I think we can get better than Palmer for certain, Allen less sure.
I'm in danger of going all ESB1 in saying Allen's abilities are underappreciated around here ;) Noticable this season btw that his role has been slightly different even when playing as an AM, he's been hitting more longer passes and through balls to the strikers (no doubt somebody will turn up with those damned stats to say that isn't actually the case!). In itself, his ability to adapt to what's needed is worth keeping.

Defo keeper. Then probably Bidwells position. A left footed version of MVE for that side would be lovely

His positioning is good. What I do like about him is he can have nothing to do for ages then pulls off a very good save. A lot of keepers can switch off.

Have you ever played in goal and tried to catch a shot with pace? Sometimes it is much safer to parry the ball into space or get it out for a corner. Go for the catch and fumble it puts you at big risk of giving away an easy goal. The last place you want a loose ball is directly in front of the goal. Most difficult ball for a defender to deal with if having to run towards the goal.

Of course it would be great to have a top class GK. But we have more urgent needs. Collins and the defence already have a good understanding.
Yes, I was a goalkeeper from school days to my 30s - I wasn't very good, but that's besides the point. He parries back into the box too often for my liking, and I think he loses his bearings at times. Not saying he's bad, but I doubt he'd get a game for a Leicester or Leeds, and that's who we need to be on a par with.

I like Allen, just I think you could find better and probably younger to do the same job.

I was also a keeper at school having trials for Nuneaton schoolboys but decided to play out and never got chosen lol.. but goalkeepers that can't catch the feckin ball drive me mad, it started as a 'foreign' thing and has now passed onto our keepers, I used to throw the ball onto the wall at our house and catch catch catch, even played a couple of matches in my 30s in goals and could still catch it grrrrrr

I think Collins is okay, our defence is dominant in the air so stopping on his line area at corners and crosses is best. Next season and possibly on the prem is another ball game for the total squad

I'm in my mid 50's now. I still play as a GK although injuries take much longer to get over.

On a par with Leicester? Think you're expecting a bit too much.

Never going to happen but if we went up I think we’d need: GK, RCB, LB, CM, ST absolute minimum. Like you say a whole other ball game.

Lets say miracles happen and we get O’Hare on a new deal, and a Hamer replacement in to play alongside your favourite of Eccles/Sheaf/Lats/Dabo.

Where do you upgrade next? No get outs, Doug wants a headline signing to go straight into this team.

Collins
MvE Thomas Kitching Bidwell
Hamer2 Sheaf
Saka O’Hare Wright
Simms

I think right now it’s probably Simms but he could still come good second half of the season.
Quite obviously Bidwell, wrong side of 30 and limited going forward.

It’s glaringly obvious that the upgrade would be Simms. But the magnitude of the upgrade depends on how much we have left after the CM spend.

Do you mean we will never get promoted ?
I agree with your assessment. Just got a sky sport package so have started watching more prem games and the big difference in players is pace, power, passing accuracy long and short, first touch. We will certainly need to up our game on those fronts.

Priority no 1 is a creative CM
After that, probably a striker. I feel Godden will leave after this season and Tavares may end up being let go, is my hunch

This season I can’t see it. Top four look very strong.
I'm expecting us to be top.6 unless affected by injuries.

I can see Ipswich dropping down a bit. Think it is a step too far first season back. And the teams below are now hitting their stride.

Win tonight would do us a lot of good. At the minute everyone from 4th downwards is drawing/losing (Except Sheff Wed).

Bidwell will be gone in January I’d guess

It’s not that we tried last January and he won’t I’m sure be offered another deal

Things change and frankly I think MR sees enough to keep him. We need a squad and him and JDS will both end up with plenty of game time. He’ll be here until the end of season IMO

If there's any way to get rid of Godden, Allen and JDS we should explore that. Sheaf always has a few mistakes in him - not sure whether to keep or replace. Wright has started to turn a corner, but I'm still underwhelmed by Simms. Not sure how long to persist with him.

I like certain players but know the next step would have to mean they go or except bit parts as squad players. Collins, Wilson, Moore, JDS, Fadz, Kelly, Allen, Godden and Tavares are the names for me as i could see potential to improve. That would mean bringing in.

1 GK
1 CB
1 Left sided player similar to MVE
2 CM
1 attacking player
1 FW

We could bring in 1 or 2 in Jan which would be 1 CM and 1 attacking player and the rest done come summer. Still think Callum is going to be an indicator of what's a head, but im sure we will find out soon enough.
