Basically we’re going to have to inhale an extra 5 years of petrol and diesel fumes in our lifetimes, clearly promoting the continuing fall in life expectancy while making sure we’re a bigger burden on the NHS in the process for everything from respiratory illnesses to cancer. He’s cancelled a load of conspiracy theories that don’t exist, hence their conspiracy theories. Turned off at that point.

He’s pushing back the new ICE car ban? He knows Labour will put it back. Just silly politics that creates uncertainty for business. They really don’t give a fuck any more, it’s all riling up the base and leaving traps for Labour. Well ironically from what I see Boris Johnson sped up the move here and Europe and the Far East are 2035 - Japan definitely is - so it seems we are just falling back in line with the EU

I find once you realise that literally all policy from the govt from now until they finally give in to electoral gravity and go are just about pumping the base in the hopes of sticking around post GE and setting traps for Labour, it makes more sense. None of it is intended to be what’s best for the country.

All they care about is winning and if not this election the next one, so we get oil and gas licences that Labour can’t cancel or they’re unstable for business, and can’t keep because they’re bad environmentally. And that’s all that matters.

HS2, punt it all to Labour so you can moan about costs. Make a ridiculous decision on Euston that will almost certainly have to be overturned so you can claim Labour are wasting money.

Make up completely fictional economic forecasts so when Labour can’t meet them claim they’re overspending.

He’s talking about reforming the exam system! He’s as dead a duck as they come with a year of his premiership left at most. It’s just entirely unserious.

My plan would start by not literally making up the numbers to justify a vast white elephant that sucked the the juice out of every other potential project, and I'd take it from there.

Firstly carbon costs, I think George was being very pessimistic as to whether we decarbonise the electricity supply. Also not really the point.

Secondly the disbelief in fairly standard practice for calculating economic benefits of infrastructure.

Thirdly “don’t people travel enough?” No George, they don’t.

It’s just standard anti-growth guff TBH. We have a shameful transport system compared to our peers that’s the long and the short of it. And it drives up house prices and costs in productivity.

So unless you or George has a magic second option for solving the capacity issues on our Victorian network I’ll stick with the one we’re halfway through.

It should if the intention was ever to build a HS2 to the north. But it was intended to connect BHX to London and increase London's air passenger capacity. Though if it doesn't go into central London it's farce. When they proposed it and it didn't connect up to St Pancras and access to European HSR, then I wondered what the point was.

As for infrastructure spending in general, for me it should be used as a regeneration tool. As it is all the big infrastructure goes to the already successful places and just results in increases migration from deprived areas and needing money to sort of the increasing social problems in those areas with the double whammy of higher property and living costs in the areas that people move to so even those that try to get out get caught in the trap.

I'm amazed at how little joined-up thinking goes on in the corridors of power. Though I guess the 'joined-up' in that sentence may be redundant.
