Jake Bidwell - Rolls Royce (4 Viewers)

After a very good display v Birmingham, I decided to look at his stats and noticed he has played 87% of our minutes this season. That is an extraordinary amount for a wingback and it is no wonder he’s been rested recently. He certainly looked better for it on Saturday.

In my view, he is a very good defender and is very good in the air for a wingback. I would be interested to know if @Frostie or another statistician could confirm whether the stats show this or if it’s purely down to the eye test.

Going forward he is average but provides valuable width and is certainly not a bad crosser. He isn’t going to beat a man but his work rate, aerial ability and intelligent running does provide somewhat of an attacking threat.

It’ll be sad if he does leave for Brum as rumoured. I think he provides the perfect balance for JWE. He is very much a Rolls Royce at this level.

I like how Robins plays him and BNC, then swaps for Dabo and JWE. Gives us an expansive unpredictable option with pace and a more reservered stronger and experienced option on the other side. A nice balance. As much as it might be nice to see the two young lads it would be a gamble.

I’d be surprised if there was any truth in him going to Birmingham - Robins clearly sees him as a key player.

He wins a higher % of Tackles than anyone else in the squad (73.3%). This has him in the top 5% amongst Championship FBs/WBs.

Wins 57.1% of his Aerial Duels, this is bettered by Dabo (60%) & most of the CBs (which you would probably expect) but he does actually win a higher % than Doyle (53.4%). This puts him in the 79th percentile amongst Championship FBs/WBs.

Funny how all of a sudden certain posters like looking at stats 🤭

He reads the game well and spots danger quickly. Very consistent and dependable. I have always rated him.

My concern was that flipping to a back 4 would bring about a loss of attacking impetus from the full backs. How wrong I was. Bidwell fantastic yesterday, MvE v good as well.

The irony is Bidwell gets to the line far more than Da Silva - he’s got phenomenal fitness levels and more pace and power

Another very good , solid performance from Bidwell , but I think that , that’s to be expected, from this very professional player & it would have been a great loss , if we had sold him in January to Blues

Yeah this. He gets forward without fear and although he's not as comfortable/technical on the ball, he's currently showing that doesn't matter. He's a proper athlete and shows no fear.

I have been wrong about him in the past.

I think Dasilva is a talent but Bidwell has stepped it up and is happy to try some more risky passes and that one there paid off beautifully.

I said that Bidwell would still get plenty of game time this season even though I thought Dasilva is the better player. So yeah I guess I was right.

Norton-Cuffy looked good yesterday. Remember when you said Todd Kane was better? 😂

Cuffy almost scored a goal - great save from their keeper. How we miss him.

To suggest you don’t have bias against Bidwell is laughable as when you made some stupid quip about Maatsen on another thread and was then laughed at and got all salty

I don't have a bias against Bidwell, I've been critical of his lack of attacking input in the past. I think Dasilva is the better player but Bidwell is in the team on merit, deserves the shirt and long may it continue if he keeps putting in performances like that.

Kane better than Norton Cuffy though, amazing 😂 Glad to see Kane finally got his move to the Premier League recently, you were right all along!

Personally think it’s one of the biggest things Robins has got wrong this year.

Play off final team, we’ve lost gus and vik, BNC, Doyle and McNally. Last thing we needed to do is then drop one of our most steady performers. Too reliable. He was superb yesterday.

I don’t buy into the ‘Dasilva is a better player’. He’s got a couple more tricks up his sleeve but has been caught out too many times defensively. Great back up option though.

Playing with wing backs in a five means they start further up the pitch - right against whoever their opponents are. To do that we leave ourselves light in midfield. With the three across midfield we look far better balanced and the full backs have space created for them to run into - which is why they were so much more dangerous yesterday. The reason Dasilva shouldn’t start ahead of Bidwell is that in a flat 4 he’s not good enough defensively.

I thought BNC yesterday was exactly the same as last season, i.e. ran around like a headless chicken, no positional sense, defensively shambolic but with the occasional spark going forward that made you think there might be some talent there. We sure as hell have upgraded in that area.

Bidwell is rightly in the team at the moment, but I still maintain Dasilva is the more talented player.
Dasilva is too weak and easily knocked off the ball and also too small , teams target his side knowing they can beat him in the air easily, and it’s no coincidence we’ve looked a lot stronger since Bidwell came back into the side.

I’m still not sold on JDS or his fellow Bristol C man, Palmer. JDS is a liability on defence and we’ve conceded many goals down that left side when he’s played. Palmer offers little and should be offloaded at the next opportunity.

Bidwell reminds me of Gnasher from Dennis the Menace. You will not pass or else. Really solid defender and gets forward well with good set pieces. Not sure how he’d feel about being compared to an Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound. Not sure I’d ask him either 🤣😱
