Always feel like he's a bit underappreciated by the English, personally think he's the best English left back of all time and arguably one of the best of his generation Ashley-Cole-Needs-no-introduction-it-has-to-be-said-this-is-a-somewhat-optimistic-inclusion.jpg

Was the best left back in the world for about 3 or 4 years the same time Roberto Carlos was playing , a genuine great IMHO

Won 16 major honours between arsenal and chelsea

Roberto Carlos is quite a bit older than Ashley Cole so his peak overlapped with a veteran Roberto Carlos. But I agree that he is underappreciated. Most probably because a lot of people consider him to be a bit of a knob.

And to confirm the bias, when I saw a thread with him as the title my immediate thought was “what has he done now”.

Fantastic player, hugely underrated especially defensively.

Class player. Walked into every England squad he was fit for. Second best to play in the Prem after Irwin.

My immediate first thought was "oh my God, he's now 43 years old, we're surely not in for him are we?"

Could you imagine putting 2004-10 Ashley Cole in our England team today (probably our weakest position right now)? An absolutely frightening prospect.

Greatest of his generation is an interesting question though. I’d consider Carlos, Lizarazu and Maldini’s peaks as the generation prior, but between 04 and 12, who was his equal at LB? There’s some overlap with Marcelo and Lahm but I’d consider their peak later than Cole. Evra, and Chivu are the main ones that come to mind that were at the top of their game at the same time.

Excellent player. I saw him play even late in his career for Roma at Man City and he still looked class. I think I saw him play at Highfield Rd for Arsenal in the relegation season as well as it goes.

He was a great player - the Cashley Cole thing gave an unfair opinion of him. He raised loads of money for charity - gave his car to charity once - but never courted any publicity
