CCFC Museum? (3 Viewers)

I went to the Benfica museum last week and they like trophy cabinets. Lots of them. Their museum was on 2 or 3 levels. It did include some other sports from the area. Also lots of old kits and focus on key players past and present. Sometimes there is too much to take in and if you are not a supporter of the club then some of it not that interesting. The club shop at the end was good but no bigger than our new planned shop. IMG_1987.jpeg IMG_1988.jpeg IMG_1990.jpeg

We could have the bag of poo that was supposedly thrown at Sunderland fans so people can see it in person. Inspirational

In all seriousness it's quite a nice idea. I'm guessing the 87 bus is back in the transport museum?

Last few times I've been into town, there is a Police museum. Really random, and I've never seen it open

Making some space at the arena for an archive with programmes and newspapers, kit collection, a few key pieces, maybe move the bus up there too. Combine it with a few interactive things, a look behind the scenes, I’d go for a day out just for the hell of it.
I'll repeat, use the resources of the city archive. Villa etc tried having a dedicated archive and they had to make the staff redundant, so we'd have little chance.

Could do it as a Community Archive, and there is help out there in what to do if setting it up that way - start with the national group.

What about a Coventry Sports Museum?

Could have CCFC, Blaze, CRFC stuff, athletes from the city, local teams from days gone by, loads of interactive stuff. Reckon it could be quite popular if done right.

Yes, and the tennis balls thrown onto the pitch at the Ricoh. One tennis ball to signify each year of our history, from 1883 to the present day.

Here's another group open for advice, and their collections pages shows a range of what other groups do - from the vaguely professional to the scrap of paper in the corner.

Could also do something digitally. Either hook onto currently existing heritage websites (I know of one that would be happy, very happy, for a chat about how to do this and what to do ;)) or set up your own that allows contributions with a gatekeeping process -can either be done with currently existing expertise, or you buy an off-the-shelf from a dedicated company such as CommunitySItes, and their prices are actually quite cheap!

Would also be worth asking this lot for tips as well wrt funding etc. From Town To Town • Home

The project was actually pretty good considering the size of the club but, as often happens with lottery funded projects, sustainability wasn't really in the plan. That's something you need to overcome.

Want to capture stories to go with it? This lot will help you with some guidance and resources

Know what I’d love, talking about oral history? A database of chants. Would take someone to go and actually get the recordings, but I think it would be an amazing oral history project.

Different subject, but this kind of thing to host it

(There was actually a website that had clubs' chants back in the day, including... colourful ones :D)

On this I wonder if the best placed people wouldn’t be the CCFC media team who record pretty much every game anyway. I wonder how much archive footage they have? These days with AI it might be possible to chuck it all into something that looks for and extracts chants 🤔 Certainly a fun CS project for a Uni student if not.

Regardless I hope the club keeps as much raw footage as possible for this kind of project in the future. Digital archive capacity is so cheap.

Yeah but who does that?
Local authority archives, whose whole aim is to preserve things for perpetuity, so they don't just vanish / be inaccessible one day. They took a while to get going (local authority!) so are still very much in catch-up mode, but the basic principle is, the same as you can go and see and touch a charter from the 13th century, in a thousand years' time somebody will also be able to go and listen to some goon shouting shit on the villa. The battle atm is to get those with the budgets to acknowledge the need... as it's now taking, arguably, more of their resource to set up these tools and sites for preservation than printed artifacts.

I don’t foresee a future where AWS not only loses my stuff but disappears in a way that means I can’t get it first and repost. I appreciate you wouldn’t store the digital equivalent of the Magna Carta on it, but a recording of 500 pissed bloke singing “oh Callum Doyle it could have been you” isn’t the Magna Carta. And if there’s any hurdle that would stop the club getting on board it would be money.

Soeaking of money, they could take hosting donations or sell access. Sure a bunch of nerds would love the ability to go through the raw city unseen footage from 10 years ago.

This is something Exeter City did, which was mostly online. The Grecian archive has all the old programs, player details, and team photos, They had help with some grants. Quite good really.

I think this is certainly the right first step. Collect primary source stuff that’s 2D/video/audio digitally somewhere. Not sure how copyright works for things like match footage?

Imagine if you pulled together the collective geekery of: SBT, CCFC Twitter, Jim Brown, that Deano bloke with all the videos, the club itself, CWR, the Telegraph. I bet you could make something really special.

Then we train a multimodal LLM on it, and have a chatbot that can answer any CCFC question, as well as generate convincing CCFC footage that never happened. 🤤

Edit: but we fine tune the chat bot on Clive Eakin transcripts so it constantly gets names wrong, for the LOLz.

The point being, history is beyond just the Magna Carta, and it's the everyday history that colours the past. It's just as important in preservation sense for that to be preserved as anything else, or it ends up distorting the past for people coming to analyse it in the future. In the past, it'd be who could write that was the main reason we only have a snapshot of a certain area, but now there's little excuse for that other than the will to actually do it.

And cost is also why it's maybe worth the club talking to the local authority archive, to see if there is any possibility of partnership. They'll also have experience of applying to funding bodies for this kind of thing... and also the facility to store physical items whenever whatever the project it is, is completed, and also keep a digital copy for the time that they get their digital repository up and running.

There are a number of ways you can do this. If it's club led they'd be well advised to go down the path of talking to the professionals in those areas. If it's fan led, then it's well advised talking to people like the Nuneaton people (the Exeter one is a fine example - I've used them myself in the past ;)) etc.

But each comes with its own strengths... and limitations.

Would a first step not be to just grab some storage and start collecting/organising/normalising the stuff though? How long before you need archive standard?

I'd actually be writing the project first - talking to the various stakeholders about what would be possible with their involvement (or without! It might be that the response from some is very depressingly apathetic... or you might be surprised) and what they could offer in terms of help and resource - get your bids in to the Arts Council / Heritage Lottery / Local Coventry charities to fund it.

My experience says that you start off just doing it and sometimes that's great, and I can show you plenty of sites where that works in the end, don't get me wrong. Can also show you plenty of sites where it ends up a load of chaos to unravel and / or people run out of steam very quickly and it becomes all a bit half-arsed.

Sometimes it's best to actually define what you want to get out of it and how you'll do that.

But I don’t wanna write funding proposals, I wanna build stuff 😭

I've got a old duvet cover I'd like to donate , it could make a nice centre piece, although the back looks like a plaster's radio.

Things like this always work best with interactive stuff, so you could test how hard you can kick it, save penalties, shooting accuracy. Even stuff like running against a speed gun and how far can you do a throw-in.

On another note where someone mentioned about collecting the info of all the old players etc., I love this to happen and for it to be gturned into a Panini style sticker album. great way to get kids involved to start with and can be passed down from parent to child to carry on.

Is there? I wasn’t aware of that.
I think it was moved to the transport museum by the cup final bus
There’s a CCFC bit in the Herbert isn’t there?

Guess part of the issue is where to put it. We don’t own the stadium and it’s a bit out of the way for non-match day visitors

The Herbert still had a case with CCFC bits in June when I last popped in just a double sided display as part of the history of Coventry exhibition on the lower floor. Also had some speedway and Cov rugby bits too.
