But aren't Labour trying to do something about this?
They're reemploying border control staff and trying to clear the asylum back log and sending the tax man after the barbers, nail salons etc.
Will their plan work? Who knows?
I'm not someone with a lot of faith in them
but they are trying something. I don't think it's realistic to expect them to sort it after a month.

The backlog is the worst issue. I mentioned before (and got sneered at) about an asylum seeker who'd been stuck in one room for 18 months with their family waiting to hear. That does nobody anywhere any good.

Also denies us, if their claim is accepted, an economic contributor to the country as they can't work for the first 12 months at least while they wait on a decision! Surely no claim needs to take that long, even taking into account appeals?

I really think we need to go all out on Northern productivity and connecting Manchester/Liverpool/Leeds to make a London competitor. The economy is so ridiculously centralised the south east and everywhere else are like two different countries which just adds to the feeling of being fucked over by a bunch of toasters in London.

Ive always been vehemently against ID cards but I do think the case for them is now getting stronger.

This is classic talking past each other. The article says Nick is correct. They get housing and money. Because that’s not UC or PIP or whatever you can say “no benefits” when to any normal person a house and money is a benefit.

I've come round to ID cards tbh. And if we must have ID in the form of a driving license or passport to vote, then lets at least allow the state to provide the means of identification fairly.

Do you have figures to say that there are no illegal immigrants in this country being housed in accommodation intended for those waiting on asylum / being funded by the tax payer? There are even circumstances where people classed as illegal are housed anyway.

But if everybody was living comfortably and we had enough social housing to house British citizens and those granted asylum already then nobody would bat an eyelid.

I understand the perceived unfairness but we have to house those we’ve granted asylum and don’t have the facilities because the state has been gutted.

This is the fundamental issue. We’ve had fifteen years of simultaneously being told we’re dirt poor and can’t afford the basics as a country, and also saying we have to house anyone who comes here regardless of economic impact or housing availability.

Basically like your drivers licence but for everyone. Would make it easier to check people’s status quickly in the street if you’re a copper or whatever I guess. I just knowing being one of the few places that doesn’t have them means we are easier to work in the black economy than other places which is an obvious draw for certain immigrants.

It's risk limitation, why would they do that when they have less riskier options?

Lack of education and aspiration has lead to violence crime in all areas in poverty since the 50s and beyond in virtually every country regardless of race and religion. Not to do with immigration as largely 3rd/4th generation in asian communities. Government neglect, lack of investment, breakdown of families and racism leads to isolation and thereby growth of crime. It's not rocket science. The solutions are complex though!

Yeah, don't come to Coventry much at all these days.

The migrants here are housed in an old army barracks. At least, they were anyway.

You mentioned Allesley. It’s actually the Coventry Hill Hotel that houses asylum seekers.

The village has always been a sleepy village with school fetes, cardivals, a village hall with WI gatherings etc.

Now it’s a ghetto. The local shop is raided on a daily basis. They actually now remove items such as washing tablets from the store as they are pinched daily.

At one point the local pub was invaded by hotel residents and it turned into a drug den and had to be closed for a while.

Many of the hotel residents are frequently drunk and abusive. They target young females and make sexualised comments.

That for some people is the reality. How tolerant would you feel living there?

Almost bought a house round there in 2018 but decided on Eastern Green instead.

Definitely made the correct decision.

They burnt out the local Citizens advice office so come Monday theres going to be desperate people with nowhere to turn to, really self defeating if you claim to care about the neglected and disenfranchised working class.
