According to our solicitors the searches will be done by Friday then it’s all systems go

Can’t lie to you lads and I know I’ll sound ungrateful and a bit of a tosser but living with me mum and dad has been really hard, it’s no one’s fault stress of moving, Christmas both parents have dementia and Alzheimer’s and literally living under each other’s feet . But everyday that goes by is another day closer to getting into the house

There has been some good laughs too though

Did what was supposed to be three weeks and turned into seven months cos the first purchase fell through.

Not fun.

Not that odd. I get on fine with my parents as long as I'm free to sod off after a couple of hours!

Got a letter from our solicitor to say we are all set for completion next Friday

Yes they had gone away for a few days when we thought we were completing a bit earlier, conveniently completed at the end of the month:unsure:

We'll go on a Trade Visa which allows an initial stay of 2 years, extendable depending on the level of trade generated.
In reality we'd split each year 8mths US/ 4mths UK.
That's what you call timing, did you get the code

Agreed a sale last week and the guy buying it has said his wife isn’t happy with the price and wants £5k more off. Why agree on the first place? If it’s a tactic it’s poor form IMO

Already started viewing, falling in love and putting offers in on properties.

Feeling deflated!

It's often a nightmare selling your house,last time I sold one a family agreed to buy at a slightly reduced price subject to being able to get their children into Finham park....the agent said I should leave the house on the market maybe at the "new" price I did that and after the first advert the family interested came straight back with a further reduced offer....I just took the house off the market for a year tbh.

I'd just tell them you've got an alternative offer around the same price

As above, it's a pressure tactic. Just tell your agent to let the buyer know you have another offer on the table for same price, and set a deadline of 48 hours (or something) to come back to your agent with a decision either way. Most likely they want the house, otherwise they wouldn't have offered and agreed a price.

I’ve gone back and said original offer or move on. Didn’t think to suggest bluffing with another offer on the table but hopefully agents would have done that anyway.

Hopefully they turn round and reinstate the original offer knowing we won’t budge. Thanks for the advice

Too Nice.

Either tell them you've decided you don't like their attitude so not selling to them or the price goes up £5k in 48hours.

Update today is that wife is still not happy with the original agreement and will now only go 5k under what was originally agreed. They wanted to let me know they’ll be viewing properties now and update next week.

Upset to be potentially missing out on what I’ve seen but on principal I’m staying firm
Good for you Mr P, they're trying it on, thinking you will cave in. I'm sure you will get someone else in at the right price

I'd probably tell them to do one. If they're like this now every chance they're going to be causing problems through the whole process.

Very true and this does come into my thinking. Hopeful one of my other viewings will come forward with an offer so I have the pleasure of letting them know it's now unavailable!

The fact that they've said they'll update you next week confirms they're playing you. They want to keep you on the hook.
Seriously, get your agent to call them to say he's been instructed to increase the price by 5k on Monday.

What are their circumstances? I'd be concerned they'll be looking for excuses to lower the offer all through the selling process.

Renters. Yeah, same concerns - already separated myself from this being a serious possibility of moving forward - I’m still on the market and open to viewings

I'm now finally in a position In life to save for a mortgage. I'm 33 so late starter but reasons as to why

Anyway, In just under 4 years time we will have a 30k deposit. However, I look around at House prices and I genuinely think fuck it. Why do I want to owe 300 grand for a 3 bedder in Coundon? What you get for your money now is a shambles.

So I've thought of another plan, tell me if you think this is stupid. Lad is 15 Daughter 10.

Law of averages they'd be moved out, kids married etc by 30. So that gives me 20 years of saving between me and the Mrs 8 grand a year.

In 20 years time we could have £160,000 and of course more if we're better with saving, equivalent at the moment to €190,000.

I would much rather rent until then, and fuckoff somewhere like Torrevieja and buy a nice little 2 or 3 bed place out there to see out my last few decades. You get so so much more for your money in the housing markets abroad

We will have decent pensions to live off.

I know a lot of people say a big plus of owning a house is an asset for your kids to inherit, which is fair, but I have life insurance I pay everymonth and 4.5 times salary life assurance through work so the kids will be fine anyway

Is owning a property really the be all and end all of life? Because it really is not as attractive as it used to be

Owning a house isn't the only option, but it sure is better than trying to pay rent on a pension when you want to retire.

I imagine 95% of people in the UK will tell you that you are wrong, but I'll sit in the 5%. Life is too short, if your dream is to get out somewhere warmer and live your days then go and do it. My mentality I think is similar to yours. I'm currently saving for a deposit on a second home and I've been working my arse off to reach it. Almost there now. When I'm not there physically I'll rent it, when I'm a bit financial stronger, I'll go full time.

As is pretty clear on this forum, I've spent a lot of time travelling and putting myself out there. Never regretted it ever. Like I said to you with flying, you'll never regret it when you go either. My advice would be to save away and get that dream place, if that's your gut feeling.

Let me know when you do, and I'll come and have a beer!

I just cannot believe the price of a house in this country it's a complete travesty. The value for money is terrible.

You can do both, buy now and get 20 years+ of price increases in this country and then sell up and move on to Spain or whatever. If the plan was to go within a few years, I'd say to stick with renting but with such a long time frame until you plan to move, I'd say buy.

I don't agree. I have a mortgage in UK, rent an apartment in Netherlands, and spend about a third of the year travelling. The first was for ease and where I was living at the time, but like you said, the money for a 3 bed in Coundon will get you somewhere with a sea view and pool where the sun shines 200-300 days a year.

Second home will be abroad, without doubt. Will almost certainly be - I'm looking probably at Spain (Specifically Balearic Islands). I worked hard to learn Spanish and can speak it fairly fluently now. That'll count for something when it matters. I would encourage you to do the same.

Going back to the comments from your friends, there's always a crab bucket syndrome. Some of the best people I've ever met are those in far flung places that bucked that trend though. Yes, owning is better than renting, but if you're off in a few years I know what I would do. Unless you buy in UK and rent that.

If your saving £8k a year AND paying rent, why not just get a mortgage ASAP?

The rent you'll pay is dead money, and house prices may well rise as fast as your saving. And remember your rent will increase every year, while you can lock into a fixed rate mortgage for years, so eventually your mortgage will be less than the rent.

When your mortgage is finally paid, you can rent your house out and rent a cheaper place abroad and have cash in your pocket, while keeping your house here as an asset to pass onto your kids, or to move back to if you ever need to.
