I hardly sleep to be honest - I go to bed about 1 am and stay awake until probably 3 - I doubt I’ve had more than 3 hours uninterrupted for years - I’m just used to it

Is it really good? I've tried white noise in the past and that helped a bit but no more
I find it helps me - I also tried white noise and didn't get anywhere with but I find brown noise actually does something. If there is something like that in the background, it seems to stop my mind from racing.

Have you ever spoken to a professional about insomnia/anxiety? And I don't mean getting sleeping tablets off the doctor.

I work from home, but its quite a brain engaging role if that makes sense?

And i make sure i go for a fast walk twice a day, do about 8500 steps.

Always eat dinner around 5, 5.30, always eat relatively healthy also
Sometimes there’s nothing you are doing wrong it just happens and you just need to try stuff

Does Magnesium powder help? I was looking at those Melatonin patches.
Yeh it definitely works. It’s not some quack or pseudo science it actually has muscle relaxant properties but can take it every night no bother. I had a TMJ specialist recommend it specifically because it can relax the jaw muscles

If I time it right I’m falling asleep on the sofa

Same, my Mrs could sleep on a fucking washing line!

I wish i could have 5 hours, im having none at the moment 😂
Mine is the same. Do you get sleep envy? I know I do. Lying awake thinking look at that bitch, sleeping like she doesn’t have a care in the world. She really annoys me too when she says I should get up earlier so everything isn’t such a rush in the morning, she doesn’t seem to get it that even if I get up at the last possible minute she’s still had 2-3 hours more sleep than me even though she’s been up for an hour before me. Just selfish some people.

Have you ever looked into trying to change that?

I used to just accept it but I’ve read this book and a good consistent amount of sleep is probably the single best thing you can do for yourself. Kinda wild what your body actually does when it sleeps

Do you have much caffeine later in the day?

Elbow drop her.

(I know some people on here can't tell between serious and joking, I'm not endorsing domestic abuse).

When I did regular night shifts my sleep pattern was all over the place . I tried a breathing technique to help me get to sleep

you take a deep breath in for a count of seven and hold it for a count of seven then breath put as fast as you can , then do it for a count of 6,5 4,3,2,1. Worked well haven’t done regular nights for about 3 years and don’t really miss them
I listen to a podcast on a sleep timer to help me get to sleep now

Yeah, good shout. Breathing/meditation to try to relax the mind. I used this when I was going through a particularly stressful period of my life. Not so much to help sleep but to clear and rest my mind. Helped before bed though. It’s a 30 min one but also 20 min available

Might be worth a crack saddlebrains. Also seen CBD mentioned which worked sometimes for me (caveat I’m not a doc though !) Good luck.

I did the Wim Hof method when I was stressed:

Seems similar!

The tyranny of a six month old is trashing my sleep. He's only doing about three to four hours a night atm (and he seems quite happy with that!!!) but, he only goes down for an hour a go sometimes. As it can take me that long to fall back asleep regardless of tiredness, I'm in severe torment!

Never experienced insomnia so I apologise if this is a shit suggestion.

Headspace do sleep casts which I’ve been using last couple of weeks. 45 minutes of some person describing a scenario (like a bakery) with ambient noise. I haven’t been able to listen to one past around 20 minutes

I have sleep apnea so never have a solid night's sleep, problem is I almost always fall asleep when the football is on at night for about half an hour, then can't sleep later. Weight and diet doesn't help though tbh so making a concerted effort when I come back from hols that I'm going on next week.

I have a 40minute audio that I listen to that puts me into a proper sleepy state. I can send it to anyone that wants it. It's actually about being able to talk to anyone but it's just great for relaxing you. If anyone wants a copy dm me your email and I'll send it across.

Small aside but my Dad had bad sleep apnea. After years of trying to get him to see somebody, a specialist sorted him out after a short while.

So if you haven't seen your doctor, do so!

Can’t you plug your earphones in and play Brave? Should put you in a coma for a week.

Thx, I have been to a specialist who did some tests then gave me this machine that sounds like Darth Vader. I know it will help as pumping oxygen in, but I get all worked up with it on and frustrated just can't get on with it at all even though I know it will help me.

I can get that!

Seems my Dad got lucky that tablets did the trick for him then(!)

Listened to extracts in pods from different sleep experts and they all talk about finding what’s right for you and how we are all different and that some can get by on far less sleep etc but all talk about trying to have a consistent time and pattern to going to bed to help get the best sleep, even if that sleep is only a few hours
Don't stress by the volume but measure the quality, if exhausted and tired then clearly you need better sleep.

hope the medication helps but also try the non medication ideas above, all really good, especially the 3am one

I was looking for tips on how to get to sleep when stressed and one thing I read was how the US military teaches soldiers to get to sleep in the battlefield. IIRC you start at your toes and basically tense every muscle in your body until you get to your finger tips and then go all the way back to your toes again then keep doing this until you go off. Never tried it but I guess if the US military is teaching soldiers to do this as a technique to get to sleep in a stressful situation there must be something in it.
