He’s positive, not afraid and has some quality.

Whereas, you have Eccles as MOM, who cant put one accurate uncontested cross in to save his fucking life.
MOTM is hardly a huge accolade tonight, but I thought Eccles did a lot very well, especially in the first half. His crossing is poor, but I’m not going to crucify him for stepping up and taking corners in the apparent absence of any other players being willing to take them on the right hand side.

Eccles had a very good game tonight . He shouldn't be on set pieces but who else is stepping up?

He’s okay, does enough, some nice blocks and tackles but there are huge flaws. His passing at times is awful and the set pieces are absolutely woeful.

However, I find myself asking the same question; why the fuck isn’t anyone else capable of taking set pieces?

Totally agree , we have wide players within our squad surely they can deliver better.
Personally aside from set pieces he has been our most consistent performer

It’s a sorry state of affairs if Eccles is the only one volunteering to take set pieces.. or indeed is the only one able to get the ball as far as the box.

I see his upside but he’s limited in-amongst a limited midfield in general. He’s a good tackler and is committed defensively but moving forward he’s poor. But then so were Sheaf and Allen tonight.

All of that is fair, but I thought he did a better job than usual of moving the team forward tonight (four key passes today, more than any other player). If we’d recruited properly in the summer then he wouldn’t even be in the first XI but he’s doing a better job than I expected. The set pieces stuff is frustrating but people are ranting about it as if we should be scoring from corners every week, and no-one can name an obvious alternative.

Generally we are lightweight; plenty of the ball but largely ineffectual; no attacking threat and very little coherence. Team lacks a solid spine, seems devoid of leaders(hip), and is low on confidence. Other than that everything’s rosy.

Wilson 3, shocking for their opener and progressively filled me with dread
JDS, 4 poor again tonight. Did he come out for the 2nd half..
MVE 5, flattered to deceive
3 x CB’s 4/5, all about the same. Kitching at least showed some aggression
Sheaf 5, far from his best tonight, but he is a player and needs someone alongside to share the burden
Eccles 5, sorry but not a starter in any serious top 6 contender. We will not progress until we have better quality in the middle of the park
Tats 6.5, definitely has the work rate but flattered like MVE and ultimately no end product
Allen 5, does what JA does but struggled to make aimpact.
Wright 4.5, thankless task at times; caught offside too many times; missed chances and if he had taken the 1:1 it may ultimately have changed the game and mood. Not physical enough; baggies defensive unit not exactly tested tonight and not sure he has enough about him to play up top on his own.

Subs didn’t influence the game. CoH is going to need many more weeks to get his levels back; really struggling to understand why Lati isn’t a regular starter.

Good to see Jodi Jones there at the game, just as a regular joe. Not sure he really enjoyed it though…

Some absurd criticisms tonight, especially of Saka, Allen and Eccles (who played really well apart from the obvious poor set piece delivery, which he shouldn’t be asked to do anyway).

I’ve also got to question a lot of the comments about lack of effort, desire and team spirit. I really didn’t see anyone hiding tonight (or in any of the recent games). They all wanted the ball, never stopped trying and we knocked it around a lot, but without really threatening. To me that’s more of a sign of ineffective tactics than poor team spirit.

I generally like the new players that have been brought in, and I’m nowhere near as pessimistic as most seem to be. If you think this is terrible football, you can’t have very good memories. And if you think we were a top Championship side last season I reckon that’s a bit of an illusion too. Everything went our way for the last three months of last season (until Wembley), and nothing is going our way now.

I thought Saka did play quite well last night, but where was the end product?

I like him, but so many of his final balls are poor and he doesn't seem to want to shoot.

Wilson 4 didn't have much to do but did it badly

Van ewijk 5 lightening fast without the ball but has to slow it down in possession. Frustrating.

De silva 4 looks neat and tidy but largely ineffectual

Fadz 5 didn't do a lot but looks extremely slow at times

Thomas 5 I think there is a good defender there but makes me nervous at times. Needs to work on longer range passing.

Kitching 6 best of the defence and looks to have an aggressive combative side that we dearly need.

Sheaf 4 one of his worst performances, gave the ball away so much and did nothing when he had it. Ballooned a few shots again.

Eccles 5 worked hard and did the dirty work well but can't spot a clever through ball or over the top
Tats 6 was good in the first half but faded. Not sure why he got moved out of 10

Allen 6 lively as usual, thought he should score in first half.

Wright 5 I actually thought he did a lot right in terms of runs off the ball and some decent touches in the box but the finish is clearly lacking. Has to score the 1v1 so marked down. When is any of the midfield going to play. A ball over the top for him?

I personally preferred this box formation than the two strikers. We don't move the ball forwards quickly at times.
It looked like last night we’d played the box and Wright to counter their high press and give us an outlet yet we barely played the ball to him all night and built up slowly until West Brom were organised behind the ball.

He was one of the few players to take a shot and work the keeper. At one point he put 2-3 low balls in to a dangerous position and nobody reacted and went for it.

Quotes on here make it seem that Wrights only miss was the one on one in the only time he touched the ball for about 30 minutes. He missed three in the first half including another 1 v 1 tighter angle, failed to get a shot off when clear twice, was offside more than Huckerby and the one that came off his shin and went 6 yards wide was woeful. The only time he tried to link up he overhit his pass and he can't control a bag of cement.

He touched the ball 16 times last night I believe. His only contribution to the game was to miss chances.

I don't suppose you have the split by half do you? He had a little run near the end with a poor pass and the one on one, I can't recall him touching it other than that and being offside in the 2nd half.

Fair points, but I have been really impressed with his technical ability and touch, and his interplay with those around him. When we signed him I imagined he was only a tricky dribbler.

Considering he’s got no experience of a league like this, I think he’s doing really well and there’s more to come. All the things you say about his lack of end product and shooting could equally be said of COH (even in top form). In fact if Callum does leave, IMO Sakamoto is the closest thing we have to O’Hare Mk. II.

I thought Sakamoto had a decent game. Always makes himself available & doesn't often lose possession. End product could be better but he's not alone in that.
Wilson badly at fault for 1st goal and thought he got his angles wrong for the 2nd, and kind of invited their player the space to score, not quite as bad as, but similar to the 2nd Cardiff goal.
Wright played better in the sole striking role than I expected but should have put away the 2 really good chances he had.
I stuck up for Eccles' set pieces after the Bristol game but his delivery was awful last night. Shame as he otherwise played well enough - couldn't MVE take them instead? Judging from the free kick he scored earlier in the season it appears he can hit a decent dead ball!
