There was a drone spotted near maximum security HMP Long Lartin, Worcs, last night. Plod were dispatched and found three guys in a car parked nearby, with a drone, a load of fishing hooks and a sackful of weed! Three arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to import prohibited goods to a prison!

It’s completely mad to have sentenced so many people and increased sentences for most crimes and then not provide enough spaces

Build more Prisons is surely a better option than releasing criminals on the street.

Cant go back in time and make decisions on prisons. Any building is going to be some way off now.

Deporting foreign nationals in our prisons will free up a lot of places. Depends on the home offices appetite for it though.

Well locally both prisons in Northamptonshire are expanding adding about 750 spaces

It’s a mixture of all things it all has to be joined up
So increase the sentences
Send more people to prison
And increase prison capacity
And increase staff to ensure when people are released on licence they are unlikely to offend and be returned
There’s also staffing the home office to prioritise the two current processes to send foreign prisoners back to their countries once sentenced or as they are released
It’s just joined up government and this isn’t getting on to probation and parole and magistrates and court funding
Or police services

It’s about 10-15% and they rules are quite clear and are starting to be used

Drug offences another 10%+ could be looked at you’d have thought. But don’t get the impression Starmer is particularly progressive there.

I don’t know what the criteria are, but I’d rather let out every non violent criminal before a single violent one. No doubt someone will have some amazing example to make me change my mind but that’s seems like an obvious rule of thumb.
