Collins Celebration (5 Viewers)

He's still a young man. We tend to forget that football players don't live in the same world as the rest of us. All the way through school they are considered special because of their skills. They tend to leave at 16 and then carry on spending every day with young men in a unique situation - it's all very artificial and cannot help them to grow up or learn social skills/empathy.

We should cut them some slack.

COV Kid James Collins dedicated the equaliser that denied his beloved Sky Blues the full three points at Swindon to his best friend who died when he was hit by a train in the city last week.
The Swindon Town striker was berated by Coventry fans after ripping off his shirt to celebrate his 79th-minute leveller but he later revealed the heartache behind his joy.
I think the fans misread the situation and gave me a bit of stick, said the 21-year-old former Cardinal Wiseman schoolboy, who lived in the city with his parents until last summer when he left Shrewsbury to sign for flamboyant Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio.
My best friend from Cardinal Wiseman, Declan Callum, died last Thursday so I wanted to do well for him today and I dedicated the goal to him.

Dec was a Cov lad as well and he was due to be here for the game but unfortunately he was hit by a train near TGIs and passed away, so I was glad to do it for him.
Declan, of Minton Road, Potters Green, had taken the day off work to celebrate his birthday off-road biking with a group of friends on land near Brandon Woods when he was struck by a train travelling between Birmingham and London.
Collins, once a season-ticket holder at Highfield Road and on Citys Academy books as a teenager, added: I wouldnt say it was difficult for me to focus on the game because its my job. I was more full of excitement than anything, getting out there against my old team, and I think the result was fair in the end.
It was a great feeling for me personally to go on and get the equaliser against my boyhood club. Obviously I have always been a Cov supporter but the important thing was that we got back in the game and got level to 2-2 which, in the end, I thought we deserved

Goal scoring bonus, goal scoring against your old team bonus, draw bonus, not getting your kit dirty bonus, bowing to Paulo bonus, best prematch mixtape bonus, most club shirts with your name on sol this month bonus, breathing unaided bonus, doing your bootlaces up correctly bonus. All part of the job..... plus salary. ITS HIS JOB

I thought scoring goals was supposed to be a joy? Personally I did not even know who he was, pretty much like most of the players in this League. :)

Having said all the above, he's a :jerkit: anyway:claping hands:

Same here. First I heard of him was the day we were linked with him. Like all of the players we've signed this year for that matter (exc McGoldrick).

Jeez it's depressing being in this league.

I have respect for what Collins has said after the game.

The thing is he had been dropped, had a point to prove, and scored. He then celebrated accordingly.

Give him some slack, I wonder if anyone would have been so upset if he wasnt a Coventry fan, jeez is he wasnt playing he would probably be following us every week and i could only hope if so, he wouldnt have been on here bitching about someones goal celebration

...I'm actually quite enjoying it.....new grounds to visit...less day-tripping gift-shop hunting supporters....and you never know....we may even be able to compete in this division...

...I tell you what is depressing......70+ forum posts about a lads goal celebration......ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

It was just a question about would you celebrate against the club you love?

There is dedicating a goal to your mate and acting like you have won the world cup in front of the away fans.....

Why not have a t shirt with a picture of him and show it? I am pretty sure if he had a t shirt saying RIP he would have got an applause from all.

In fairness, he had RIP Dec embroidered onto his boots for this particular fixture.

Weird, when I'm at a football match I can't hear everything everyone says. Then again, I'm not from Krypton.

Bullshit.... considering i was 6 rows from the front i would have heard that eh. Bit of banter (as you would expect) but no abuse aimed towards him.

He probably thought his comments back was just part of the banter.

Was you there? If you were you'd know the layout of the away end, there was only a small part near front hence why i would have heard anything aimed at him when warming up

Don't see why so many have been getting their backs up over this. Players wind up opposition fans all the time mainly because the opposition fans do it to them in the first place thinking that they can get away with it, then as soon as said player gives a bit back the supporters can't handle it and start crying because the big nasty number 9 just took his shirt off and slid on his knees in front of them!

I went to school with james and dec. albeit only for the 1 year. Wouldnt say i was friends with them and hung around with them but they were really good close friends from an early age. Both coventry fans and both decent, down to earth genuinely nice guys. JC was always a good player and from what i heard was annoyed when we let him go out of the academy. I wasnt at the game so not seen the celebration or "banter" but does it really matter. He had his boots embroiled with "R.I.P Dec" on and said he was going to dedecate the game to him. Never mind just playing. He played his hometown club, days after losing a close friend and from all accounts played well and scored. I would of probably reacted the same way. Fair play to him.

Perhaps Collins thought shouting F Off was banter. Haven't you heard the old proverb - "One man's banter is another man's insult".

Who cares what he said or did.

I wouldn't say it insults me, he can celebrate how he likes and I don't know him to say he is a cock etc etc.

Although I don't think I could do that if I played against City, especially if my best mate who had just died was a massive city fan too.

The thing is all those blubbering about it HAVEN'T just scored against the City and HAVEN'T had a best mate who has just died. He reacted how he reacted. Move along people, etc etc

It's like I was referring to, he obviously did it as a middle finger up to the fans that were having a pop at him rather than a middle finger up to CCFC itself.

EDIT: In response to Nick

I was about 4 rows back in the bit above that, and people around me were shouting Collins you c*** and Collins you wanker while he was warming up. So not bullshit actually Billy Big Bollocks.

I heard him booed very lightly as he came on. Geezus if he didn't expect a bit of jip. Can't stand people who feel sorry when the players get a bit of what is essentially football banter. Yes it's normally very unintelligent and just calling someone a wanker and scum.. But that's all football banter is. Hardly witty humour time is it. End of the day, his celebration was provocation (along with several of his team mates) which in the law of the game is a bookable offence. Which he did, obviously for his shirt coming off aswell. But that's it. Done now. He looked a bit of a handful, but nothing incredible.

Priceless. So fans can abuse players (which can be a criminal offence) and then we moan when he does the same back.

There is security and police to monitor crowd to decide when they are breaking the law or the rules. The referee is there to do the same for the players. He broke the rule of provocation of opposing fans, and got punished for doing so.

So it's banter to call someone a wanker but then you get all prissy when he says something back. Do you k ow how ridiculous you sound.

So you was quite far back then. Like I said I was 6 rows from the front and didn't hear anything insulting till after the goal so I guess if I didn't hear it neither did Collins. It's interesting that your the only person who heard this 'insulting' language when he was warming up.

Completely agree, fans shouldn't dish it out to a player if they can't take it when the player gives a bit back. The fans don't deserve special treatment, they should get as good as they give and in this case our fans did!

There were some morons at the top signing, James Collins it could have been you when he came on

About the equivalent of 12 rows back, and the people I was with all heard it. I suspect Collins heard it.

I haven't got all prissy about anything. I said he did what he did and got booked by the letter of the law of the game. I said it was a bit of an idiotic thing to do, but where have I said it insulted me and offended me and he shouldn't be allowed to?
It's all part of the game of "football banter" as I've stated. Which you week in week out go to prove is the lowest form of wit.

A bit late in posting this, but at the end of the game I did see Collins gesture an apology to the fans and applaud them.

No excuse for celebration though, could have caused a lot of trouble
