To be honest, looking at how this group stage has panned out, I don’t think our performances have been *that* bad.

France, Belgium, Italy - 2nd place
Netherlands - 3rd place
Portugal - lost a game
Germany - needed a stoppage time goal to avoid finishing 2nd

The only team to come out best is Spain and they’re rewarded with a tough half of the group! Personally do not think they’ll make the final either.

Our minimum requirements now has got to be the final and anything other than that and this tournament is definitively a failure.
Portugal made 8 changes tbh , England have been poor there's no getting around that mate , with the easiest group

I think for the knockout stage we face the labour party - That's gonna be taxing.

Il be gobsmacked if we don't win Sunday

I just have that feeling. Like 3 games on the trot we have done the same thing. You are right of course we really should win but have a nagging doubt. I hope he makes changes and brings the likes of Palmer in from the start. We may well need a spark in a game where again we will need to break down a defensive opposition

Anything short of the final is now failure. I also have my doubts over whether you can be suitably prepared for a big slobberknocker of a final having basically played the ‘fodder’ side of the draw. Although I do think we could easily come unstuck against at least 4 of our side of the draw.

Politics free thread please 😊. Managed to completely avoid the election until now 😂
What if I were to say that Sunak is probably more optimistic that he will still be in no 10 on the 5th July than England fans have of still being in the Euros on 1st July?

Has the benefit of being true, at least!

Agreed, I spent €200 on the England match, which was ‘cheap’ considering most listings were €400 initially… which is the most I’ve spent on a footy match.

Improvement is needed, 1000% agreed… the tournament so far has had so many underperforming favourites. Ourselves, France and Belgium in particular have performed below expectations.

I’d fancy us against anyone because I’m a delusional fan, of course but no one in our half of the bracket should beat us. We beat Italy twice in qualification and should we meet the Dutch in the semis… it’s got to a win for us!

Even if we got to, and lost, the final it can’t be considered a failure if really. If I was Southgate, I’d walk regardless of the result. We don’t win it all, he sacks off all the grief he gets regularly and if we win it, he resigns on a high.

If France were in our bracket, I’d consider a SF loss to them as “acceptable” - no one in our bracket should come close to us. The group games were bad, yes but the players need to live with the expectation and blow these teams away now.

I think this team currently could come unstuck against anyone such is it’s fragility

Team of the tournament so far as entertaining is concerned : Georgia. Brilliant attacking football. A joy to watch. An antidote to watching England.

I saw something earlier on in thread and I would like to share a blog.

I honestly think it’s ruining the group stages at the Euros. To reflect on last nights game, but this applies elsewhere too, Slovenia were happy for a draw even if they finished 3rd place.

In this round of games, Romania and Slovakia both know they’re through irrespective of that happens in the other game.

Ironically, Belgium’s coach is highly regarded and they’re likely to finish second in the only group ranked lower than ours.

They need to go back to 4 groups( tough competition ) , or it has to be 8 (weaker competition )..

Can't have 3rd placed failures going through it's stupid

Realistically, UEFA will only expand it and I’m not against that, but let’s reduce the qualification process because I agree the competition would be weaker.

It’s fundamentally unfair, for example, that the teams in the later groups know exactly what they need to progress so it becomes like a chess match and not in a good way.

It really irritates me that all the weaker teams are happy to have 20-30% possession to force draws. Compare to the World Cup where we battered Wales because they needed a result against us.

Fun reading for those who are interested.

Edit- Anyone want to build a narrative for a swiss-style system which will be basically the Champions League next year. Easily done!

Greatest Italian footballer of All time ?

I think roberto baggio

But it's a tough one and not as straight forward as some countries

It's a country where defenders and goalkeepers really stand out, unlike most other countries.

Italy doing a passable impression of England.

If Switzerland had a half decent striker they would be a very x very good side.
