I think Robins has done a fantastic job at the City and would hate to see him go.
I’m just wondering if we have reached the pinnacle of his ability? Could anyone else that we could attract do any better and get us over the line? And if Robins did get us over the line could we become a stable premier league team?
This is not a Robins out thread, just a friendly discussion

I agree with Alex, but if next season we start like the last 2, I am not sure Doug will think the same - we need to be top 6 all season

The upcoming season is a big one for him as the expectation will be there from the owner and fans.

Robins has done something I am not sure any other manager could have really done, given the extreme circumstances in terms of the state of the club, the finances, the ownership and the fan relationship.

I think there could be an apex in the next 2 seasons where we're not progressing despite the clear investment and uplevelling of the squad - time will tell. I hope that's not the case because I want Robins to take us all the way!

I don't know enough about the day to day but I think it's been said that Robins is not a hands on coach. I think if you look at the low budget successes winning promotion to the prem they tend to be more coaches - and they have a very clear & modern identity and prescribed way of playing. Players are coached in detail - I don't think this is really what Robins likes to do and wants to do. So I think if there's an opportunity for someone to do better it would be a true coach manager in this area.

He's more than earned however many years he's prepared to stay and has certainly earned a crack at the Prem.
He has developed a genuine affinity with the club, he knows how to build teams, nurture healthy dressing rooms and create an environment that players enjoy being involved in.
I believe we would not even be discussing top 6 Championship finishes were it not for him.
A change of manager would be a massive gamble against the odds for me.

Thats fine if Doug is giving him a top six budget. Otherwise he should be glad to have MR at the helm outperforming the resources made available to him. A season flirting with relegation is a different matter of course.

That feels right, doesn't it? But then Luton, Ipswich and perhaps even Portsmouth next year all heavily outperform their budget - this comes back to the point I was making about a more opinionated approach to football from the manager down. If Robins has a weakness in this age - it is probably the very thing that made him work here up until this point - pragmatism.

I hope it doesn't happen but I also won't be surprised if in a few years we hit a bit of a wall with the current approach. Maybe the new first team coach this time will evolve us again, but if not - I think that's the one area you could probably say Robins could do more of.

its a good thing to discuss because one day Robins will be gone. Im not sure he will retire here. Whoever does come in after will have a hell of a Job to win the fans over i think.

Huge budget last year though for Ipswich?

MR has done a fantastic job thus far. He’s had to battle through all extremes of circumstances and kept CCFC afloat and respectable.
My only criticism is that at times he makes excuses for the players/ performances even before a ball is kicked and I’m not always sure that motivates 100%. He also makes some odd substitution decisions.
All that said I would like to see him given all the tools he needs and another couple of years to achieve the promotion he is plotting.

How does their 23-24 spend compare to ours?

The point is I think there are other managers performing very well on a budget around our level. Robins has done a job I can’t imagine anyone else could but we may start to see the ceiling of his approach in the next year or so. That’s when things might get tough.

You can do an exceptional job in one phase and run out of road at another, it happens.

I think if I could have my cake and eat it, I’d like to see a more modern first team coach come in and take us on another level, with Robins at the helm.

Excuses? What other top managers have you listened to? I think he is pretty balanced and honest. He tends to put the responsibility on the group while recognizing the oppositions strengths. The later is something our fans tend to gloss over being blindsided by league position or some preconceived idea of the opposition club being tin pot.

When he talks about fatigue I am sure it is based on a lot more data than what is in Joe Blog's head sitting in the stand.

Robins has weaknesses, as all Managers do.

I’m sure next season we’ll moan about his lack of substitutions, his stubbornness and his post match excuses.

It sort of doesn’t matter, he’s earned the right to have a solid couple of years to enjoy a stable ownership and funds to spend on players. He’ll take us to the Premier League, but as with most MR seasons, it’ll be a rollercoaster I’m sure.

He isn’t leaving until he gets us there. That’s how close we are. Whether it’s next season, one after or whatever….I’m convinced he’s taking us there.

Doug King would be an absolute fool to think otherwise. Luckily, he seems like a smart enough bloke.

Robins wants his statue…preferably with the correct spelling of his name on it.
