Eccles moving into the category of so under rated he’s becoming over rated.

Good player and deserves a lot of credit for how he’s grown over the past two year, but I don’t think we miss him when he doesn’t play.

I hope he can improve and step on again.

What's this based on out of interest?

As he played all but maybe 2/ games last year? If he had been out for any sustained period I would guarantee we would have missed him.

When he’s been subbed, when he didn’t play this season and the season before.

Put it this way, there’s 4 or 5 players that I’d be really concerned about not having, and he isn’t one of them.

I really like him, but feel as though talk of PL interest is OTT.

So based on nothing ?

based on what Yorkshire SB has seen in games - it’s his (or her) opinion and some agree, some disagree

when Sheaf got injured there was mass panic on here because he was integral to the team, our best player etc etc…. I for one don’t see the same with Eccles AT THE MINUTE.

my view on him is based on when I’ve watched him play, he isn’t decisive enough, he often gives the ball away, commits rash fouls, shouts and blames other players too much, can’t take a corner for toffee, doesn’t really score, passes sideways and backwards a lot….although I have seen steady improvement in his key forward passes last season and I think he’s definitely on an upwards curve if he just believes in himself

Let me ask this question then, if he’s so good then why is there no reported interest from anywhere at all, unlike Sheaf who is (apparently) wanted by premier league and relegated clubs for £10M plus….? He would definitely improve a couple of teams’ midfields in our league, but I don’t think he’d get into a lot of them, and I certainly can’t think of a premier league team he’d get into.

Eccles is a solid 7 out of 10 player, week in and week out. You need players like that in every team. In midfield, we lack a player that can do what Hamer could and dominate games with a 8 or 9 out of 10 performances. Sheaf has a wow factor in the defensive elements of his games but in attack it's lacking somewhat. The difference between our team in 22/23 and 23/24 is the presence in midfield. If COH kept up his Dec-Feb form, that may have solved that conundrum.

We'll see how Rudoni and Torp get on, but it's no surprise we're prepared to spend a lot of money on a midfielder given that we were a signature away from a UCL experience midfielder in Stamenic.

Looking at the Getafe lineup, we had Palmer as a CM in the first half and it's unlikely he'd play in that spot consistently in the league campaign.

I think both Palmer, Allen and Eccles are not good enough for us right now as we move into another gear. Harsh but true. Torp and Rudoni will feature alonside Sheaf. Some will move on now or in January and we will bring a few more in.

For anyone who watched the Getafe game, did anyone notice Eccles’ tactical role has been changed a little bit?

He was playing in the hole front of the defenders and had a clear instruction to spray the ball diagonally to our wingers. It was also a tactic too for our central defenders.

Without reading too much into one preseason game, we’ll be setting up similarly to how we did v Leeds (H) last season. Eccles behind a midfield of Sheaf and Rudoni as things currently stand.

Torp hasn't done enough yet to warrant a starting 11 spot before Eccles. He's showed some glimpses of quality but has often been too slow and is apparently made of glass.
MR will go with Eccles because he is a decent all rounder who can offer some protection to the back line.

Torp also had some very poor performances. The Birmingham one was as bad as any individual display I have saw from any of our players last season.

He may come good and clearly has some ability including his shooting but like you I worry that he seems slow. Also one assist in 17 appearances wasn't it? Time is on his side though.

You could say exactly the same about Sheaf, Simms, Wright, van Ewijk. Not aware of any bids for any of our players.

you can’t say exactly the same about Sheaf…..

and Simms & Wright have been subject to speculation, but yes nothing more - however they along with MVE have only been with us one season and we paid huge fees for them too

So 'in front' of midfielders (as per 2nd para) or behind them (as per last para)?

Think he meant defenders
Think he meant defenders
Correct, my bad guys and I’ve edited the post.

He looked good in that role because it played to his strength of progressive passing. A tactical idea the team is playing with is to hit those long diagonals to the left and right flanks.

Getafe was a warm up and good one at that. Looking forward to seeing how everything comes together.

You keep harping on about speculation like it has some kind of value, but speculation is all it is with no actual worth. Just internet bollocks from attention seekers on the whole, occasionally fuelled by an agent. It means nothing.

By definition, in playing for his hometown club Eccles is likely to be more settled than other players and less likely to seek a move elsewhere, or have his agent test the water by linking his name to other clubs. If he was made available for transfer I think you would be surprised at just who would be interested in signing him, and in my opinion those clubs interested would include a few you dismissed in an earlier post.

Ok, and that’s fair - it’s your opinion so we’ll have to agree to disagree as I said earlier, because there’s no way of proving either way other than the fact that there has actually been no mention of anybody looking at him, as opposed to others, which you’re quite right may just be speculation.

I don’t buy the homegrown point though, as we’ve had many a home grown talent move on throughout the years without a second thought as to leaving their home town club - personally I don’t think it makes any difference.

Either way, it will be interesting watching his progress this season - I think this is his time to either shine or fall by the wayside
