Bums on seats (1 Viewer)

Are these a thing of the past, do they even exist anymore? Who realistically can literally put thousands on a gate.

Trying to think who we have signed in the past that comes into this category.
Arguably Speedie, that signing showed real intent, did it fill seats, probably not, who am I missing or is it a outdated myth.

Craig Bellamy? I was probably a bit too young to remember back then, but regardless of how it ended up, surely he was a big pull for the club at the time?

Possibly Cyril Regis from West Brom ? Signed for us the day after we embarrassingly got knocked out of the league cup by Walsall 0-3 at HR.
Was astonished we managed to sign Cyril, but not certain if it impacted attendances, maybe it did?
It was certainly a coup at the time.

Possibly, he certainly generated a bit of a stir, again though doubt his signing got people through the door?

To much of a big ego, so disappointing 😕

As the replacement for Keane, with a cocky attitude (and performances that fell well short) I'm afraid he had the opposite effect.

Cobi Jones, Hadji and Chippo certainly raised a eyebrow, there's probably a few more the more I think about it.

Yep, the Chris Kirkland episode of Under the Cosh gives a bit of insight into his time at Coventry. Think he was expecting a move elsewhere and didn't want to be here.
Just wasn't sure what the hype was when he initially signed for us

good shout, definitely increased the gate, I remember his debut, and it did seem busy, although 1st game of the season is usually well attended.
You've hit the nail on the head, definitely a bums on seat signing.
Keane didn't sign in time to play the 1st game, he made his debut against Derby in our 4th league game of the season.

Smarty pants!
I remember going to Leicester for our 2nd game of the season & hearing that we had sold Huckerby and being really pessimistic about the season. A couple of days later it was reported that we were trying to sign Robbie Keane & the world was suddenly a much better place!

This. I'm sure big Ron put a couple of thousand on the gates instantly .
I think the signing of Gary McAlister showed real intent by the club that we wanted to achieve things .
After all , he was coming from Leeds and was a big influence there, and they were a huge club.

Massive optimism that summer when we signed McAllister, straight after Euro 96.

Then Benfica beat us 20-0 in a pre-season friendly and it all fell apart before it even began!

I was 11 years old and at the peak of my football nerd stage in terms of knowing everything about other teams' players (I could probably name less than 50, current, other teams' players in the whole world now 😅).

I was obviously heartbroken about my favourite player, Huckerby, leaving. But then I remember my delight in trying to explain to my Dad just what a big deal it was to be signing Robbie Keane - I don't think he took my ridiculous enthusiasm quite as seriously as he should have until after that Derby game. I was then pretty much obsessed with Keano until he left. And it all went downhill from there as a Coventry fan up until the Mark Robins era!

The word " bellend" actually originates from this bellend.

i remember coming out of the shop at HR and seeing a big car pull up. phil neal got out, and so did some "scruffy looking kid" who i vaguely recognised but couldn't put a name to.
a few days later it was announced we'd signed cobi jones.
