May be wrong on this, but Italy played attacking football at Euro 2020 and won, Argentina played attacking football at World Cup 2022 and won, Spain look easily capable of winning this tournament whilst playing attacking football.

Do we have to accept that defensive football at international level isn’t necessarily the success metric it once was?

That Jamal goal reminded me of the goal Ndlovu scored against Villa.

Spains obvious weakness is their defence - particularly full backs lack of pace. If we do beat the Dutch, GS absolutely has to be brave, and attack them down the flanks with pace. Otherwise we'll barely get a kick, as we watch them pass us to death.

It’s the type of game where, if we had Kane dropping deep and runners going beyond him (I’m thinking more Saka and Gordon as opposed to Foden and Bellingham) there’s going to be opportunities. Proper traditional counter-attacking play.

Of course, we’ll see exactly the same as we’ve seen in every game so far, should we make it.

To be fair, you’ve got:

France 2018
Portugal 2016
Spain 2012 (yes, I know they turned it on in the final)
Spain 2010
Italy 2006
Greece 2004

This period of tournaments have been dominated by defensive play. Germany 2014 I wouldn’t call attacking either, but more balance to their play. Spain 2008 I can’t really remember - think there was more of a passing interest as England weren’t there.

Saka and Gordon would slaughter their full backs. Would be a fascinating watch if we do get to the final and GS decides to go all out.

We have actually been shocking in the euros

4 teams up until the late 70s i believe ,then only 2 groups , then when it went to 4 groups the competition was overall incredible .

Ive always found up until 2016 when the format changed the euros to be an incredibly challenging tournament to win , the stars just aligned for Greece

So where can Holland be exploited ? I still think VVD is a quality defender but may be susceptible to an attacker with pace

We scored more Argentina before we got knocked out. In the groups they were not great and even lost to Saudi Arabia. Fair play to Spain, Yamal’s goal was something special and the difference between the two teams.

Down the left hand side, because they play a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 and Dumfries operates like a RWB. There will be spaces behind him where De Virj plays - unfortunately our left hand side has been weak. Apparently Koeman likes to play 3-4-1-2 against stronger teams like ourselves.

Feeling good about the game later!

The Netherlands aren't very good. I would say Switzerland are a tougher challenge but they'll be an interesting opponent with how the tournament has played out. On paper we have the players, but as we have seen, we've limped through our last two games and if we try to do the same tonight, probably won't get away with it again.

I'm Just hoping the penalty win has brought everyone together and we have a new hunger from that. If it can galvanise us and we turn up, we will have the beating of them. Let's see!

Its going to be odd having an opposition actually try an attack us for once this tournament.

Might be wishful thinking but we have always looked awful against stubborn opposition. Part of me hopes that not just having to break a low block may allow us to play a bit more ourselves and spring counters.

Pretty nervous for this game

I think we will lose tonight, not that holland are particularly great rather they have better attacking players than Switzerland and can hurt you more .

England 1 - 2 Holland

Yeah I think it ends here. Despite expecting that I still think it’s gonna be 90 mins of us getting wound up with Southgateball.
