Just thought I’d share with you something that happened last week at the Melbourne Victory game.



Occasionally I go watch Melbourne United basketball and there’s sooo much entertainment outside of just the match itself that makes it so appealing to go see it live that you go for the experience.

Could you imagine this at a packed CBS arena?

I hear live and die in these towns when I stream the games but I’m just a bit like merhhhh… maybe it’s different when you are there but it seems a bit repetitive

Looks quality, football has changed in this country for the better, I saw an old mate Friday who said he's not getting a season ticket next year because there's to many kids and women that go, he preferred the 80s and 90s, the more that go the better the experience. The Melbourne Utd clip would be amazing for the few home games going for promotion

It’s fine not to like We’ll Live and Die (but fwiw I don’t think I’ll ever recover from it at Wembley) but yet another version of Will Grigg’s on Fire is the very definition of a bit repetitive surely?

Melbourne United basketball do loads of cool things with their sponsors, when the other team get 2 free throws they have these clappers that everyone has and basically the PR bloke shouts out if they miss their two shots the food sponsor ‘for example Burger King’ will give you a free burger if you go in and show your ticket after the game so then everyone goes crazy with the clappers to put the player off lol. Quite funny and not very sportsman like but it’s hilarious to watch as the fans go crazy if they miss cause they win free burgers

With people complaining about the price, could we not offer more entertainment to make it more of an experience that you don’t get from watching from the comfort of your own home? With Sky Sports + now showing more games could it be that it just doesn’t beat the experience live and offering the fan a greater experience?

They have a t shirt cannon that they fire out club jerseys into the crowd during the break.

Obviously not everything people in the UK will like but it’s entertaining. Might not be your cup of tea but think of the kids.

Is Sky Blue Sam really doing enough walking round and waving or could he be walking round with a t shirt cannon firing shirts into the family stand or even kicking footballs into the stand for the kids. For the kids that would be really entertaining for them which sometimes half time can be very boring watching the subs warm up. I could imagine lots of kids begging for them to take them to watch Cov on a weekend if we made it a better live experience.

It’s about attracting the fans of tomorrow and keeping them so they don’t follow a Man City or the likes

Sorry, it’s nothing special.

There are several clubs in the Championship that have their own anthem.
You need to get over here. Big game, big crowd and you will be surprised. The Wembley game is a good example

Mate I was a season ticket holder at both Highfield and ‘Ricoh Arena’ for many years.

While I’ve not been there for a while I fully get it. I was also there last season against Millwall over the Christmas break

I remember going to an NBA game and every single break in play they were doing something to either hold your attention or try to take your money, found it all a bit much. Get the song on before kickoff, at half time put a video on the scoreboard and have someone fall on their arse trying to kick it for a ticket, that'll do

I think there’s an argument for having something before and after games to spread out fans arriving and leaving TBH. QPR game seemed to work better afterwards with half the crowd sticking around for a bit to clap the players off. But maybe I missed the chaos because I was clapping players

Always better when stuff organically grows also, like WLADITT and now the flag which im sure will get wheeled out next season a lot.

So I think that means if we do make it to the Premiership you can expect all of this - like it or not!

I can imagine light shows / fireworks, booking music acts etc is pricey. Adding a few other pre-match entertainments / half time games or whatever that give away things that are cheap for the club like tickets, merchandise or player experiences would be easy and would add to the engagement with younger fans. I'd expect where it's cheaper to do, we'll see more of it.

100% agree. It's a football match, I'm here to watch football and support the team. That should be exciting enough for everyone.

I've been to some American sports, like the NFL when they behave like they are entertaining people with the attention span of a 5 year old. It's fun and I enjoy it but it's a novelty, I would hate it at the CBS.

The light shows would require replacing all the floodlights at a guess which won't be cheap but would be a one off thing. I have a feeling Frasers did some work upgrading them when they game in as they had fallen below the minimum requirements for TV games so if they've just spend a chunk of cash on them doubt they're inclined to replace them.

The fireworks, or more likely fire, can't be that expensive. They do it at Edgbaston for games with much smaller crowds than we get but tbh I'm not sure if I want all that. I'm quite happy with things being a bit more old school. Would things like that really make anyone more likely to attend games or generate more atmosphere than the build up does at the moment?

I went to Munster v Saracens a few years a go at the then Ricoh and the food vans and bars they had in car park before were good. The atmosphere built up really nicely out there before the match. Maybe we could do that occasionally in the summer - that said we probably make more money from selling the parking, compared to that day when lots of the Munster fans had presumably flown in and didn't need as much of it. I hate those pitch side flame thrower things. Didn't like them anyway but associate them with Wasps too much now.

very true. the weather plays into things, if you think about the fans parks at Wembley people have a good time because you're outside in the sun having a beer. Not going to be the same same up at the CBS when its pissing down

We can barely hear anything through those speakers anyway and I am fairly sure the floodlights aren’t good enough for the premier league let alone a light show.

People are happy in the back and outside spending money on food and booze don’t rush them away from that to see something.

Plenty of people having beers outside before the game now!

One thing I hate about rugby matches is when the Announcer/DJ feels the need to punctuate any stoppage in the game with a ridiculously short blast of music!

Nothing worse than someone trying to force their idea of a good time on you.

Football and rugby are entertaining enough without fans having to massage the announcer/DJ's ego.
