That it's very much Muslims that still do this (and let's not forget it's a tiny percentage of a tiny percentage of Muslims that do) is just as much down to conditions in places where Islam is prevalent - they tend to be very poor with little education and so they know no better. It's ingrained to such an extent that it's unfathomable for them to think it could be anything other than the truth.
Yes, sadly because Islam plays such a big part in their lives and therefore their politics it does become self-perpetuating, and they need to go through the turmoil the west did centuries ago to come out the other side. That's what they're doing right now and sadly some of the shit that happens because of it is horrific and unacceptable. Just as it was when we went 'civilising' the world, converting them to Christianity or wiping them out. Or even before that burning Catholics/Protestants just because they had minor differences in the same religion.
You may also want to look at the Chinese attitude and actions towards Muslims. I think you can safely call them victims there.

Should add Judaism to that list. That's a big issue particularly in the West Bank & Israeli expansionism there as well as with setting the current Israeli govt agenda on Gaza etc.
