Hello

I'm an Ipswich Town fan who writes about the EFL. Ahead of the January window, I'm doing a 'squad surgery' series where I suggest transfer targets for a given team. I've written one about Coventry which I've shared below.

Let me know what you think. Do you like the targets I've picked or are there other positions you think might need strengthening first?

Hope you enjoy and good luck for the rest of the season

How come you’ve underestimated Ipswich so much?
Good article
Thanks.

I put us 13th in my pre-season predictions, for a few reasons. We switched our style of play towards the end of last season but I wasn’t sure how well we’d be able to sustain defensive pressure a level higher. There was also a bit of doubt as to whether George Hirst would step up after his previous record at the level. Both of these worries turned out not to be a problem, although Hirst’s injury on Boxing Day is a concern.

I’m a bit of a natural pessimist too - I’m 24 and until May I’d never seen us do anything good so I gave up on outlandish predictions for us a while ago!

I thought the gap between the bottom half and the lower reaches of the top six was going to be tight so there was always an outside shot of the playoffs but never expected us to be in the hunt for automatics.

Nice article. Certainly better than the shite FootballInsider247EFL or whatever puts out.

Think you’re a little harsh on Wright, but otherwise would agree and other than Styles they’re all new names to me. I suspect we’ll loan in the wide players, but otherwise seems well thought out and spot on.

Thanks 😃

Fingers crossed. We’ve got a big January ahead, I’ve written a similar article about out targets which will be released soon.

Thank you. Wright’s definitely improved, just think having a different type of player as an option there would be handy.

Good article that and reasonably accurate in positions we could do with strengthening for me our priority is midfield and striker both with pace and left sided midfielder a bonus, not really got a clue who to be honest.

That's a good read, so firstly we'll done.
Some interesting potential target's mentioned.
Would you like to join our recruitment team from St Albans and Wimbledon? they don't have a clue.

Cheers. The striker market is going to be just as tough as it was in the summer - we’ll be after two and I can think of half the league who will be wanting one.

They’ll all be going for similar targets and with the gap between 6th and 15th so small, these players will have a lot of interesting choices.

We have to get at least one winger in and should be aiming for two.

If Sakamoto or Wright got injured we'd be fucked I think. Don't see anyone else in the squad I would be confident starting out wide.

The Hamer replacement above all else

But with Simms misfiring, Godden past his sell-by and Wright now at home on the left of a 4-3-3, surely the next call for a loanee is a physically strong front man, probably from a top tier club.

Robins won’t give up on Simms that quickly, nor should he.

we need an 8 and cover out wide as priorities
It's not a question of giving up on Simms. He's on a four year contract. He doesn't have to play every minute now. We didn't do that to Gyokeres when he first arrived.

Where does that leave Godden then? If another striker comes in and Simms is second choice he will hardly be seeing any minutes.

I think another striker is quite far down the priority list.

I think Goddens days are numbered TBH. He’s looked miles off it this season even though his purple patch still puts him top scorer. When he’s not scoring he contributes fuck all. In a possession based team with 6 midfielders that’s one thing. In this new counter attacking side he’s sadly useless.

I agree, but in a window where we should be looking to sign a top quality CM and two competitive wingers I don’t see how a striker fits in. I can’t see us spending on a permanent deal, and a loan will leave us in the same situation come the summer.

Thought he looked alright in our counter attacking team last season! I think the days of him starting regularly are almost gone, but if he’s prepared to play more of a backup role then I think he has a lot to offer the squad as one of its senior members.

From an outside perspective, I think the fact Godden has lasted so long at Championship level is testament to Robins. Similarly with Wilson, nobody would have expected him to win the golden glove a few years back. With both players it's not much of a surprise they've dropped off a bit this year.

Glad to see Mason Clark move to Coventry, as per my suggestion! Maybe a bit frustrating he hasn’t joined straight away but it would’ve been difficult to prize him away from Peterborough in the middle of the promotion hunt.

As for my own team, I’m very happy with our window too. Given the disparity in budgets, it’s great that we’ve done probably the best business in the top four.

That’s an interesting take. You’ll make play offs but miss out on autos now

Will be a huge ask for us to stay in play offs without our captain for up to 6 weeks. Kelly will do a good job though but he’s not sheaf
