids are sexually aware at 13, others aren't wired up when they get to 20. Megan's photos in the press seem to indicate the first group although looks can be misleading.
Age-of-consent laws differ geographically and historically: from 13 in Spain up to age of marriage in Saudi, and nothing in some countries. In the UK it has been as low as 10 in the 1500s, 12 in the 1200s: it's merely an arbitrary stab at what is currently acceptable- some of the pious pricks might remember there are no moral absolutes: why not 18? or 20?
Many instinctively feel "what if it was my daughter?" although your daughter may feel differently. With sons nobody gives a fuck- the earlier and the more you can get your leg over, the better. The fortunate few that manage a tryst with somebody older are the envy of all, and the women who oblige are to be commended rather than prosecuted, unless there is some form of manipulation in play. This runs counter to current PC notions of equality, but most will agree it's the truth.
That teacher comes across as a tool. The "position of trust" thing is important (although it seems teachers in parts of Africa have few qualms about hitting on students and regard it as a perk), it's part of the unspoken contract between teachers/pupils, and those men or women that dice with it will loose the respect of the kids, not be taken seriously, and find classes impossible to manage. They are on the way out. It simply isn't done.
Teaching in the UK isn't a bad job- it has a salary progression and a good pension at the end- all of which Megan's bloke has now forfeited. He will end up at Asda after he gets out of prison, assuming he isn't beaten to death by more self-righteous pricks inside. He could have waited, and in my opinion was probably a bit too young to be in the job- ages too close.
Just a few thoughts from an old hand. I've seen both men and women develop "attachments" to certain kids over the years- they're only human after all and meet thousands of kids over the years- some of whom are very charming, but 99.9% just let it drop- you have to.
Bear this in mind with Megan and "sir" before you lynch him. They're only human- but he held the reins and shouldn't have let it develop.
Oh yes- Otis: "It's worth giving up your job for the one you love". Women expect financial stability, so I won't be coming to you for relationship counselling.

Good post Harry. Interesting read, but not quite sure which side of the fence you sit on? It sounds to me as if you feel that the teacher was somehow not at fault? (Forgive me if I mis-interpreted your post.)

Not really blaming anybody. Humans are programmed to behave in this way, and unfortunately for this character his chosen one fell just the wrong side of the a of c dividing line.
He should have known, though. Teenagers can behave very randily, and any decent teacher should be prepared for this and not take it at face value.
It's quite entertaining to identify the different types: some girls have got "mother" written all over them, and you know that within a year or two of leaving school (maybe even before!) they're going to be pushing a pram- married or not.
Slightly off-topic, but that Megan's step-dad is really annoying me. He's not even her proper Dad. One wonders what kind of example has been set by the "parents".

I am a young teacher myself (both overseas and UK), and it is true that a lot of teenage girls can be very inappropriate to say the least! A funnier moment was when one girl played that James Blunt song, 'you're beautiful' on her phone for a few seconds then shouted out...'you're beautiful sir'...i just laughed, went bright red and thanked her (which the rest of the class enjoyed). As you say, a teacher has the reigns and should never let anything develop. Clearly he was not suitable for the profession but there is no way of telling this until it's too late.
As for your point about her real dad....i think he left the family just after she was born and apparently has shown himself again and now lives in Leicester.

Regardless of his feelings, he is a professional and knows the legislative framework that he is expected to operate within.
I have zero sympathy for him. I also have zero sympathy for her as well. She was well aware of the consequences of her actions and this relationship had clearly been developing for some time.
As a teacher, he has to accept that he is placed in a position of trust, legally he assumes the role of in loco parentis and if he is not able to fulfil these duties then he should find a new career.
Many of you appear to be discussing this issue as though there is some 'grey' area to debate. However, the law clearly states that it is black and white.
He knew this when he started his training for teaching and every school he was employed at would have reminded him of this with his Staff Code of Conduct guidelines.

I would like to see more questions asked as to why the school or police had no acted sooner, especially as it is alleged that they had known what was going on for quite some time. I hope they will also be held accountable.
Sadly I think this sort of thing is more common than people like to think, when I was younger I knew of a girl who was having a relationship with a youngish teacher at her school.

I went to an all boys school - Ullathorne during the mid-1960's. All male teachers! Bar Stewards they were too! They loved using the cane. I must've got the cane across my hands nearly every day at school!
